The office staff are wonderful and kind :). I started coming here a few weeks ago for neck/back pain. I also have TMJ, muscle tension dysphonia, and dysphagia. I am very happy with Dr. Kelly for ART and chiropractic care and can see a difference. After about 3 sessions, my migraines are better and I plan on continuing to see him. I saw Dr. Dawn for acupuncture and ART for the first time today. I noticed 2 other reviews talking about how painful it can be. I was surprised there were not more. I was not expecting to be in so much pain with the acupuncture. I wish I did not do the ART after that because I think I had already reached my pain tolerance haha. The ART was too much for me. I respect Dr. Dawn as a practitioner and I'm sure she is very knowledgeable, but I had a hard time adjusting to the intense and fast-paced ART. Dr. Dawn and her team saved the day for me. I developed severe overuse damage to my right leg while training for a marathon. It progressed to the point where I couldn't run more than a mile and withonly two months to the race. Dr. Liu is the best for chronic pain! She literally gave me my life back. I had chronic back and neck pain for 9 months, I saw 4 different chiropractors, 3 PTs, and my doctor, and Dr. Liu is the only one who could do anything about it. Now after 3 months of seeing her, I can finally exercise again and I'm hardly ever in pain anymore. Her goal is also to get you healed as quickly as possible, and I think if she was the first person I saw she would have been able to fix me in a few sessions. ART is also extremely painful but so worth it. I don't have a very high pain tolerance, and there have been times where I'm screaming from the pain, but you really get used to it after a few sessions and it's better as your body heals. Plus I don't mind the pain because I always walk out feeling better than when I walked in. Just try a session and you'll be a believer! I recommend her to everyone! The only other thing to know is there have been a couple of times when my appointment times have gotten mixed up, but they always confirm your appointment so you'll know in advance if that happens. They're also super apologetic if that does happen and do everything they can to fix the situation. I have good news and bad news! (should be a 2-star) :( Good News: Both Dawn and Anthony are excellent therapists. They are highly competent and their treatments are effective with quick results. Bad News: The office (and management) is horribly inefficient. I show on time for every appointment yet still wait 15 - 30 minutes before I am seen. I drive a fair distance to the office, in traffic, and take time away from my business to do so. Yet, I am still charged for a full 1 hour treatment even thought I am only seen for 30-40 minutes. Not a great value. They seem to be good about getting the patients out of the office on time, so why the long wait times to be seen? To make things worse, the receptionist (Linda, Laura?) has virtually nothing so say upon arrival other than, "Your appointment is at 9:00? Ok, that will be $79 dollars." There are no kind welcomes, no hospitality, no info is offered, no questions, no guidance. And she is oblivious to the long wait times or simply just ignores the problem. Unfortunately, I will be forced to find a therapy center closer to my home as I can not afford the additional costs of travel time and loss of work. The value simply does not pencil out. Sometimes you have to fall in order to learn how to get back up right ?! Dr. Dawn sure knows how to work her magic !!! I've undergone ART (Active Release Technique) before, but from a different practitioner. I was already a believer of the practice since it worked for me in the past. 'ART' gave me hope and confidence to start running again. My left knee has been bothering me 'on and off' for the last year and a half or so. With all the therapy work that I've gone through, I believe both 'ART' and biomechanical rehabilitation have helped the BEST. I met Dr. Dawn through my running group. She offered a 'free' consultation and I was not pressured to sign-up with her before, during, or after. She left it all up to me to decide and commit on my own time and convenience. Since my only concern was the cost and my insurance can only cover so much, I had to seriously decide on which practitioner would be the best fit for me (both short and long term). After my initial consultation, I must say my knee hasn't felt this pain-free (knock on wood) in awhiiiiile ! Uphills/downhills used to be a problem, but lately it hasn't been bothering me. Yay ! The uncomfortable sharp pain seemed to magically disappear. How could that be after just one session ? She worked on my leg muscles emphasizing on my hamstrings and areas of tightness. It sure was painful and at times I thought I'd end up with bruises from all the applied pressure. A few rotations here and there and she wanted to see me run before and after to feel the difference. She suggested a few tweaks in my form and landing as well. Wow ! What a difference ! Running felt almost effortless. That's a PLUS, especially for long distance runners such as myself. Dr. Dawn also has a SD Meetup group that consists of group runs and meetings regarding sports injury prevention and proper running techniques. Dr. Liu is an amazing chiropractor/practitioner of A.R.T. I had never been to a chiro before, or heard of A.R.T., and I was nervous, but my primary care doctor recommended Dr. Liu. She made an amazing difference with the sciatica that I was experiencing. Within 4 sessions my sciatica was gone (and has not returned in ~6 months), which was absolutely amazing to me. She listened to my history, and then made me do various stretches and easily knew which muscles to address. I think the A.R.T. helped much more than any "cracking". Our visits were extremely effective. As mentioned in other reviews, the office management is not the best. One receptionist is cool and aloof, and did not follow up after promising to look up my insurance information. However, the new receptionist is much better, friendly and helpful. read more

I have been to Dr. Dawn for several sessions over the years without incident. I previously thought of her as competent and compassionate. However, my last appointment with her several months ago resulted in severe pain to my hip. I contacted her office twice to talk it over with her and to see what she would recommend I do. I left detailed messages about the issue with her office staff and did not receive any call back from her. Dr. Dan Liu is an amazing chiropractor and highly knowledgeable in her field. I'm an allopathic doctor (MD) in San Diego and look at chiropractic medicine as complementary to my field of practice. Dr. Liu is an expert in sports-related injuries and has helped me over several years in rehabilitating Achilles tendinitis, IT band syndrome, sciatic nerve pain, and some occupational-related strains (back pain, shoulder pains, etc). I live a very active lifestyle, and practice a lot of self-care to prevent injuries (foam rolling/stretching). I was extremely surprised and perplexed to find myself having acute back pain, which I thought was a dislocated rib. I had very limited range of motion in my torso, and I was walking around like a robot. I was in mercy to my pain, and I made a same day appointment with Dr. Liu and told her about my symptoms. After a very thorough assessment, she was quickly able to pin point what was going on. My rib was completely in tact, but my psoas muscle was completely inflamed. She did some body work on my abdominal muscles (A.R.T.), and I immediately felt 40-50% less pain. I made an appointment 2 days later, and by that time my pain decreased to 70%. After my 2nd appointment of A.R.T. with Dr. Liu, my pain was down to 90%! She is so beyond educated and experienced, I was very impressed. I will see her for a few more appointments, then add in her recommendations to my self-care routine. My insurance doesn't cover treatments out of my network, so I paid out of pocket. It can get expensive that way, but I really feel like what you get from every visit is beyond worth the out of pocket cost. Made an appointment on April 20th because they were chiropractic providers though my insurance company the person booking the appointment tried to sell me additional services which I wasn't interested in first of all because "active release technique " or ART has not been scientifically shown to have any medical benefits. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_Release_Technique but not only that, I just wanted Chiropractic services that they should be providing. On April 23rd , 3 hours before my appointment someone from the office calls me and tells me I can't go there just for Chiropractic and told me I have to pay out of pocket above my insurance copay because it's a package deal. I told her I didn't want it again and she said there was no choice so after rearranging my day to see this doctor I had to cancel my appointment. I really couldn't believe what just happened, so I called back and asked if the doctor Anna would call me back. She finally did later that day and apologized for canceling my appointment in such short notice but then proceeded to say "if you're not interested in ART then maybe you should look for another provider" I would be real weary about seeing Dr. Liu and Dr. Anna , they don't seem to care about the well being of people at all .. they just care about how much money they can milk out of their clients. I work and live in Solana Beach and will definitely start spreading the word about their unethical business practices as well as make a complaint to the insurance company that lists them as a provider and the The Board of Chiropractic Examiners. read more

Anna Phillips is good and knowledgeable. She deserves 5-stars. The billing or accounting staff deserves No-stars! We were OVER CHARGED FOR SERVICES and never got a reimbursement. Finally got an itemized statement of charges and they were off by over $200. Contacted the office multiple times and they did not return calls or make any attempt to reconcile the billing statement. We are working with Aetna filing a formal complaint to recover the money! CONCLUSION: Make sure you are aware of all charges your insurance will pay as well as any out of pocket expenses and confirm your bills to insure you are not billed for services you did not receive! read more

If you have back pain, look no further Last year I was in so much pain it was maddening. I could go to work and get through my day but all I wanted to do was get home and lie down. I injured myself at the gym, I literally contemplated getting a steroid injection to give me relief. My husband had gone to Dr. Anna earlier in the year and swore by her. I've been in treatment for frozen shoulder with Dr. Dawn for 3 weeks and am feeling so much better, I just have to Yelp about it. I started having pain in my left upper arm in July 2010 and thought it was from working out, so I took a break to heal up. The pain got worse despite the rest and I went to my primary care doc, who diagnosed me with a shoulder impingement & said nothing could really be done about it except to take anti-imflammatories for the pain. I tried massage, other chiropractors and physical therapy with my HMO, but was still in near constant pain and thinking that I would never get better. I found Action Chiropractic after doing an Internet search for shoulder impingement treatment and made an appointment. The office staff was very pleasant to deal with and got me in quickly. Dr. Dawn took an extensive history and studied the range of motion I had in my left arm from many different angles and positions. She diagnosed me with adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) and told me about A.R.T. (active release technique) therapy. She was honest and said the treatment would be very painful, but that my range of motion would be restored and I would be pain free within about 10 sessions. She was NOT kidding about the painful treatment! At some points, it hurts so badly, I'm not sure if I can stand anymore. She really knows what she's doing though, and does all she can to make it easier and talk me through the pain. I noticed a difference after the very first session, and now after 4 sessions, there has been a HUGE improvement in both my range of motion and pain level. I am no longer in constant pain, and am able to exercise again and sleep through the night. I don't have total range of motion back yet, but I'm getting there quickly under Dr. Dawn's care. I went to Action Performance Care because my upper glute area was locked up and I'd heard that A.R.T treatment would be helpful. I saw Dr. Cipperoni, who was nice, professional and confident. The treatment consisted of him applying pressure to the most painful part of my upper hip area and helping me move my leg in different repetitive motions. It was extremely painful, which worried me, but I hoped that the treatment would shift something and relieve my pain later. I have now spent two days in serious pain and can barely move or sleep without sharp pain in my hip area. This is much worse pain that what I went in with... Not sure when this pain will subside, but not likely for a few days. If the first rule of medicine is 'first do no harm', that rule was broken badly. Be careful with this treatment. If it hurts much at all, ask them to stop. read more

I first saw Dr. Liu six years ago when I was suffering chronic migraines due to jaw tension caused taking a water polo ball to the face at full speed. I was suffering from migraines or headaches multiple times a week and had tried basic chiro care to no avail. Doctors said my one solution would be jaw surgery, but I gave ART a try first. After my first session my migraines stopped. I went about 4 times when I was home for the holidays and I haven't suffered headaches since -- for SIX YEARS after having them almost every day. Technique was pretty good but the bedside manner needs some definite improvement. I waited for over 45 minutes to be seen on my first appointment and 35 on the second. Dr. Liu was rushed and impatient with me. She actually went as far as saying my body seemed broken--I had so many problems that needed to be fixed. While it may have been the truth at the time, as an injured runner, it really was depressing and I believe set me back in my treatment. After 5 visits and little improvement, I gave up and went elsewhere. I am now seeing an amazing PT who pinpointed my problem on the first visit and I'm finally on the road to recovery! read more

Unfortunately the accounting office and/or staff have no desire to help me use my insurance to supplement the high cost of treatments there. I developed sciatica during my training program for the Boston Marathon 2016. Two-months out from the race, I quit training and took a 4 week break. Dr. Dawn Liu was recommended by a few of the runners in my running circle. I called Action Performance immediately. Dr. Dawn spent nearly an hour on my first visit. I was sweaty! Bending, stretching, squatting, and even running. She broke down my issues. It wasn't just sciatica. I was dealing with hip issues, tight hamstrings, weak glutes, and my form was suffering. I injured my shoulder at the beginning of the year, and had an impingement in the upper part of my right arm. I experienced pain with any pushing motion or lifting weight overhead. Over the months that followed, I sought virtually every treatment under the sun in the hopes of avoiding surgery, including massage therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. They all did nothing for me. Six months and over a thousand dollars later, just when I thought I was going to need surgery, my friend referred me to Action Chiropractic. After having sought so many other treatments, including with my regular chiropractor, I was quite skeptical. After a few treatments of Active Release Therapy, Dr. Anna got my shoulder back to 100%. Unfortunately, I got so excited, I resumed using my shoulder too quickly instead of taking it easy and allowing time to heal and re-injured it. I had to go back for a couple more treatments, and am now back in Crossfit with no modifications. I went to Dr Liu on recommendation from a friend. I play tennis and was having hip pain. Dr Liu spend about 45 minutes with me on the first visit just doing a diagnostic of my entire body - balance, flexibility, she analyzed my walk, etc. She treats the whole body and not just the isolated symptom that you go to her for. She has taught me better posture, walking, standing, breathing, and eventually running. Best of all, I cut out sweets from my diet at the same time. I have lost 13 pounds in 3 months. Really not a major change in eating but in addition to Dr Lui's work it all came together for a great result. Friends and family have noticed a big difference and it's not just the weight loss. I look and feel happier and I stand taller and stronger. It can be painful, but don't give up! Do all of the "homework" she gives you (stretching exercises etc). You will see results. I've been meaning to write a review for Dr. Anna Phillips for months now! While I've never been to their facility, Action was at the AFC Half Marathon Expo in 2012. I had just gotten a massive shin injury (looooooooong story) and had a bruise as big as your hand on my right shin. Action was offering free pre-race check-ups and I thought it might be worth it to check them out. Dr. Phillips took a look at my injury, did some drainage and recovery massage, then recommended that I pick up some k-tape. She even did the taping for me for free! I developed a serious pain in my toe/foot over a few months and was in constant pain. I couldn't apply pressure on my toe and walking on that foot became uncomfortable to the point of wincing. I went to my normal doctor to get a x-ray and have them check it out. The x-ray showed no damage to my foot despite the swelling and my described pain. They suggested it was possibly arthritis and something that I would just have to deal with and medicate the rest of my life. I'm 27. I've had a similar experience: I love Dr. Anna, she is very good. She helped me get back to all the things I love to do. Unfortunately the "business" is not honest. They overcharge, force you to pay out of pocket even though they are part of the insurance network (have a contract with the network), and after a decision from the insurance company and the network (ASH) granting my claim, they are still refusing to reimburse me. I decided that it was not worth the trouble and found closer to home an excellent chiropractor who is happy to take my insurance. I have multiple sports related injuries and complaints spanning 20+ years of running and martial arts.
