I've been a member of Beacon Hill Athletic Club (Wellesley) for three years, and the only reason I…read morecontinue to go is because it's convenient and there aren't many easy alternatives nearby. The biggest issue is that the equipment is badly outdated. Walking into the gym feels like stepping into the 1980s. The machines are old, the overall facility feels tired, and it is long overdue for a serious investment and refresh. The locker rooms are in a similar state, very dated and in clear need of renovation. To be fair, the club is clean. Extremely clean. In fact, the staff often seem more concerned with cleaning equipment than allowing members to use it. The constant wiping down and fussing over machines can feel excessive and, at times, genuinely strange. The atmosphere is also disappointing. Peter appears to have a group of favorite members and regularly has loud, bro-style conversations with them across the gym. These conversations often include inappropriate language that feels unprofessional in a fitness club setting. Another staff member, a younger guy, is consistently rude and seems to think the gym's sound system exists solely for his benefit. When he's working, members are subjected to some truly awful reggae playlists. Peter's music choices aren't much better, with a steady diet of jazz and 70s music that feels completely disconnected from what most people would expect in a modern gym. The overall impression is that the gym is run around the preferences of the staff rather than the members. Whether it's the music, the conversations, or the way the floor is managed, there seems to be very little thought given to creating an environment that is motivating and enjoyable for the people actually paying to work out there. The one saving grace is the woman who works at the front desk. She is consistently friendly, welcoming, professional, and genuinely customer-focused. She treats members with respect and clearly understands what good customer service looks like. Ironically, she also seems to have the best taste in music. Unfortunately, it's uncomfortable to watch how some of the other staff, particularly Peter, treat her. She deserves far better than the dismissive attitude she often appears to receive. For a club that charges premium membership fees, the facilities, atmosphere, and management approach simply don't measure up.

This gym is great and always very clean! It is well equipped and organized. Members here are…read moreno-nonsense. They come to get a good workout. They don't try to find dates, show off the latest fitness gear, or take selfies. If you love 70's music, which I do, the vibe is perfect. If not, bring your own music because that is all they play.

(and have also…read moretried their Southie and Eastie locations) I actually first found them through their monthly free community class, which I'm not sure if they still do but should bring back if they don't! They have a great variety of classes and times. my favorites are Strength: Full Body and Yoga Sculpt. At Wellesley I've only gone to Kate, Carolina, & Cams classes but they've all been incredible instructors. Love the dark, color-changing studio, comfy mats, and well-stocked bathrooms. Front desk staff is always SO nice too! Highly recommend!!

4.5 - so close to 5 if not for the painfully blasting music. Another day, another way too detailed…read moregroup fitness class review! PRE-CLASS: I booked via ClassPass and they automatically slot you into one of the four front-most bikes closest to the instructor. Thinking that the spots would be way too close to the speakers, I opted for something a little further away in the first row. Shout-out to the wonderful girl working the front desk on Saturday morning, who helped me set up my bike to the right seat and handlebar height and also got me a pair of shoes when the pair I brought (SPD-SL) turned out to not be compatible with the pedals. CLASS: Pretty standard cycling class, heavy on the choreography. It took me a good chunk of the class to be able to follow along and try to match the moves with the beat, but it's also totally fine to just pedal without the moves. (That said, if you're more accustomed to outdoor cycling with greater resistance, the super high cadences where you're essentially bouncing up and down in your seat is going to feel extremely silly.) A much bigger issue: the music is SO loud. Like painfully, blasting loud. Next time, I'm going to bring ear plugs. INSTRUCTOR: I liked the playlist and I thought Allie did a good job of mixing up the various cadences. Also seriously impressed by how much time she spent on the bike with us while shouting encouragement and cues - I was out of breath just following along. Lots of regulars. I was a newbie and not expecting her to go out of her way to say hi, especially when the class was crowded, but at one point she asked, a few minutes into class, if anyone was new and one person raised their hand and ... that was it. COMPETITIVE: Nope. The bikes don't even have the monitors showing RPM, time, or distance, so you can truly zone out. On the other hand, if you're into stats or tracking progress other than by feel, this was an obvious absence. FACILITIES: Lockers, with cubbies to put your shoes. I counted four showers with toiletries. However, the place on a weekend morning was an absolute zoo with multiple classes starting/ending at the same time. I imagine there would've been a line for a shower and opted for a stinky, sweaty car ride back home. PARKING: Lots of street options and, right behind the studio, the Waban Street parking lot, with dirt-cheap parking. Download the Passport app so you can pay w/o quarters. OVERALL: 9/10. Good for beginners and regulars alike. If you're at all self-conscious of the dance moves, the bikes in the back row are a good idea (but more importantly, no one is paying attention to anything except themselves so you might as well have fun).

I asked very nicely if they could take it in the hall or common area, it's posted as a rule not to talk on the floor. He looked at me like he wanted to kill me and kept talking. Spencer, a trainer, was about 10 feet away. I asked him if he could please tell him to not take a call here. He said he couldn't. He could do it later. I said I don't understand, it would take 3 seconds to ask, you just talked to me longer than that, just ask him please. He said he couldn't, in a way that seemed like teasing, like he was tying to make me feel petty for asking. I went downstairs and complained to the person at the desk. When I went back upstairs Spencer came right up to me and said he asked him and he hung up the phone. It was obvious now he had been teasing me, because he came right up to me to try to patch it over. No one likes to be ridiculed. This is the first time something like this happened. There is a man there who stares at people. A few weeks ago he walked up to me and yelled in my face when I asked him not to stare at me. I told him to please move away from me, he didn't. I mentioned it to the spikey haired guy at the desk who said "Oh ya, he's does that a lot, I know exactly who you're talking about." Nothing has been done, and this guy continues to roam around there looking to pick a fight. They need to take care of members. Something is wrong here. I'm leaving. It's their job to enforce rules, members shouldn't have to beg them.

Overall I felt as though this experience was underwhelming and I was left dissatisfied.

A couple of the negative reviewers also seem to fall into the "anything less than five stars is one star" approach to Yelp reviewing, but the negative ones don't begin to describe the studio where I've been going for the past year. (And if you're going to attack an employee about their hairstyle, maybe you should grow up a bit before you write another review.) In my experience, the staff has been universally friendly, helpful, and attentive. The coaches have different styles ranging from fairly laid-back to hyperkinetic, so if you have a strong preference for an approach in how you're coached you'll have to find your favorites. All the coaches I've worked with, however, are clearly trying to become better at their jobs and frequently ask for feedback on how they're doing. (If I have an overall suggestion, it would be that all the coaches offer more frequent advice on proper form for the weight exercises. Some do this regularly; others almost not at all.) I enjoy the variety in the classes--every day is something a little different--plus they always provide exercise alternatives for anyone dealing with injuries. My goal is overall fitness--not bulking up or massive cardio gains--and OT definitely delivers. The studio is clean if small (the changing area can get crowded between classes). The equipment always seems to be well-maintained, especially when you consider how much it gets used on a daily basis. I'd probably give OT four stars overall because of some issues in variability in how the franchises get run. (Checking the Reddit forums, it's pretty clear that the franchisees have a fair amount of leeway in day-to-day operations.) It's not a problem overall for me--and certainly not the fault of the staff--but it may explain why some people give Wellesley lower ratings since how things are run here may differ from other studios.
