Almost a year now learning from Terry and it's been a enjoyable life-changing experience. That's definitely a bold statement but there's really no other way for me to put it. In grade school I did some acting and was in music programs through to HS graduation but took a hard science route in college because it was "practical" or "stable" and "secure". After working for a couple of years I found myself feeling empty and looking for something meaningful/fulfilling somewhere else. The creative self was hungry. I missed performing! I looked back at acting and took a chance with Terry. There are a number of classes in SD but she got me with the interview with local agents, chance to perform in a showcase, and the testimonials. The interview was very in depth and answers many FAQs that actors would have. The showcase was something I was very interested in doing and after doing one this past March I'm committed to doing it again. You get to perform for your family and friends AND industry professionals who could help further your career! And for the testimonials... just look through them, you might find some people you've seen on TV. ;) If you made it this far I'll have to give you what you're probably looking for: the in-class experience. She's incredibly patient with students and keeps the class light even if the scenes are heavy. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it feels like those school days where you have class outside on a sunny day under a tree. She has a keen eye for figuring out your type very easily and will help you discover the roles you can play. Figuring out your type is IMPERATIVE in this business! I pay very close attention to the WAY people say things and her delivery in the classroom, even of criticism, is careful, considerate, and very constructive. What I'm saying is you can totally mess up in class (and you will) but it will feel more like a learning experience than an embarrassment -- as it should! Of course, no review is complete without some cons. If you're the type who needs structure in the form of, say, a syllabus, you might be a little uncomfortable in this class. It can seem like there's no set plan in the class, but there is one! Also, class often runs over the scheduled time but she's flexible if you happen to have a tight schedule. Since the class I've worked on a number of student and independent films in the SD area and, while that helps build up a resume, the real value in that is getting to meet and work with other creative people who, when it all comes down to it, just want to play and make something great! I just started getting some paid gigs and have friends from class who have made a pretty penny for acting. And they don't even have an agent yet! San Diego has a growing film industry and is a great place to get your feet wet if you're thinking of taking the plunge and going to LA. But we do have big things in store that might make you want to stay in SD after all. ;) I've been through a lot of school and this is the only class I've never wanted to miss! If you want to try your hand at acting Terry is the way to go. If you're a performer (or want to be one), have a wild imagination for playing various characters, want to learn things about yourself you never knew existed, you must act! Terry is the best of the best! A true renaissance woman who has a wealth of knowledge both in front of the camera, and behind it! I caught the acting bug a few months ago, but I had no idea where to start. I must have lucked out, because Terry's class was the first I decided to try, and I've had a great experience. Every class has been fun, engaging, and has helped push me out of my comfort zone and develop my skill as a new actor. Heck, within just a few weeks I was already doing a scene in front of a camera, with lights and sound equipment. Its like being on a real movie set! Terry also gives great advice on how to get started in the industry. That includes resume critiquing, getting headshots done, how to start acting on small projects, etc. Not only that, but she also hosts a showcase event for all of her acting students to show off what they learned to the acting/film community as well (and you might even get contacted by an agent!). I started with her a little over a year ago, and since then I have seen myself grow into the man I want to be. My son has been taking Terry's teen class for over a year now. Initially it was to learn something new, but now it is a great interest of his. I have seen a difference in his level of self-confidence along with acting.
