I practice Northern Shaolin with this organization, so it's only that one class that I'm…read morespecifically referring to in this review. I've practiced other martial arts in the past, and I've found my home here. The class structure is usually some warm-ups, followed by some conditioning and some drill work, concluded with a bit of forms work. There is a great breadth to the types of movements that a student learns, but they are all martially applicable. A good deal of time is spent on learning the applications to the techniques and practicing with classmates in order to become effective in their use. The one note of warning is that there is quite a bit of physical conditioning that is taught in this class, as this style can be physically demanding. Accommodations are made to suit the various fitness levels of the individual student, but you will definitely be encouraged to work hard and try your best. Chances are that you will "feel it" the next day. If are open to engaging in that level of exercise, then you'll probably have a lot of fun. If you take issue with the thought that your muscles have actually been made to do some work, then you probably won't attend more than one class.

I've been practicing Northern Shaolin with PATHS Atlanta for about a year now. I highly recommend…read moreit for anyone interested in learning Kung Fu. Class typically begin with a variety of stretching exercises and a circuit drill for conditioning. Following that we get into the substance of Nothern Shaolin. There is a heavy emphasis on forms and applications. I really like how we learn how each movement in a form could be used practically. We will also learn meditative techniques, history of Northern Shaolin and other styles, and the theories behind our martial practice. There is a lot of individual instruction in class. It is not uncommon for one student to be working on one thing while other students are practicing something else, but it never feels like you have been forgotten or excluded. Also common is that other students will momentarily pause what they are doing to offer you guidance or answer your question. The instructor is very knowledgeable, not just on Northern Shaolin but many other styles. Many times in class he will teach us some aspect of other styles for our martial education. We also are expected to learn the history of our lineage of Northern Shaolin which I think is really neat. There are two unique things about our class that I absolutely love. First, the classes are outdoors. While sometimes in extreme weather (August heat and January cold) I wish we had an indoor space, I almost always enjoy practicing Kung Fu outdoors. The second thing is the social aspect. Typically after class we go out for drinks and food. That aspect was a pleasant surprise as there I have really bonded with my fellow students and they all have interesting and diverse lives to learn about. One thing to note - I think the class structure has changed some since Phillip wrote his review. While physical conditioning is a part of class, I don't think it is as intense as when Phillip wrote his review. Still, you will get a good work-out and it will get you into shape (I have had many friends note that I look to be in the best shape in a long time.)

The community is great with the other students as well. They're super supportive, and encouraging. Class wise: - if you get an opportunity to take SLAP with Ava, absolutely do it! Don't walk, run!! She is soo sweet and each class is like an adventure where we get to try new things and build off of previous things we've learned in class as well! It's never boring, and her music is on point! Also, the chair work, floor work, and gloves are chef's kiss! It was a challenge for me to really lean into my feminine energy, and she made it possible for me to do that! I adore her soo much, and I appreciate how comfortable she's made me feel. - if you see any spin classes with Jennifer that are open, run to register as well! She is extremely supportive, and I've been raving about her class and teaching style since I got in with her. She also focuses on some great stretches and body warm ups at the beginning of class to ensure that you're good and ready. - if you don't know of Red yet, you will! Run to her classes as well! I've been in her Bae'B Stripper series, and whew this class almost gave me a run for my money, but I look forward to every Monday with her and the girls! There was a young lady with multi colored hair at the entrance but she was too busy on her phone to acknowledge my husband and I so we left. I have since been on the fence not only because of our encounter but because of some concerning things I have heard from multiple people regarding what has been described as "childish drama" with the employees as well as told that if our family were to register "There would be certain things we would have to overlook" because the pros of the training out weigh the negative aspects of some of the people that work there. I don't base my opinions or decisions on hearsay and like to see things for myself and was willing to give this martial arts school another try (despite my off putting first impression.) I believe everyone deserves a second chance and what is a problem for one person doesn't mean it will be for another. That being said, I was leaving Pizza Hut last night (6/26) and witnessed the woman that I remembered seeing the day my husband and I came in accosting a black woman outside of the school. The employee was screaming at her, the woman was screaming back and all I heard were words like "pedophile" and other insults. It seemed like it was something personal and there were no children present but the behavior of the employee was abhorrent and as a result I absolutely will never consider this establishment an option for my family. It is my hope that whatever took place is resolved and because this is the second time I have witnessed this young lady acting in such a disrespectful and unprofessional way, management takes a good hard look at how their establishment is being represented to those of us in the community.

Before I tried Vicky's class, I experienced other Zumba instructors. Some couldn't dance and some couldn't instruct. Others did not help me to even break a sweat. You will not regret it. I've lost weight too thanks to her help - if you come see her regularly and eat right, people will be asking where the rest of you went. Also, bring your kids!
