I started at ACR Homes in college as a Direct Care Professional. I wanted to find a job that allowed me to feel like I was making an impact. I was thankful to get the job and start working. Training is hard because you are learning so much at once, but after a few months you settle in. The position taught me how to value others, manage a schedule, and advocate for those without a voice. It stretched me in ways I didn't know I needed to be stretched both positive and negative (because no job is perfect). I learned that I enjoyed the medical field, made friends with great co-workers, and built great relationships with the residents I cared for. Now, 9 years down the road, I'm still employed with ACR but work in a full-time administrative position. After graduation I had the opportunity to work elsewhere, and I'm so thankful I made the choice to stay and build my career here. I personally choose to stay at ACR because I feel seen and valued as an employee (both financially and emotionally), I have good work/life balance, affordable benefits, because I watch the leaders of our company value other employees, and mostly because they provide consistent quality care to the residents (and that's something I can feel good about and stand behind). I don't have many negatives, but if you want them for the sake of weighing your options, I think their PTO for holidays and general accumulation of it could be a bit better. Communication between departments could be stronger as well. But you will find pros and cons in any organization. The pros FAR outweigh the cons which is why I have stayed for so long and plan to continue my employment. read more

As a nursing student, I applied to ACR with the hope of getting a foot in the door while earning some money for school. Working as DCP for ACR Homes has ultimately been one of the most rewarding positions I have ever held. Despite ACR residents and staff living and working in over 50 different homes in the metro area, the company has worked tirelessly to engage all employees and the individuals we provide care for, in a tremendous effort to create a community full of love, hope and fun! I am based in a home with four residents but have had the opportunity to work closely and form relationships with DOZENS of other adults with disabilities through pajama parties, salon days and countless other company events that work to improve our residents' quality of life and the staffs' love for their job! The opportunity we as care givers have at ACR to work so closely with the residents and form relationships beyond being a typical staff is one of the main reasons I love waking up for my job everyday and is quite honestly, second to none. Having previous experience in nursing homes, I have seen staff burn out and begin to view our residents as "tasks". ACR provides the training and a foundation of CORE VALUES that allow staff to provide care and appreciate these individuals as people who have individual likes and dislikes, unique tastes and perspectives. I am a current employee and I truly love this job. I have been working here for over 2 years and I still enjoy going to work every day. There is a lot of training that goes into the job but that is because you do not need prior experience and you get paid during training. The residents are wonderful and my coworkers and supervisor are fantastic people that truly care for our residents. It can be physically and mentally exhausting at times but when you see the impact that it makes on the residents life, it is completely worth it. You get to do a lot of fun activities with the residents as simple as watching a movie at home or baking cookies to going to concerts or the State Fair (your ticket paid for). It is great experience especially for those interested in healthcare and it is easy to manage as a college student. You are required to work 10 shifts a month minimum and as a full time student, I have not trouble doing that. Unfortunately, the pay is not very high but you get raises and some shifts pay more than others. The residents leave a lasting impression on you that makes going to work enjoyable. It become less about the money and more about the people who you get to work with. read more

I have worked with ACR for a while now and I have enjoyed it immensely. First of all, it is a really great community to be a part of. The lifelong connections made are some of the best parts of working here. The people I work with are amazing and the residents are so much fun to be around. I can honestly say that being at work is the highlight of my week. In addition to that, there are so many great opportunities for people of different interests. It is the type of job that you are able to get what you want out of working there. For example, people who are interested in Psychology can get firsthand experience working with different mental health issues or people interested in Kinesiology can get firsthand experience with the implementation of various range of motion and/or stretching routines for residents. These are only two of the abundant examples of what someone could get from their experience working with ACR. Perhaps my favorite part about the company is seeing the way in which employees make sure to value and prioritize the residents' wants and needs over everything else; seeing this level of respect in my workplace is truly beautiful. read more

ACR Homes is a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to make a difference. The relationships that are built at each house never ceases to amaze me. I have become so close with my residents that while I am away on vacation, I need to call them because I miss them. The work is hard, but the smiles on the faces of my residents makes everything worth it! Upper management emotionally, socially, and financially supports their residents as well as staff. There are HUGE bonus opportunities as well as many opportunities for overtime pay. My supervisor is fantastic and always is there to help staff when needed. She is overly organized making my job easier. Because ACR places you in a house based on your personality, the other staff in my house have become my close friends because we have a lot in common. Working for ACR has been a life changing experience for me. I've learned so much since beginning employment here that I can carry into my future career (I'm in nursing school right now). There are things that can be frustrating, such as open shifts that I feel compelled to cover because I love my residents so much, but overwhelmingly, I've found it to be a positive work environment. The hours are flexible and there are several opportunities to earn extra cash (which is never a bad thing!). I'm certified as a CNA and this counts towards those hours so I can keep my certification current. They also offer internships for several areas of study which is awesome, the only requirement is that you have to be an employee. I've loved working here and even though there are some things that I wish were different (as with any job), I tell all my friends to apply if they ever mention that they're looking for a job. read more

About 4 years ago, I was given the most amazing gift and that was ACR Homes. I have had the amazing opportunity to make a difference in the life of the residents we serve, but what has been even more amazing, is the impact they have had on mine. They have shown me life and struggles through a whole different perspective, and more importantly, they have taught me how to overcome it. I get to go to work everyday loving what I do and could not be more grateful for this experience! It has also given me an amazing perspective in my pursuit of medicine and has added an invaluable experience to my resume and repertoire- I am forever grateful! I worked for ACR Homes for 2 years and it was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. It challenged me to not only be a better professional, but a better person! Because of the experience I gained at ACR Homes, I was accepted to one of the top physical therapy schools in the country and I use the skills I learned at ACR in most, if not all of my classes. I currently work for ACR homes in my undergraduate education. My favorite thing about this company is how genuine and compassionate everyone truly is. Management truly cares about their employees and residents and it shows in many forms such as: Employee appreciation day, incentives, Holiday dances for the residents, and company wide communication through frequent surveys and emails. I have been a DCP at ACR homes for the past 10 months and have had a wonderful experience! The schedule is very flexible and allows me a healthy balance between work and classes/extracurriculars. It is very rewarding to establish rapport with the residents and know you are making a difference in the lives of others every time you go to work. I have built strong relationships with my coworkers and my house supervisor. They have all helped me feel confident and comfortable in my abilities at ACR. I want to work as a speech-language pathologist, so experiencing different forms of communication has been essential for me to grow as a future clinician. Working at ACR Homes has numerous pros. Some of the most obvious ones to me are the relationships that are built. Not only with coworkers but with the residents. I have built a relationship with each resident that is unique in its own way. In addition, each resident has their own unique set of cares and medical situations. This is very beneficial in that I have been able to broaden my understanding of medicine and my ability to handle certain behaviors. Depending on the location/house a staff member is working at, the behaviors of the residents can sometimes be verbally harsh but are usually easily redirected. This to me is almost a pro. ACR provides care for people with disabilities in a group home setting. The residents health, safety, and well-being are the top priority. As a staff, you learn many medical and communication skills and are taught (through paid training) how to help the residents with their needs. Staff often accompany residents in outings which are always fun! ACR provides events for residents, such as a company wide dance. The company also holds events for staff to help maintain staff wellness. I have enjoyed learning things from the residents I have the opportunity to work with and the other staff as well. The pay is alright but there are lots of ways to earn more money within the company once you get started! I enjoy getting to work with and learn from the residents I get to help each week! read more

I've been working at ACR Homes for the past two years, and I think my experience here has really changed my life. Working at ACR Homes is definitely not an ordinary job. You're given the opportunity to care for the livelihood of others and meet the physical, mental, and emotional needs of another human's life. ACR is a truly awesome company to work for. I started working with ACR 5 years ago when I was in school. When I graduated with my degree, I got a job in my career field but I have stayed working with ACR a few times per month because I just can't leave them! The bond you build with the residents is very strong and you become a part of their lives. I started working for this company in May 2017, it was stressful at the beginning; however, once learning everything it became much more enjoyable. This job is the most rewarding job I have ever had. I only was planning to stay for 6 months, but I have now been in the company for a year and a half and don't plan on leaving anytime soon.
