Beautiful sunset/ view of the lake and moon
Tiff G.

Had an amazing time camping for 2 days here with my family! Only downside was that we were on a slant which made the tent lean and we slept sideways both nights :(. Other than that, the lake was great, camp site and bathrooms were clean and our camp neighbors were friendly. We would definitely camp here again, just not at sight 25 lol unless you like leaning

We loved our two night stay here. There was a lot of wild life, deer would walk right up to us. There's no security or noise control form what I saw but everyone was pretty respectful. Bathrooms were a bit dirty, but better than a porta potty!

Spot number 131. It's the view that amazing!!

We just got back from it. It was super hottttttt and too much heat for me!! I know it's summer but this campground doesn't have a lot of big trees so there's no shed for you. 6am starts to heat up and by 7:30am, it's super warm. My campsite spot number 131, it was such a great view and we have a direct walk way to the beach on the lake down from our spot. I really recommend this spot. Also a plus with the roof over the table which nobody has it but this spot. It helps us to get some shed while sitting and eating food. You need to have a plastic tarp to do awning for more shed! Believe me it would help so much The toilet and shower in our area was not that great. It was that clean and the shower room was flooded and the water was super hot on the hot day--no please We had 2 kids with us on this trip and they both said that don't come back here again because of the heat and no shed at all. However, they liked to play in the water even though the water wasn't that clear and clean because of the mud in the bottom and there's a bunch of rocks on the shores. You need a pair of water shoes! Hope this help even a bit. The best: the view from our spot and direct access to the beach down there. Also only 9 mins by car to a grocery outlet to grab some ice-cream and all things you need. The worst: the heat and no sheds due to not many big trees. The toilet was okay if you need it. The night was still hot the temp was not that differ from the day time. Not much wind!

View from our site. The water is low right now

We were site 91, by the water. I read all of these reviews after I had reserved our spot and was honestly a little nervous before going. We did not experience what a lot of these reviews said. We went the weekend before Memorial Day! Pros: beautiful views. The parking space at our site was long. Ranger went around at 10pm warning the groups next to us of noise levels. The rangers and booth staff were extremely friendly. Running water and flushing toilets. It was a very simple campground for anyone looking to stay somewhere that they can fish or go boating during the day. Cons: dry with fox tails (we were concerned for our dogs). The groups around us were very large even though the campsite had a "maximum". Both groups next to us had at least 10 adults and a few kids. This could be a pro if you're one of those groups, but it's a con if you're needing to sleep or if you don't like groups putting their items close to you. The ranger warned them of noise levels but did not come back around after 10pm. One of the toilets looked like it had been clogged for a few days, both stalls had run out of toilet paper by our second day. Boats were out on the water all night and they were LOUD, hard to sleep through at times. If you go down to the water you need solid water shoes right now. The water is so low, making the shore very rocky and painful. We did not see an infestation of bees/wasps. We did not see any out of the ordinary bugs in the water.

We had a great time camping here over the weekend. Ok so it was way too hot but this weekend was way to hot no matter where you are. The water is super low but felt amazing. It was nice to relax at dusk and watch the deer in the fields . Rangers patrol the park all day and night , we really like that . The place is clean . Bathrooms are clean with flush toilets . I could not get the coin shower to work. That kinda of sucked. Make sure to pack sun block and walking shoes to make it down to the water.

Lake by the campground

Do not recommend this campground AT ALL. The land you setup on is NOT even at all. We slept practically sloped because of the uneven ground. We arrived on Saturday and the people around us were mostly families and pretty chill, however, since we were checking out on Monday, many many super weird people came in as the families left on Sunday. At 3:00am on Monday some guy tried breaking into our tent and was scared off because I yelled at him that I was awake. The rangers barely come by to check up, there isn't much shade, the lake is super murky and dirty. 0/10. We thought we would take a shot since we wanted to go camping and this was the only place with a spot open, thinking people with negative reviews were being babies, we were WRONG. PROS: - Only PRO is the bathrooms are clean enough to use the toilets, but the ground was filthy which I can get over. - water spigots CONS: No security / ranger presence Dirty lake Extremely uneven surfaces for almost all sites (you will be sleeping slanted) Very little shade Criminals (as explained, someone tried to break into my tent) Shady people (around even on Saturday) Amenities: Water spigots for fresh water (do not drink, only use for cooking and cleaning pots and pans) Bathrooms Showers (coin operated) Bbq and fire pits on each camp ground Tons of firewood shops very close to the campground

Part of the lakes view, very warm water tho

Recomendable 100% there's a small town near the campsite. Like 10 minutes away and we didn't got to see mosquitoes or get bitten by them.

Site #38

I had a great time at this campground. Everything was clean and well kept. If it wasn't, it was fixed the next day. I will definitely be camping here again!! Also, Riley was such a big help when someone was in my site and needed to be directed somewhere else!

I was on a summer weekend drive around Calaveras County. We were near New Hogan Lake. It's off…read moreRoute 12, 26, and 49. So I had a bright idea to drive by and visit the lake to check it out. I e never been before. On hindsight, probably a hot valley summer day is not the best time for my first ever visit, especially for an impromptu one. We drove to the Lake overlook. The overlook parking lot had lots of spots. It's right next to the park headquarters office, There is no fee to view the overlook, use the children's play area, walk the nearby trails, or access the shoreline by foot. There is a picnic pavilion but not sure if it's first come, first serve or by reservation. The website has no info about that. The overlook did have some big beautiful stately trees, that gave off smoke shade where some benches were placed. The overlook looked down onto the lake and valley. Spectacular views. There are some trails leading to the lake and surrounding areas. The trails have no shade. The shoreline has minimal shade as well. The shoreline is jagged rocky not soft sand. And did I mention it's HOT in the summer. Mentioning it again because it's worth mentioning. Was it worth driving specifically to look at this overlook? Probably not. But if you happen to be in the area, why not. Another thing that caught my eye was the overlook's large wood sign with carved lettering. The sign provided info and history. But since the sign is painted all in one color, the letters were not easily visible. It was difficult to see the lettering to read the sign. Possibly they have not gotten around to painting the letters, and it's not intentional to be left like that. Painting the engraved words in a contrasting color would make those letters pop. New Hogan Lake was created in 1964 with the completion of the New Hogan Dam. The lake contains 50 miles of shoreline. As a family we had decided to change our camping site after 15+ years. Someone recommended this…read morecampground to us. I can say there are only two things going for this place, the amount of shade and the fishing. Everything else was pretty bad. Coming here it was a good easy ride. The person at the front gate was very friendly, unpacking wasn't too bad but the leveling of the ground sucked. Everything was at a slant, things kept falling off the tables we brought and even our beds we crooked. The water was low, which is expected but it was pretty clean and there was actually fish caught. Going towards night time maybe about 7:45pm we encountered a very upsetting incident. A female park ranger working on Friday night on August 14, we were bombarded with an onslaught of yelling. No warnings like, Hi group or Hello all, just need a word, she straight up came up to us and was yelling my brother's name and camp site because she had to "warn" him because he parked wrong. My brother is a permanent disabled person and he did park in the wrong spot but the approach of the the park ranger could have been nicer. She passed by our speaker and said our music was way to f***** loud and we had small children around, but it really wasn't. Then when we asked questions she got really aggressive. My husband mentioned that he thought quiet time was 10pm, she pointed her finger at him and said there is an ordinance where I can site you now for day time noise citation. Everything she threw at us always..I can give you a citation. I think I understand that maybe she has to be a little tough because there are some who do not follow rules, but we have been camping for a long time with our kids and we have never been kicked out or humiliated like this. I think there needs to be a better way to communicate without coming off like it is a power trip or upsetting visitors. I do not like giving bad reviews but I just could not pass this by. Unfortunately we will not be coming back but I hope those who do will have a better experience than us.

My family has been camping at Lake Camanche every year for the past 12 years. What started with…read morebabies, including one who was only 3 months old, has become a cherished family tradition. We typically camp with 40-55 family members, reserving multiple campsites and group sites to accommodate everyone. Many of our children have literally grown up camping here, and this annual trip has always been something our entire family looks forward to. This year, our group included nearly 60 people of all ages. We reserved multiple campsites and a group site, stayed within the occupancy limits, and paid for additional vehicle parking. We expected another fun weekend together, but instead it became one of the worst camping experiences we've ever had. On the first morning, we made a mistake. We woke up too early while preparing breakfast, and our music was too loud. A ranger responded to a complaint, and we immediately apologized, accepted responsibility, and made sure it would not happen again. Unfortunately, after that interaction, it felt like we were under constant scrutiny. Rangers repeatedly drove past our campsites, slowed down to watch us, and frequently stopped to tell us we were too loud even during daytime hours when quiet hours were not in effect. We were not throwing a wild party, we were simply spending time together as a large family. We lowered the music whenever asked, did our best to keep conversations down, and complied with every request. At no point were we told what specific daytime noise standard we were supposedly violating. The second night, we observed quiet hours after 10:00 p.m. and the next morning we remained quiet until after 8:00 a.m. Despite following the rules, the repeated drive-bys and warnings continued. Had the ranger simply asked us one final time to lower the noise, we would have gladly complied as we had throughout the weekend. Around 7:00 p.m. on our final evening, one family member was setting up a camera for our annual family photo. We had not yet gathered as a group. As a ranger drove by, the camera happened to be pointed in his direction while the angle was being adjusted. He stopped, accused us of recording him, claimed we were still too loud, and informed us that we were being evicted because we had already received two warnings. The sheriff was called, and we were given only 1 1/2 hours to gather nearly 60 people, pack multiple campsites, and leave or face arrest. The way this was handled was heartbreaking. We hadn't even eaten dinner. Our children overheard repeated statements about being arrested, became frightened, and several were crying. Instead of remembering our final night together, they now remember being rushed out under the threat of arrest. What hurts most is what they interrupted. The children and young adults had planned a surprise dinner for all the parents, aunts, and uncles. After years of watching the adults cook, they were finally old enough to take over the kitchen themselves. It was supposed to be a milestone after 12 years of family camping. Instead, it became a memory of fear and heartbreak. Beyond our experience with the rangers, we also noticed that the campground itself has declined. The restrooms were dirty even after staff had supposedly cleaned them. Two sinks remained clogged, toilet paper was left on the floor, and the restroom floors were still filthy. While cleaning the restroom, a staff member loudly yelled at several of the women in our group instead of speaking respectfully, making an already unpleasant experience even worse. We understand that campground rules exist for everyone, and we accept responsibility for our mistake on the first morning. However, there is a difference between enforcing the rules and making guests feel targeted throughout their stay. If large groups are expected to remain nearly silent during the day, then perhaps the group campsites should be located farther away from individual campsites. After 12 wonderful years of making memories here, it is heartbreaking that our family's tradition ended this way. We will not be returning. Thank you, Lake Camanche and EBMUD, for turning what should have been another joyful family reunion into an experience our children will never forget... for all the wrong reasons.

Review for the log cabin with the double bunks and full bed…read more Let's start with what we loved. The staff is super friendly and the campground is a quick drive to town, not far from Ironstone Winery and Murphy's. The cabin was spacious and we loved that there was some tree cover for shade. Also thought the cooking pavilion with sinks and stove burners was really convenient. With that said, was it worth $187.50 per night to stay in a log cabin with no amenities, that not been cleaned ahead of arrival? No, wouldn't do it again. Upon arriving to our cabin and paying $25 to check in 3 hours early we found it full of spider webs and leaves. We also noticed that when other people had checked out during out stay no one came by to check or clean the cabins. Our cabin had 2 ceiling fans, one of which the chain was broken or removed so only worked with the light on. This made for very hot nights. The bathrooms were close by and pretty clean but 1 of the 2 bathrooms was locked and unavailable for the majority of our stay. The grounds are pretty desolate, its all paventment and gravel. There is a sand volleyball court where you can also play badminton and a basketball hoop with a dirt court. The pool is not heated but in the thick of hot August it was refreshing. It is old and needs maintenance but did the trick to cool us down. The office has a store, but calling it that is a stretch. It has some candy, soda, firewood and ice. If you forgot something it would mean a short drive to town for provisions. For what we got at that price, I would not book again.
