Boarded my dog at Acme Creek Kennels on Friday and was supposed to pick her up Monday. Called Monday early afternoon to let them know plans changed and she needed to stay until Tuesday - they said no problem. They called me late Monday afternoon to inform me they had given my dog to the wrong people! Thankfully, the other people brought her back, but they got all the way home before realizing that it wasn't their dog. Not shockingly, the kennel never even knew they gave the wrong dog to the wrong people until the people called, thank goodness they did! When I picked her up on Tuesday, the kennel could not find her bag or any of the contents, (blanket, bone, toys), that I sent with her. After 30 minutes of "looking", they found her blanket on the couch in their waiting room and then told me that she destroyed her bag and all her toys and they had to throw them away. I don't believe this to be true, as she doesn't destroy her "babies", and loves carrying them around with her all day long. As they didn't even know it was our dog that they gave to someone else, I don't necessarily trust that they didn't give her belongings to someone else, or feed her different food, or even give her medication that didn't belong to her. We used to love this place, but it has really gone downhill the last few times that we have boarded our dogs here. We will never be returning. read more

I regret not reading all of the reviews for Acme Creek Kennels. We had left our pets there twice before this stay and never felt secure in our decision with leaving them there. The staff was never very friendly or welcoming. When we picked up our pups yesterday we were not greeted, just stared at by the 4 individuals behind the counter. The interaction went further south from there. On the way one pup vomited immediately in the car. It was absolutely putrid. He has diarrhea and is still in bed. They were both also extremely thirsty. The only thing this business is interested in is the money. I ask for a few pictures of my baby because he just had surgery and I was worried about him. My vet told me this place was great, NOT. The owner called me back after I spoke with staff. She yelled for 5 minutes with excuses about why they couldn't provide a simple service. After I paid them $750. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!! I would never go back! I had a scheduled visit to go see the kennels. I drove an hour out of my way. I got there and they would not allow us inside. They did not tell us that they wouldn't let us inside until we actually got there. They were willing to show us the fenced area outside. I'm not sure what good that does, it's a fenced in area big deal. This is right at the end of Covid, most of the businesses in the area were at least up to 50%. There was no one else in the parking lot. Both my husband and I had masks on and we've both been vaccinated. We told the person that, and they still wouldn't let us inside to see their facilities. I was a little concerned how Tanner would react with all the changes going on with the move but he walked in and never looked back! He loves going there when we are out of town. PLEASE do NOT send your pets here! I've heard horror stories about what happens behind the scenes (abuse and neglect). Your animals don't get the bedding you provide and the kennels behind the cozy, warm building customers enter are in cold, garage-like buildings. tr;dl: There are huge red flags with Acme Creek Kennels, and I will never return! Unfortunately, my cage-free kennel that I have used for years had to close unexpectedly for unforeseen circumstances, and ACK was mentioned by a friend who used them once. I will never return for the various reasons below. (1) LACK OF COMMUNICATION: My first phone call with ACK to schedule the time my dog would be first staying there, there was minimal information and communication from the person on the phone. I felt like I needed to play 100 questions to get any information out of them regarding their facility and services, as I was a new client. No information was forthcoming. They just wanted the dates I would be bringing in my dog. The 3 different times my dog stayed at ACK, again, severe lack of communication of how my dog did while he was there, any concerns, any positives, nothing from anyone. The other two cage free facilities my dog has been to always gave me a report card of his stay and the staff was overjoyed to tell me how my dog did or any concerns they may have had. Not at ACK! When I mentioned this to the owner, she responded with "Well did you even ask?" Yes, I would actually call after I would leave, giving the employees a chance to provide any type of information to me, but when I would call, I would get "Well, I was never working when your dog was here" or "There are no notes, so he was probably fine." Why should I have to play 100 questions to get any type of information out about my dog? Additionally, with my dog being new to this facility, there was no mention of my dog's lack of eating - which happens every single time I leave him with a family member or at a kennel. I had to ask them, where they did admit my dog did not eat the first two days (but they still threw out his food, which they admitted to me when I have asked why if he didn't eat was his food still gone? They throw out all food after feeding time, which to me is a huge waste, especially for the price I pay for dog food.) (2) NO SCREENING OR APPLICATION: When I dropped my dog off the first time to stay at ACK, there was no application or information they requested from me. They literally wanted to confirm when I was picking up my dog and that was it. I waited to see if there was more, but she said I was set. I then reminded her this was my dog's first time at ACK and asked if there was an application or new client form, or if she wanted my contact information or vet's information, where she replied with "Oh, sure, if you want to fill this out you can." She did not seem worried about it at all and didn't seem to care. I asked if she wanted to see my dog interact with any other dogs to make sure there were not issues with behaviors and playing with other dogs (I know there are none, but wanted to see how they screen their clients). The girl said there was no need. They don't screen their dogs at all, which to me is a concern, especially when they promise to have a "deluxe" experience where your dog is outside playing with other dogs multiple times a day (more on that later). (3) FACILITY: Like many other people have mentioned in their poor reviews of ACK, you are not able to see the facility. To me, this is a huge red flag! When I dropped my dog off the first time, I asked to see where he would be staying and I asked for a tour of the facility. They only showed me four small kennels which are located right next to the front counter, where one of them had two medium sized dogs in one small kennel. Not sure if they are from the same family, but they looked cramped together. I asked to see where my dog would be staying because he's a giant breed dog, and the girl stated he would be in another building. I asked to see that building, but she wouldn't allow me to. I asked why because it would be nice to know where my dog will be while he's staying at ACK and to make sure the kennel is a comfortable size for a 170# giant breed dog. I just got "we don't allow that, but he will be in a larger kennel than the ones you saw." I have never been denied the opportunity to tour other kennel facilities before, until ACK. I'm just supposed to take their word for it, especially with their severe lack of communication from the very beginning. It's also hard to believe them when they say there is a difference between the general kenneling and the deluxe kenneling when I'm not allowed to see the facility and out of the 6 times I have been to the facility (3 drop-offs & 3 pick-ups), I have never seen any dogs outside in the yard playing. read more

My dogs (2) have been boarded at Acme Creek Kennels several times. I am happy with the care they have received, and they don't smell like kennel when I pick them up. I was asked to bring any special foods they might need, toys they are especially fond of, and/or a blanket that they like. I don't understand why I see only bad ratings posted. Going back further I found good ratings in 2017 that are current and not posted up front. Yet they have bad ratings posted from 2013 and 2014 up front. If I were the owners, I would be very angry. There are plenty of good ratings to choose from. I was also asked about my veterinarian and given their policy on who they use if a dog becomes ill. Your vaccines must all be current, and they keep them on file. Their hours of operation are on their phone greeting. They also have it in writing. I think there must be something wrong with Yelp's software. read more

We boarded our dog here and it was a fairly unpleasant experience. The girl who checked us in didn't explain much about the pricing or pick up times. When I showed up to pick up our dog it was just after 5 pm and the owner was extremely rude. We were excited to hear how our dog was and how she enjoyed her stay, instead I got berated by this woman. We recently moved to TVC and needed to find a safe, clean and close kennel to board our two fur babies. We found ACK via a reference from a friend. When we contacted ACK they were friendly and informative. As new clients we needed to provide our contact info., vet records and vaccination records (for obvious reasons). We asked to tour the facility on a Saturday and they were VERY accommodating. It was clean, warm (considering it was 12 degrees outside) and the staff was friendly. We left our dogs overnight and called a couple of times to check in on them, with no issues. When we picked them up they were very happy! The staff was super! RED FLAGS EVERYWHERE!! I called the kennel and asked to have a tour. The young lady who answered said the kennel was under renovation so the owner would have to call back. I waited a week and called again. This time, she seemed annoyed. But they could give me a tour on a specific day and time (apparently no permission needed now), but we couldn't just come during any business hours. And please bring my dog. We arrived on time but were immediately told that our dog couldn't come past the lobby. So why were we asked to bring him?? AND they could only take one of us at a time back. I said I wanted to go back with, at the least, my husband so that we had the same experience and could discuss this. Again, she became annoyed but agreed. I don't know if this is the young lady I spoke with on the phone. She didn't introduce herself or tell me her role at the kennel. The owner who had to approve the tour was no where to be found. Not one bit of information was given unless I asked. We went to a small room near the reception desk and were told we could go no further. Insurance wouldn't allow them to show me the majority of the kennel. What?? What we did see was a row of rather small crates with a wooden top. On the wooden top was a lit candle in a jar. Okay, so anyone else ever had those jars crack? Isn't that why you never put them on wood? But there is was, lit over the head of four dogs (three in one crate, one in another). I know what a kennel smells like! What are you trying to cover up? I asked what size crate my dog would be in (he is a large 90lb dog), and the girl, even more annoyed than ever with my pesky questions, indicated to a wall of about six crates. When I asked her to be more specific, she stared blankly. I asked, pointing to one of the larger crates, if this was the size. She shrugged and nodded. Very reassuring.... Ugh. I was told not to worry about the smaller crate size - that the crates opened up to a large outdoor run. But we weren't allowed to see the run. When I asked why it was so dark through the tiny window at the top of the wall facing the run, I was told that it was a covered run with sides. So it isn't really outside, I questioned. The dogs receive no sunlight unless they are out in the yard for their once a day 20 minute play? I could pay for the deluxe package, she sniped. They got more time outside if I was willing to pay for it. (I hadn't even told her what package I wanted, BTW). Why couldn't I see where my dog would be? Insurance wouldn't allow it, she repeated. How could I leave my dog somewhere I can't see? How is this a kennel tour? Why was I here? Well, she explained, they had three buildings and they were all the same. Exactly the same? I asked. The exact same layout? "Pretty much", she shrugged. At this point the owner's son ran up to us with his little 20-something chest puffed out, vehemently insisting that they were the best kennel in the area. Ask anyone! Every vet in the area will tell me that they are the best. Such arrogance! When I told him that my vet actually recommended another kennel, you would have thought I had had thrown doggie poo at him! He turned red and darned near stomped his little feet! I told him that I had heard good things, and that my vet didn't say to NOT go there. My vet just recommended another kennel. We happened to live very close, however, and thought it might work for us from a convenience standpoint. We were then asked to leave the kennel area - we were being unreasonable and upsetting the dogs. My voice was never raised, nor was my husbands. But THAT is apparently why they didn't allow people back in the kennels. It upset the dogs and made them have diarrhea and they then had to explain to the angry owners why their dogs had diarrhea. IS THAT A JOKE?? People walking in the kennel causes the dogs to have diarrhea? Seriously? Just think about that for a minute.... I told them that I had NEVER dropped my dog at a kennel without seeing it. Rude boy then told me that THAT was why they were the best. They cared more about the dogs than other kennels who allowed people to give their boarders diarrhea. This was clearly doing battle with an unarmed opponent. If a person walking through a kennel of dogs pushes those dogs over the edge, then I would say the kennel should look at itself. What a joke! Absolutely ridiculous. By being there, when were asked to come and be there, we caused the other dogs to become ill. Why we didn't run at that point is beyond me. It was absolutely surreal! So I asked that, if I couldn't truly see the kennel could she at least show me the outside. Yes, I could look around one bit of the fence and see one of the yards. Apparently, this was the yard that "didn't have any rocks, so the dogs who had just been bathed, could come out and not worry." What? Rocks? Dogs worry? That did it. We were out, never to return. Addition to Kristen's yelp review: (4) CLEANLINESS OF FACILITY/BATHS: All three times I have asked for a kennel bath before I have picked up my dog. The first time, I received a call the morning I was going to pick up my dog and was told it was going to cost 3 times more than I was originally quoted, and they wanted to make sure I wanted to pay that much because they needed to give him two baths. I told them no. When I picked him up, he wasn't muddy at all - he just smelled a little bit like urine. The second time he stayed at ACK, I asked for a kennel bath, but he didn't get one because "the groomer didn't come into work" (come to find out, it's the owner who does the baths), so I didn't get a kennel bath and, again, my dog smelled like pee. The third time, which was after a long vacation, I picked up my dog after paying for a $50 kennel bath (reasonable for a giant breed dog) and soon as I got into my car, I called ACK to complain because the smell of urine coming from my dog was absolutely atrocious! I was not going to pay for a $50 bath that either did not happen, was not done properly, or my dog got a bath but then turned around to lay in an unclean, urine filled kennel again. The owner wouldn't talk to me when I called to talk to her, but after I complained to the girl on the phone, the owner decided to call me back. Carol (the owner) proceeded to blame everything on my dog and his hair (more on this in #5). Again, red flags. She proceeded to tell me I could bring my dog back in and she would give him another bath. I declined and told her I would not be wasting my time driving 45 minutes back across town when she couldn't provide a proper bath the first time around. I told her I would be going to our trusted, familiar groomer who I knew could provide a thorough bath. Unfortunately, we were unable to get into our trusted groomer right away, and the horrible smell of urine was throughout our entire house until we waited. I have never smelled urine so bad in my entire life, and my dog wreaked of it! This definitely makes me question the cleanliness of the kennels and how "deluxe" the stay really is I'm paying for. The first two stays my dog had were for two evenings and he smelled of urine. After a longer vacation for his third stay, my poor dog wreaked of urine, even after getting a supposed kennel bath. (5) CAROL: Even when you call to talk to Carol, she doesn't want to talk to you, until after she hears why you are calling her through staff. Throughout the entire conversation I had with Carol on the phone regarding my dissatisfaction of the kennel bath she gave my dog, she continuously blamed my dog and his hair for smelling like urine. I then expressed all of my other concerns (which are listed above in this review), where she never took any responsible for anything that has gone wrong or concerns I have had during the 3 times my dog has been to ACK. She just wanted to tell me how amazing she is and how amazing her facility is and no one ever complains about ACK (reviews say otherwise). Everything was my fault and my issue. My fault for not asking more than 100 questions. My fault for not filling out a new client form beforehand, even though I was never asked to do so. My fault for my dog having thick hair, so the urine smell staying in it. My fault for not trusting her because I can't see the full facility. My fault for not trusting her that there is really a difference between the general boarding and the deluxe boarding, which is $10 more a day and my dog is supposed to be let out more times to play. And the list goes on. No apologizes, no accountability for her actions or her staff's actions, nothing. Everything was my fault and Carol & ACK is perfect and amazing, and everything I have experienced is my issue and has only ever happened to me. Carol claims to be the best kennel in all of Traverse City and the surrounding area. If this statement was true, then why on the three occasions my dog has been to ACK has my dog been able to get in last minute without a problem (even over spring break, where other places booked up a couple months in advance)? (6) PAYMENT: For someone with the best boarding facility in Traverse City, it makes you question why she only accepts cash and check, and you get a discount if you pay in cash. Red flag! Also, your "receipt" is handwritten, where I saw no documentation on their end for record keeping purposes. I hate saying it, but it honestly seems like an under the table business and possible tax fraud for those paying in cash. Acme Creek Kennels definitely has some loyal clients, especially when you see them berating clients who are unhappy and state their unpleasant reviews for others to be aware. I will definitely not be going back to ACK, and my vet will also not be recommending ACK anymore to their patients after hearing my concerns. read more

After much research and knowing what a good kennel is to look like, this place is beyond amazing. I am so happy my friend at Penrods Canoe Livery recommended it. As soon as we pulled down their beautiful path you could hear dogs playing and staff interacting. I first peeked around a very nice wooden fence with a viewing area to the fenced in play area and the happy dogs confirmed the sound from the drive. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by an employee at the front desk. Or one appears within minutes (they have multiple employees but if you did as me and created a surprise visit, its good to know they are always alert and the staff was happy to greet me and my puppies). The took my puppies to one of the play yard to interact with other dogs about their size and energy level. I was provided a tour. Remember they were not expecting me so it was even more pleasant to see everything spotless, no unpleasant odors, some older dogs happily resting on cots with the more energetic broken up into different play groups and yards outside. They even have an adorable puppy room (my puppies being a large breed were a bit large for that area, but was in use and was staffed. Since then I have used Carol's Acme Creek Kennel many times. My puppies jump up and down with excitement as we get close and cannot wait to get out of the car. We have normally used the day care, but I just boarded them and when I returned they were bathed, happy, not anxious at all and the feeling was similar to dropping your kids off at kindergarten the first time and want to stay and play. Thank you Carol and the entire team for taking such good care of my 2 very large puppies. oh and check at their website, it has all of the pricing. And as most places they do have a strict pick up time unless you call to say you will be late, but in my mind thats to avoid everyone from taking advantage and being late. Again sort of like aftercare with human children. This is a wonderful place. read more

Visited recently to board our dog and we were all but ignored from the moment we arrived. Our dog was never acknowledged and we were berated a few times for our paperwork. After a phone call in which the owner made fun of the person on the other end, we requested to see the facility first since we were coming from out of town and we/our pup had never been there. We were instructed that only one person could see the facility finally, after again asking for paperwork. After a very short "tour" where I saw very little but things that made me uncomfortable, we were going to go out to our vehicle to get the paperwork. The owner was so rude and berated us, told us that we were making our dog nervous, and I finally said that we were done and not leaving our dog there. To that she expressed that we were "weird" and she didn't want our dog there. She changed the pricing a few times on us and when we explained our dog was used to cage free she threw out an absurd number for daily boarding. She wanted us to get out of there and we did, with our dog in hand. Good luck with this place. I wouldn't keep a shoe there for care. read more

Had to review after reading the bad ones - I bought two Labradoodles from Acmecreek - one for me and I for my daughter - though they came from different litters, they are both exceptional dogs in looks and in behavior - my Doodle has easily passed her Good Citizen requirements and the more difficult Therapy Internationals. Although I live some distence away I boarded there once and was very pleased. I can't imagine the items mentioned on the bad reviews as I found all people there, including the owner, Carol, to be very knowledgeable about their dogs and very pleasant. I have recommended their kennels to many people - their straight Labs are very good looking too. I really can't believe the low reviews - no one asked me to write this - I am certainly expecting to buy another dog from Acmecreek when our dogs are older. read more

We purchased a labradoodle puppy from Acme Creek. We are very disappointed for a number of reasons. First, In not being given an understanding that labradoodles are particularly difficult to train (which we found out later from a professional dog trainer). Then we were very disappointed that their 2 year guarantee is essentially meaningless. Then we were given a puppy infected with giardiasis and not being told specifically about this before taking the puppy home since our vet said it is important to protect humans from this parasite. Lastly, when we told them that we were having training difficulties and needed them to show us that the puppy was trainable, we were treated with extreme rudeness and the puppy was treated in a highly abusive manner (the puppy was flung on its back, pushed down with unneeded force which caused the dog to hit its head hard on the concrete floor). This was extremely distressing to the puppy and us. Later the trainer said this method of training has been proven ineffective and ultimately harmful to the dog. We left there vowing to make this known so that others would not experience the same thing. read more

Two of my dogs are Acme Creek Labradoodles that are amazing dogs! They have great personalities and temperaments! I also have boarded my dogs there on many occasions. I love that there is a licensed Veterinarian Technician on staff, so that if anything should happen I know my dogs will be taken care of. I also love that my dogs can go out in play groups and make new dog friends. Every time I pull up to Acme Creek my dogs are excited and run to the door to get started playing and getting lots of love from the staff! I would never board my dogs anyplace else! read more

We purchased our dog from Acme Creek in March 2014. She was a beautiful and healthy puppy when we got her and still is today. She is exceptional in looks(chocolate phantom) and in temperament. She is an extremely loving dog and loves other dogs and people. She is high energy at times, but so are all labradoodles, but has been easy to train. The last obedience class trainer even commented on how easy she was to train and how very smart labradoodles are in general. We would definitely purchase another puppy from Acme in the future!!!!! read more

The facilities are very nice, with lots of room for the dogs to run and play. Pick up time for dogs is 1:00 and if you don't pick up your dog by 1:00 they will charge you for an extra day. I was coming home from Detroit and got stuck behind an accident in morning rush hour traffic on i-75. I called the kennel to tell them I would be about an hour late and was told "no problem", when I got to the kennel 1:45 (45 minutes late) to pick up my dog they charged me another $35. I understand their are rules and policies but there is also a thing called compassion. read more

When my wife and I travel or want a break from our dogs we take them to Acme Creek Kennel. Initially we started going there because our Veterinarian takes her dogs there, best recommendation we received. The facility is very clean and very well managed. Our dogs can be a bit fussy but once they realize where they are when we drive in, they're ready to play. We are very cautious about our three girls and who we have care for them and Acme Creek Kennel is second to none. We were gone for an extended trip, 6 weeks, and Carol posted pictures daily so we could see them. It was obvious from the photos our girls were in good hands. We also take them over occasionally for just "day care" so they can socialize with other dogs and we can have a day without worrying about them if we're out. They always come back with tails wagging and sometimes don't want to leave the kennel, they're having such a good time. This is a kennel that treat our dogs as if they were their dogs. read more

We boarded twice, very friendly staff, a little more than our other boarder but worth it. Lots of cool options like river walk and toys. Most places have hours posted and it is always good to find out ahead of time so you can pick before they close.
