I waited three months before I contacted ALG. The reason for waiting is I figured my case was unique in that even though I was NOT at fault, Arizona has a law which says if you were the one making the left turn in the intersection, the accident is your fault (no questions asked, your fault, final). I contacted ALG (they were closest to my home) for consultation. They confirmed that, yes, Steve you were making a left turn, thus Arizona says the accident is your fault. At this point, I was trying to get some help with the legalities of the accident, help with the paper work, the medical bills, etc. (There were a lot of bills, I was confined to a wheel-chair for 3 1/2 months after the accident, and had a total of six surgeries). I had three primary surgeons for my crushed left foot (8 bones broken in my foot), my fibula and tibia bones were broken just below my left knee, I had a broken collar-bone (clavicle) on the left side (from the seat belt no doubt), 5 broken ribs on the left side, and several other injuries. Derick and another attorney with ALG confirmed that yes, legally it was my fault, but agreed to take on the case. Their obvious honesty with me was refreshing, and both confirmed that the outcome would most likely not be good for me. I explained I'm trying to get help from my auto insurance and the person who hit me, his insurance to pay some of the bills. I did not cause this accident, because, while I was waiting for the oncoming traffic to clear so I could make a left turn, the light went to yellow, then red. At this point, I checked the traffic to ensure I could turn left, I did that and began my turn. As I began turning I was slammed into by an oncoming full size SUV, which I did not see before beginning my turn. I woke up three days later in the hospital, not knowing what happened. Now it was clear to me this person had run the red light, in an attempt to beat it -but obviously he did not. He was going so fast, I did not see him coming trying to beat the light. He demolished my truck and threw me and my truck backward into the cross-walk, about 20 to 25 feet back. I realized later that to be able to throw me backward this far, he had to be going beyond the speed limit. With my lawyer getting the insurance companies involved, after their investigations they determined that this accident was not my fault (though legally the state said it was).
After my lawyers hard work, diligence, investigation, and relentless pursuit of the details of this accident, they completed the case and were able to get the insurance companies to agree with the specifics of the accident. They both later sent me a later confirming the accident was not my fault. My lawyer Derick and his main assistant, Viviana worked very hard to dig out the truth, details and got all the doctors and their assistants, etc. to agree on final payments for my injuries. The cost of my medical bills, (including a week in intensive care) and 11 days in the hospital, the follow-up medical visits I had for six months after the accident, some re-habilitation work, wheel chair's, walker, walking boot, etc. was approximately one half million dollars. I paid out of my pocket about $2,500 of this. I was left with no other medical bills, ALG had negotiated all of my medical cost's to nothing left owing by me. Surprisingly, I was even given a significant settlement dollar amount, a total surprise as I expected to get nothing.
