I waited until finishing level A1 before reviewing the Italian courses offered at ItalCultura as…read morethe tiny classroom, Aula (room) 1, was starting to become alarmingly full. Now that I'm safely well ahead of you in my studies, I will invite you to join. (; As soon as you exit the elevator to the floor where the Italian Cultural Institute is housed, you are transported. The instructors are all Italian, and there is often a cultural program going on on the floor during the evening classes, so you are immersed in Italian culture. I was hesitant to take night classes as I'm usually pooped after work, but this fear was abandoned on day one of class A1-1. Classes are taught in Italian, and the instructors are masters of judging exactly when to switch to English and when to switch back. You may not catch every word, and this can be intimidating at first, but it's astounding how quickly your ear adjusts. The classes are challenging and engaging, and Silvia is one of the best instructors I've ever had. This is coming from a life-long student. The staff is friendly and helpful, and I cannot describe to you the infectious energy you will experience and share with your fellow students and instructors at this extraordinary institution. Originally I'd wanted to learn enough Italian to converse adequately during my travels. Now I'm inspired to try and become fluent enough to be able to read Umberto Eco in his native language.

In fact, I am writing this review as I sit in a lounge they have near the classrooms, waiting for my kid to come out, drinking free coffee, over complimentary Wi-Fi. My wife has attended cultural events, concerts, meetings and gatherings. Everything around Spanish culture and Language. They have a very well stocked library that will loan you books in Spanish, magazines, etc. I can't recommend this place enough. Give it a shot and you will not regret it. Olé !!!

But it is also their offices and a comfortably large gallery for art and media exhibitions. I was attending the gallery space for the opening reception of their extensive exhibition of contemporary artist, illustrator, cartoonist, and animator, Lorenzo Mattotti (Brescia, 1954). The organizers had worked out a logical traffic pattern from the elevators to the reception area where wine and beverages were served, then an option to go directly into the gallery space or off to a small library room, where the hors d'oeuvres table had been laid out. A well-dressed crowd of about 30 to 40 mingled throughout and were attentive when a screening of a short film about the artist was convened. So go to visit their gallery, attend a class in Italian (this is handled through another entity, which has extensive options for private or semi-private instruction at all levels and fees - http://www.italidea.org/), or check their site for lectures and other events happening there. You can see the Mattotti exhibit through July 30, 2010, Monday - Friday, 9 AM to 1 PM and 2 to 5 PM. Admission to the exhibit is free.
