This place lost track of their focus very quickly. The food quality and service took a nose dive real quickly. My worst review of the year.

My family has been coming to Toma's for nearly 2 decades (when they were in a different location)…read more This place never disappoints, the food is always amazing and the owners are accommodating. If you like middle eastern food you must try the food here. With Arabic food, sharing is the way to go. We ordered a few appetizers; hummus, fattoush, Greek salad, baba ghanoush (not pictured), tabouleh (not pictured). The reason I love going here is because of the appetizers, they remind me of how my mom and aunts make appetizers; in the traditional Iraqi way. The salads are zesty and sour, which is very typical of Iraqi cuisine but it's so delicious. The ingredients are all very fresh. I highly recommend trying the hummus and tabouleh, they're addictive. For our main meal we ordered a giant mixed platter with a bit of every meat (lamb chops, chicken souvlaki, beef schnitzel, chicken schnitzel, beef kebab tenderloin, Iraqi beef kebab). This was so delicious, everything was cooked perfectly. If you only want to try one meat I would highly recommend trying the lamb chops, I could easily eat 20 of those. The schnitzels are quite popular amongst kids, I remember ordering those all the time and they still taste as good as I remember them. And of course all the sides are amazing (especially the fries). For dessert we had tea and creme caramel, a great way to end the night. This place is awesome, we'll continue to go here especially for events (they sometimes bring DJs). The place is very clean as well (bathrooms are spotless).

I LOVE this place. I NEED this place…read more Their pita bread is TRUE Levantine pita eaten in Syria, Jordan and Israel. It's thick, chewy, tasty and takes me back to the Middle East! They make the best pita in Ontario IMPO. I much prefer it to the thin pita which I'm not used to. I also picked up 6 "warak einab" (stuffed grape/vine leaves) for $4. This is so good in the summer with a squeeze of fresh lemon. The store is a Middle Eastern gourmands dream. They have everything you need including "ras al hanut" for meat. Their restaurant is very nice too. We've dined there a few times and always enjoyed it. Their grilled chicken hearts are my favourite.

Sababa in Thornhill doesn't chase trends--it outlives them. I've been eating here for 30 years,…read morewhich in restaurant time is basically surviving a war, and Sababa is still standing, still feeding people the way it always has: honest, soulful Middle Eastern food that shows up every day and does the job right. This is the kind of place where the menu hasn't been "reimagined," because it never needed to be. The chicken skewers dinner is a personal staple--charred just enough, juicy where it counts, seasoned with the confidence. The shawarma is famous for a reason: shaved hot, spiced deep, and piled without apology. You start with the dip platter because that's what you do here--hummus, tahini, baba ghanoush--the opening handshake before the real conversation begins. Attached to the restaurant is a grocery store that feels like a lifeline--shelves of hard-to-find ingredients, spices, and staples that remind you food isn't just something you order, it's something you live with. There's also a takeout counter with a few tables, perfect for quick eats that turn into longer stays because the food demands your attention. Sam Azar founded the place, and the legend goes deeper than the menu--he even made their lentil soup recipe public, giving it away to the newspapers like a gift, not a secret. That generosity still hangs in the air. Today, his children carry the torch, and you can feel the continuity: same spirit, same standards, same refusal to mess with something that works. Sababa isn't flashy. It's better than that. It's dependable, rooted, and quietly excellent--the kind of restaurant you measure your life around, not your Instagram feed. Find calm fam atmosphere, not TikTok madness with a side of chaos. CHEERS!!!

When we got there, we were left unattended for about 8 minutes or so with no one else in line. I get it, covid 19 times means lots of orders to attend to, no biggie. We placed our orders for 2 chicken shawarma plates. It turned out they charge a small fee for using credit cards. I'm not sure if this was something this establishment was doing prior to covid 19 since this was my first visit but you would think amidst this pandemic that a restaurant would discourage the use of cash altogether, but not this place. Mind you, the fee wasn't anything big but it was the principle that matters. Anyway, the food itself wasn't all that good. The chicken was dry, the potatoes were hard, the rice had this buttery taste and their version of the white garlic sauce was something out of a ranch salad dressing bottle. Also, the hot sauce they provided was from the Red Rooster bottles you would find in Asian grocery stores. I've never ever had this kind of hot sauce from a shawarma joint, lol. Definitely not coming back to this one!

The potatoes are okay but a little on the dry side. The chicken shawarma and lamb shish kebab came with a generous amount of meat and we were happy. The meals came with a hot sauce (small size) and a white creamy sauce (big size). I enjoyed the sauce but we ended up squeezing some lemon juice on our lamb to minimize the gamey taste. There was also salads that came along with the meals. I would say the chicken shawarma was better than the lamb. I think we probably would head back next time.

Fantastically fresh food that's family-friendly…read more Food: Had a couple of dishes to share, starting with the garden salad that was very fresh and cool, perfect for a home summer day yet with a hint of sweetness that made it bright and vibrant. The hummus with mushroom was also very unique, it tasted very earthy and balanced the pita very well, providing some chew and meatiness to the dish. The pide was also very nice and crispy, and you can taste each ingredient separately on the pide yet it all melds together with the fragrant spices combine it all. Service: There was plenty of seating available in the restaurant, and the people were all very friendly. As it was our first time, the server helped provide some recommendations and walked us through some favourites on the menu. Because of the time I went , there was only on other person in the dining room. You can see back into the kitchen. I like that be because the dining room usually smells pretty good. The server was from Turkey and he had a bit of an accent which made me think the food would be a little more authentic. On the recommendation of the server I got the Cokertme Kebab. It doesn't quite look like it does in the menu picture but it was really good. The beef strips were well seasoned and tender. The yogurt complimented the beef very well and the chips added good texture. I would definitely recommend giving it a try.
