Food 6.5/10 Service 5/10 Ambiance 5.9/10 I highly recommend this place for a small Jewish family dinner

My friend and I had a bit of a hankering for falafel, and decided to have a sit down at Sababa. Tucked away nicely in a older strip plaza west of Steeles and Yonge, Sababa remains a popular establishment, with throngs of customers lining up for some authentic middle eastern fare. We started with their classic lentil soup, a thick and hearty bowl of deliciousness, followed by a complementary house salad and pickled beets and olives. We each ordered the falafel plate, which came with 6 falafel balls, a smidge of tahini , and your choice of rice or fries. The plate was a bit bland, and would have been better served with a bit if Mediterranean salad. But the falafel were good, and also came with warm pita to make the sandwich. Overall, a good meal and had some take home. The service was excellent. Complementary soda refills, and periodic check ins to make sure things were going well. Definately a great option, reasonable prices and attentive service. -Zuk

Pictures do not do this place any justice, (especially when the cover photo is an unappetizing half eaten pita) but I can assure you it's a great place for authentic and delicious middle eastern food that blows any chain out of the water. Not only that, but for more portions and a better value! I've been trying to find a good sit-down middle eastern restaurant, and Sababa has to be one of the better ones around. Sababa has been around for a while, and they know what they're doing if they've been around that long. First thing I have to say, is the wonderful service we had. I didn't get his name, but he made our meal extremely pleasant and his service was outstanding. While ordering, our waiter recommended instead of doing things ala carte with two platters, there was a combination platter with just about everything we would have liked to try (and more). It was a great recommendation that we missed and didn't consider. We started with a combination salad which included four salads/dips of our choice. We went with the hummus, baba ganoush, red pepper spread, and the sababa salad. All of these were amazing, and I couldn't believe how much they gave us. Each portion on the plate would have fed the entire table for the four of us, but there was FOUR of those. We loved all of them, but the red pepper spread was the winner. Sweet, and smokey from the grilled red pepper. It was delicious. There was plenty of warm pita. We also received their falafel. It wasn't dry at all and was tasty. We also were given fried eggplant with a sauce that was like/is balsamic vinegar. It was very intense. The lentil soup is also a must order, very fragrant and hearty, goes down easily. It's one of their signatures here. It's not intense and strong at all. Very mild tasting. Our waiter actually gave us a couple of extra portions! For the main dish, we ordered one of every skewer here: lamb, beef, ground meat kebab, and the chicken breast. All were grilled perfectly on their charcoal grill, the lamb and beef were chunky yet tender. They use quality meats here. It was served on a massive bed of amazing saffron rice. Again, by the time we dug into this we were already feeling it from all the salads and dips. It was the perfect portion for the four of us.

Unfortunately I am disappointed to say this. My husband and I come here so many times with 5 stars all the time but today was very disappointing. I ordered a NY steak and for it to be well done. My steak came and it was medium rare confused to say what it was because it wasn't cooked throughout properly. And hubby ordered NY steak medium rare and it came back mostly raw!! So I told the waiter about my steak it was sent back and came back medium rare and not well done. At this point I ate most of my steak because if it was sent back I didn't feel that I had the trust anymore for the cooks to make it properly after the second time. My poor husband kept eating his steak because he was humble and continued but as soon as I saw blood on his plate I was disappointed and worried and I told him NOT to eat it. Waiter came back and she said she couldn't refund us cause we already ate most of our steak... and she tried to argue with us that she asked us how steak was and we told her we didn't want to wait longer for the food to come. I'm really upset about this and I love Sababa but after this, I'm not sure if I want to come here anymore. We paid $61 for this disappointing lunch, after wanting to celebrate a special occasion with my husband. We didn't even get any discount off the terrible food we had eaten.

First time here at this long time establishment for a friends birthday. I was told that they just renovated a few days ago and it looks nice. They are missing mirrors in the bathroom, I hope they put them up. We had a great energetic server who went above and beyond to give us separate bills, including a sep one for our appetisers and one for our wine which only a few people shared. Food was ample and tasty. For appetisers we got the combination salad which comes with crispy falafels and choice of salad or dip (3). I was overwhelmed at the selection so be prepared when you order. They have 5 kinds of hummus and baba ganoush. For our mains, AT and I shared a lamb kebobs (2) $15 and a ground meat kebab. All come with potatoes or rice and salad (meh) It was tasty but not as flavourful as I hoped. Maybe the spices ? AT suspects it because it's not cooked on top of a charcoal fire that gives it that smoky taste. Dessert we ordered a trio of cakes for the birthday boy. The big tables help out with all the food but clearing the table wasn't a strong suit. He did wait patiently however with a credit card machine for each of us to punch in. If in the area, definitely come check it out.

    Shawarma takeout for $5. 95

The restaurant is pretty expensive but the take out counter at their mini grocery store is amazing! This is my to go place for Falafel pitas! For under $5, you get a delicious pita filled with fresh f alafels and veggies! The f alafels are deep fried and are very crunchy, not oily at all. For the sauce, it's up to your liking and can ask them if you want more hot sauce to add spice to your pita. I've also had their chicken Shawarma here and I must say it's very delicious. I love their pita here, and they can be purchased at a good price from their grocery store. Overall, they have great sandwiches at reasonable prices and service is quick and simple. Good for to go!

The place has upgraded a bit, now has bar seating and a tv w the news on. Got myself a free falafel today because of their raptors event. Staff were super welcoming and friendly. Props to Sababa for doing this for the community. The falafel sandwich here is so yummy (full of fresh veggies, herbs and spices, and that sauce!). Highly recommended. Will be back for the shawarma next time, which is also so tasty.

    Falafel in a fresh pita!

We have been to Sababa (groceries side!) on several occasions now and almost always (but one time) to get their delicious falafel in a pita: tried falafel for the 1st time in J's life; dunno what to eat when we're around Yonge/Steeles area (many times); brought cousins to try their falafel; to counter the bad experience we had after having shawarma from another nearby place. All times, we enjoyed the fresh and warm falafel with their spicy sauce! The falafel was so moist, and the pita was so fresh! Definitely give Sababa's falafel a try when you're in the neighbourhood!

When we got there, we were left unattended for about 8 minutes or so with no one else in line. I get it, covid 19 times means lots of orders to attend to, no biggie. We placed our orders for 2 chicken shawarma plates. It turned out they charge a small fee for using credit cards. I'm not sure if this was something this establishment was doing prior to covid 19 since this was my first visit but you would think amidst this pandemic that a restaurant would discourage the use of cash altogether, but not this place. Mind you, the fee wasn't anything big but it was the principle that matters. Anyway, the food itself wasn't all that good. The chicken was dry, the potatoes were hard, the rice had this buttery taste and their version of the white garlic sauce was something out of a ranch salad dressing bottle. Also, the hot sauce they provided was from the Red Rooster bottles you would find in Asian grocery stores. I've never ever had this kind of hot sauce from a shawarma joint, lol. Definitely not coming back to this one!

The potatoes are okay but a little on the dry side. The chicken shawarma and lamb shish kebab came with a generous amount of meat and we were happy. The meals came with a hot sauce (small size) and a white creamy sauce (big size). I enjoyed the sauce but we ended up squeezing some lemon juice on our lamb to minimize the gamey taste. There was also salads that came along with the meals. I would say the chicken shawarma was better than the lamb. I think we probably would head back next time.

Start off with a basket of free pita bread (yes, free, an adjective not commonly used in restaurants nowadays). Pita bread was hot, toasty and soft Staff recommended the eggplant appetizer instead of cauliflower, eggplant slices were seared with a nice crust with a moist gooey eggplant meat center, add a citrusy splash, perfection Ordered lamb chops and the veal tenderloin skewers. Both ordered medium rare. Unfortunately the lamb chops were more on the medium side. My veal were removed from the skewers before arriving at my table. I was able to grab a seat and read while I waited which was nice. We sat on the little patio area since it was quieter than inside and the mall wasn't too busy. I had the jallab lemonade which was really nice. A perfect balance of sweet and tartness. I usually don't love rose flavour but this combination is really good. They had a prix fix menu which included 3 dishes for I think $38. We tried the mezzes sampler and eggplant starters, both got the chicken tawouk, and tried the baklava and kaffna for dessert. We had to move tables for a reservation and as a thank you they offered us a bonus dessert and tea. Wow! If I wasn't already sold on coming back, this guaranteed it. Everything was delicious and service was wonderful. Really a delightful experience.

The take-out counter was open, so we opted for that instead. Most of the foods on display were ready-to-go and vegetarian / vegan. You can also order manakeesh (Lebanese flatbread topped with toppings such as cheese, spinach, and za'atar - akin to thin-crust pizza) to be made on site. We opted for the vegetarian mix-and-match plates, which came with either rice or salad, 5 small sides, and 3 falafels. Most of the items were pretty good, my favourites being the arnabeet (cauliflower), eggplant with chickpeas and tomato-based sauce, bamya (okra), and white cannellini beans salad. The warak enab (also called dolma or stuffed grape vine leaves) was flavourless and had too much ratio-to-grape vine leaves ratio (more rice inside that I'd like). The tabbouleh was way too salty. The other dishes were good though. Although the manakeesh was made fresh to order, it came out pretty fast. It was also extremely salty. There were a few small tables by the take-out counter, for those who wish to eat the take-out items on the spot. They packaged all the items very well to avoid leakage.
