I called Visiting Angels after hours on a…read moreMonday evening, and to my surprise, I was connected immediately with someone from their office named Tina, who I later learned is the Operations Manager. I was in panic mode, desperately looking for someone to help care for my parents. My father has been overwhelmed trying to care for my mother, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's. From the moment Tina answered, she put me at ease. She reassured me that my concerns were common and that my frustrations were completely understandable. She patiently listened as I vented and asked countless questions. I was truly impressed by her compassion, calm demeanor, and willingness to help in any way she could. Although their services were a bit outside of our budget, Tina went above and beyond by suggesting other resources and even providing contact information along with questions to ask so I could find the right fit for my family. I hung up feeling far more confident and supported than when I first called. Visiting Angels is lucky to have such a caring and empathetic person representing their team. Tina is truly a gem, and I'm grateful for the kindness and guidance she offered during a very stressful time.

He did not call the following day. I called the day after that and was told he would return my call later that day. He did not. I called a couple more times on the following days and was told he would get back to me, but he never did. We ultimately received an email from another Visiting Angels representative but never heard back from Mr. Wheaton. After having used their services for more than 5 years, we expected and deserved better communication. It was an extremely disappointing end to our experience with them. UPDATE following Tani's reply: the review has nothing to do with taking "some time to get answers" or not getting "the answer" we had "hoped for." The negative review is because of the executive director's failure to communicate.

He really enjoys their outings and approach to memory care - it's like a resort for folks with cognitive issues. Kensington staff have made it possible for me to live my life while they handle the day-to-day care my LO needs. Dementia is not easy, on patient or family, Kensington staff, support and care have been amazing. We had falls - all were handled with careful attention to his wellness, disclosed openly and honestly with me. A couple falls meant EMT's or a hospital was necessary but no falls resulted in any significant injuries. I suspect falls for elderly, fragile, dementia patients with poor mobility are to be expected. Kensington always called to let me know what happened and made recommendations to prevent it in the future. They gave me ample opportunity to state any concerns too. I've found Kensington food is always great - fresh, tasty and as much variety as he wants. WOW, the deserts are his favorite. ;-) He loves the 'mock-tail' parties with music, dancing and singing. I have found the incentive for all community members (staff, residents and family) to participate in activities very high. I know if my LO doesn't join an event - it's his choice to have some down-time and not be 'made-to' participate. It's his life and this disease takes its toll in many areas - he isn't the person he used to be but he loves his Kensington lifestyle. Recently he told me, "while he can't remember much", he's "pretty sure that Kensington is the nicest place he's ever lived". With all the bad days dementia gives us that one little remark was my win for the year - I hold it very dear and I know that Kensington made it possible. I can't speak all aspects of the one-star review BUT perhaps their loved one needed that one-to-one additional care they are now purchasing with the cost savings at the new facility - each resident is an individual. I read their happy review of their new home and I am thrilled they found a good fit for their LO. I think the Kensington staff seem well compensated and well qualified since we experienced no real turn-over and they are always happy to work with us. However, I too "butted-heads" with some nursing staff. I would fault Kensington with failing to identify those staff members who should not interact directly with family or LO's. Working with 'raw', stressed out families (forced to watch a painful decline) is not in every staff-members toolbox no matter how eminently qualified they are for their day-to-day responsibilities. Kensington is not inexpensive but I would say they offer value. Yes, more costly than other national memory care facilities but I would say marginally more than equivalent facilities. Kensington is new, modern, their care-giver to resident ratio is very low, it's a very active lifestyle for those with cognitive issues. My LO complained often about his last facility (more about 'being in' memory care than their actual efforts). He does not complain about Kernsington or the staff which are always happy, friendly, and genuinely welcoming.

One star given for cleanliness of areas and room, and some very kind staff. This is surface level, however, as LO did not receive care consistently and staff did not have training to do most of the basics. The staff will be attentive on the surface, on day one, then vanish. Management will be all supportive if you keep your mouth shut and any updates will be sporadic, not truthful, inconsistent and sadly, non supportive. Senior leadership lacks oversight and you will be gas lighted on multiple levels. The price is sky high and you do not get what you pay for. Food is good if you order off menu vs vats of food specials. Sadly, they simply do not care much for residents as evident on multiple visits and their motto of caring for your family member like family is not factual. Avoid this place.

If you are a woman, an ILS or SLS instructor, a "protected class" minority, and if you share your managers religious beliefs, you will likely do OK at Kainos. But if you are male, do overnights, and do not share your managers religious beliefs, and are honest, you will be marginalized and oppressed. Kainos has dozens of "unwritten rules" that are NOT in the Employee Handbook-- my "mistake" was to speak the Truth and the Kainos system shi*tted me out! Do not work at Kainos. I have a 20 year full time job I cannot put on my resume thanks to Andy, who admitted to me one year later that it was a "retaliation termination"!! He should be fired for that bullsh*t. Admin staff initiate bait-and-switch meetings, so be careful if you're still working at Kainos: quit before they get petty revenge. I had NO reprimands ever, and during my last 16 years at Kainos, I had NO employee evaluations-- none! But... 20 years full time job, 4 minute termination meeting. No goodbyes to clients or co-workers. Sick. Zero accountability for admin staff. Do not work there. Just don't." - Not me. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First id like to address that whoever is impersonating me on Yelp to negatively influence the rating of an assisted living facility, that supports the developmentally disabled during a global pandemic must be a pretty unhappy person. Id like to go through your post quickly to disprove its authenticity. During my 10 years working at Kainos I never encountered any Biases, or "corruption". I was treated with respect and equality like all other employees. I have never encountered a "protected class" at Kainos, and especially not women! They often must work harder, and closer to the clients than the men do. The religious beliefs statement probably offended me the most. My Manager and I could not have been any further from each other regarding religious attitudes, yet we worked well together, she made herself available for questions, held monthly staff meetings to air any grievances, brainstorm, and often food was provided. As for the Employee handbook, It's pretty airtight, and most times I had a question for my manager the answer would be in the handbook. These unwritten rules you commented on, I think they may fall under common sense; however considering I don't know what you are referring too, ill leave it at that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On to my personal review. Kainos could not be a better program to work for. It is an assisted living located in Redwood city. The facility has ALWAYS put the needs of the clients first. They pay higher than any other assisted living facility I looked at, and the management I interacted with were all very welcoming, rational, and patient people. The previous impersonator mentioned Andy. I didn't see Andy every day, but I did interact with him every other month or so. I could not ask for a better Executive Director. He was always clear, respectful, and calm. I doubt the truthfulness of the statement," "retaliation termination" I saw first-hand the good that Kainos provided not only to its clients but to its community through fundraising, concerts in the park, fashion shows, trips to Disneyland, the list goes on. It really is a amazing nonprofit. I loved my time at kainos, and I'm fairly certain I will never be treated with as much respect, and honesty as when I was an employee. She is impeccably organized, creating a month-long calendar and schedules so that your loved one will have as few disruptions as possible - providing a consistency in which only a few caregivers are chosen for your week or month. This was a stressful time with lots of unknowns (including financially) and all we wanted was to ensure the best care for our loved one. Siteri approached my family's situation with tremendous care and calmness. Siteri introduced my family to Leba who worked with my family during my father's hospice care. Leba is absolute perfection. She helped me support my father's care with her guidance and expertise. Her guidance was paramount since I just had no idea what to do. Most importantly, residents are treated like human beings, with dignity, kindness and respect. John was also a straight shooter from the beginning, and we always felt fortunate to have found Gordon Manor. Ultimately, my dad ended up moving to another facility to be closer to family. Even during that difficult transition, the entire staff could not have been more gracious and respectful. They never once made us feel uncomfortable, and it was obvious how much the staff genuinely cared about my dad. That meant more to our family than I can express and spoke volumes about the relationships they build with their residents. Finding the right home for a loved one with memory issues can be incredibly difficult, but choosing Gordon Manor was an easy decision. I also encourage families to review their publicly available licensing records through the California Department of Social Services. When we reviewed them, the absence of complaints and citations was remarkable, and based on our experience, not surprising. Our family came to this hospice when my father was admitted for comfort care for three weeks. This…read morewas one of the most emotional and vulnerable times of our lives. There were a few nurses who were truly compassionate -- they hugged us, reassured us, and made it clear that my father's comfort mattered. Those moments meant more to us than they will ever know. However, there were also nurses whose approach felt cold and dismissive. One nurse was so blunt that he didn't even finish feeding my father because it was taking him too long to chew. In a place meant for comfort and dignity, moments like that were deeply painful to witness. The facility itself could also use more nurturing care. The environment felt in need of better cleanliness and attention, which is especially important in a setting where families are already carrying so much emotional weight. Sadly, my father passed away. I do want to acknowledge one nurse on the third floor who stood out beyond words. From my very first visit, which was incredibly emotional she assured me she would take the best care of my father, and I believed her. Her compassion, warmth, and humanity brought comfort to our family during the hardest days of our lives. I saw her again recently and couldn't help but hug her. If you are reading this, please know you are truly an angel. I only wish I had remembered your name. May God bless you with love, peace, and happiness. Hospice care should be built on patience, kindness, and dignity. I hope this facility reflects deeply on the care it provides, because families will remember these moments forever.
