Lunch only Review:…read more Wednesday 11:45a. Fried chicken- 2piece dark- could stand to be a little hotter otherwise it's fine. Pastry- too salty, not enough meat. Due to the saltiness, I couldn't enjoy it. Mashed potatoes & gravy- boxed stuff, nothing memorable. Didn't care to finish this. Hush puppies- okay Sweet tea- wayyyy tooo sweet. Service was friendly and prompt. The buffets and banana pudding only done on the weekends. Lunch was brought out to us in to go boxes, was expecting actual plates. Overall, meh. It filled a spot. Not in a rush to return.

If you're in the area definitely try a hoop cheese biscuit. You can add bacon, sausage, tenderloin, or egg. Always hot and fresh. Service is good and they get you in and out.

This was no more that 30 minutes after they told us they were open.. Can't tell you how the food is because the 4 of us didn't get served that night and haven't wasted our time to go back again. There were 3 entrees, 3 hot vegetables, 2 kinds of cole slaw, and potato salad. Each were tasty, cooked correctly. The barbecue pork was seasoned correctly for eastern NC. You must try the fried chicken, which was crispy and juicy and seasoned perfectly. The small selection lets them charge $6.99 for the Friday buffet. The Sunday buffet is $10.99, with a much larger selection. It has my full recommendation.

There was a very real risk of wasting an entire day. Thankfully, Skylight Inn delivered in a big way. First, this is the kind of place that attracts everyone: police officers, construction workers, families, businesspeople in suits, and that's just on a weekday. That's always a good sign and something I love to see. Their whole hog Eastern North Carolina barbecue was absolutely worth the effort. It was incredibly flavorful and packed with texture. The crispy skin is expertly mixed throughout the meat, alongside moist pork and just enough rendered fat to create a perfect balance. Every bite had something different going on. The sweet tea was excellent, the slaw was solid, and the picnic-style potato salad hit the spot. The cornbread, however, deserves special mention. Unlike what most people think of as cornbread today, Skylight's version is made with only stone-ground cornmeal, water, salt, and pork drippings. It's dense, chewy, and rustic. No wheat flour, no sugar, and no fluffy crumb. It may not be everyone's favorite, but it's a fascinating piece of barbecue history, and I respect that they're still making it the traditional way. I came. I saw. I ate. Then I bought three pounds to go and grabbed a T-shirt on my way out. That's about as strong an endorsement as I can give. PS.....Walking the grounds is fun as well.

The sweet tea is southern pucker sweet & perfect!! There's malt vinegar on the table for collards, and the NC vinegar based BBQ sauce was very good. However, the chopped pork BBQ did t really need any help, it was just as good on its own and not mushy. I even enjoyed the yellow coleslaw, it's a mustard & vinegar base and tasty. The Brunswick stew could have been heat hotter, but it had a decent taste with plenty of meat & veggies. Big Foot is the real deal- the only thing missing from Granville County's (perhaps the Triangle's?)…read morebest (I'd say only) purveyor of whole hog barbecue is a brick-and-mortar location, but that's not a deal-breaker for me. Big Foot makes what old timers sit around and talk about when they discuss their archetypal pig-pickin', that is to say: slow-cooked (locally-farmed) whole hog, on charcoal and wood smoke, served chopped with plenty of bark, with sides that make sense. The ribs are country-style: thick, still juicy, with a bit of snap, and with a perfect bone-to-lean ratio. They do bird, too, and do it surprisingly well. Their smoked chickens are moist and delicious, and perfect for Sunday dinner. Want a real treat? Try their smoked chicken salad on some Strong Arm focaccia one afternoon. Sauces vary to please the discerning BBQ palate, but there's nothing over-the-top. This isn't competition barbecue, it's barbecue that people line up for on Sunday afternoon, it's the kind of barbecue that people seek out when they are driving through Granville County on the way home from Virginia, because if you know, you know (and want). Kelly and team sometimes go off piste with some more creative sides, but again, they make sense, like the barbecue/collards/sometimes Mac-and-cheese egg rolls that show up in a catering spread. You should always choose their fantastic string beans (get anything green on the side, for that matter). Big Foot pops up in the Triangle, so be on the lookout- it's authentic, pork-and-smoke-forward North Carolina barbecue, a whole-hog experience that will not disappoint. Until there's a brick and mortar, you can find their next service on Instagram and Facebook.
