Wonderfully manicured and well maintained park. Great place to take a seat and relax. Admire the flowers and greenery. Relish the escape from the concretel jungle. Check out the Doughboy statue in the middle of the park. Constructed in 1836 and reconstructed in 2004 this is one of the cleanest parks I've had the pleasure to visit here. read more

The only public parks very close to my apartment are Union Square and Washington Square. I also pretty routinely walk by Madison Square Park. Acknowledging those are my baselines, it's refreshing to come across a public park in the city that isn't seething with hordes of people -- locals and tourists alike. It was such a pleasure to just sit for a spell on one of the ample benches and finish my bubble tea from Chelsea Market while enjoying the cool breeze. I fell into a reverie, lulled by the dappled light filtering through the towering shady trees that protected us from the glare of the scorching summer sun. Although Abingdon Square's located in the heart of the West Village, the sounds of the city and the traffic outside of the park just gently blend into the background. I wish we had more serene reprieves from Manhattan's hustle and bustle akin to this little oasis. read more

a small quiet oasis in a sea of Ubers and taxis is Abingdon Square. the "square" is actually a small triangular plaza of trees, flowers, other greenery, park benches, and uncluttered pathways at the intersection of Eighth Avenue & Hudson Street. the space is super-clean and designed to be friendly to the eyes. bring a book and a cup of coffee and escape the din of the rest of the city. the plaza is planted right between the Meat Packing District and the West Village so there are tons of options to grab takeout and enjoy a meal Al fresco. while spaces like this are scarce in Manhattan...they should not be overlooked for both their utility and aesthetic read more

I highly recommend this park. It's pretty safe for after 9pm, dog walkers and ppl are hanging out. Night view is very beautiful, daytime you can see the beautiful flowers. you feel relaxed in the park. Deli, supermarket, and bank are around corner :) M14A /M20 buses tuning. read more

Wow....I went from an "urban concrete" park over at Father Demo, to this gem. (even though there was a guy with his "heiney" out...walking around....it is the opposite of the concrete Jungle on 6th Ave. .... 2 avenues over, and you actually are in a bucolic setting. It's not my first time here and I've always felt similarly, but when you put into words.... this park speaks to the New Yorker that "wants to get away for a minute". That can be a tall order, but this park satisfies it in spades. Tourists can get a glimpse of what that means if they visit. read more

A small park in Greenwich Village but provides relief for resting to the public with ample seating. It is a public square but contains lots of green but very minimal shade for relief from the blazing sun. Park patrons can take a day's break from the daily grind by reading a newspaper or a book or ponder thoughts here in Abingdon Square. read more

This is a pretty little park in West Village. Has lots of tulips in the spring. There are also lots of pigeons. You'll learn here what a 'doughboy' is if you read the signs. Very quiet and calm. read more

Abingdon Square is an interesting contrast to the Bleecker Street Playground across the street. While the Bleecker Street Playground is mostly concrete and somewhat loud, Abingdon Square is more verdant and sedate. This is no criticism of the Bleecker Street Playground, which, judging from the sounds of the children, is a fun place to play. However, it is nice to have a place to just sit, sip your coffee or tea, read, and generally relax while admiring the plants and flowers. Abingdon is also very well maintained. Whoever takes care of the plants is doing a super job. Unless it has stopped recently, there is a small famers' market that sells produce and other food products over the weekend. While it's not as big as the one in Union Square, the locals can pick up some nice fruits & veggies. read more

You know, I've been holding off on reviewing parks. Part of me feels like it's a cop-out review (especially when it comes to some of the bigger parks)... I mean, it's a park. What am I going to say? I feel that any patch of grass in New York should be cherished and treasured; I may be the softest park critic to be found. But it's time for a change. I'm going to review parks. Review them hard. I'm going to review them like it's my nonexistent job. Abingdon Square Park has one review to its name. We can do better. Abingdon Square Park is a little triangle, a tiny wedge of a park, nestled between 8th Avenue, Bank, Hudson and West 12th Streets. This sliver weighs in at a miniscule .222 acres, and makes for a quaint little spot for Greenwich Village residents, homeless people, and everybody else strolling through (ex: shopping fashionistas) to sit and relax. While there's more space devoted to benches/the path, there's some greenery and in the summer it doesn't feel sparse - on a sunny day it's a pretty little thing that melds right into this darling neighborhood. I'm always amazed that Abingdon Square Park somehow remains peaceful, as it should be ridiculously noisy due to the streets that converge all around it. I first stumbled upon this little plot on a walk downtown from Chelsea to my apartment in the Financial District (it's not a bad little trek). I grabbed a sandwich at a cute little shop nearby and brought it here to eat. While eating, I remember marveling at the statue, because the patriotic dude's a badass with a pistol in his hand and an American flag swirling around him. (I did some Internet research, and apparently he's a WWI foot soldier who was commonly called a "doughboy." I can't make this stuff up.) So Abingdon Square, this is your time to shine 'cause you inspired me. You're the first park I'm reviewing and the headliner of my brand spankin' new park list, dedicated to every little patch of green I encounter on this fair isle. Cheers to the little guy. A relaxing refuge from the hustle and bustle. Come sit with the doughboy and try to spot the famous author who lives nearby. This really is an under appreciated park...as well as one of the oldest around. read more

Nice small park, with all the hustle and bustle of the dog eat dog city you can find some tranquility in this park. Mostly people walking their pets and others just reading paper books. Yes paper not E Books..Lol!!! The trash cans are shaped like old wood stoves and this adds a nice decor to this place. I like here to meditate and just rest my weary dogs. read more

Whether it was when I lived a couple of blocks away or now that I'm 15 minutes out, via PATH, I still find myself grabbing 3 deeelish cupcakes at Magnolia, sitting in this park during the springtime months and relaxing, people-watching or delving into abstruse conversation with a date. When I say "delving into abstruse conversation", I really mean "egregiously participating in unadulterated public displays of affection". We frequently change buses here late at night and I've always liked the charming look of this neighborhood, but today I was there during daylight hours (late afternoon) and had the chance to relax in this lovely park. It's a good size for a "small" park and it has lots of benches. There's also a nice statue in the middle. Considering the amount of traffic in that vicinity, the park was surprisingly peaceful. read more

Anyway, it's a tiny park, quiet enough but still close enough to the bustle of 8th avenue to realize you're clearly in Manhattan. Grab a coffee, read a book, or just sit on one of the many benches and space out pretending you're in real nature and not in a depressing semblance of green space. read more

Great park to sit down, talk, and enjoy a meal. It is also extremely nice at night. There is a children's park right next door. It is a cut through from bleecker to Hudson, but a great place to practice skateboarding or riding a bike. read more
