Some of the buildings are open to the public - some are not. We were there on a Sunday and most were not. I was happy to be on a guided walking tour with a tour guide who was knowledgeable about the university. I would highly encourage a guided tour if you have the time. This is a beautiful campus/city and there is a wealth of history attached to both the city and the university. This was definitely worth the trip from London where we were staying.

We tried to find the main campus, but struggled. Was it because we came on a Saturday? Or because we came after all the students already started summer break a few weeks ago. My wife was happy to come during the break; I prefer visiting during the school year to see the liveliness. Overall, we had a good time visiting as many of their schools, libraries, campuses, churches, etc. as possible. Was not surprised that this place was so touristy; schools make so much additional $$ giving paid tours and/or charging admissions to enter. Also, we were fortunate enough to have visited when the museum sponsored a free event for the kids, see pictures. Lastly, I took a nice local beer break in one of their libraries. So cool to be able to have a beer in a library, might be a first for me. Back in my college days, we had to go to the student union pub. Atmosphere - Beautiful, cool, and historic. Schools spread out over a few mile radius, so be prepared to walk if you want to visit. We grabbed a hop on hop off map as a guide of places to visit, see picture. Service - Good. Price - Depends on which schools tour and admission costs. A few, very few, campuses were free. Owner Comment - Great town to visit, nice break from London. I suggest visiting during the school year.

But its the relationship between Brookes and Oxford that has brought this university into the new century. By sharing teaching staff and resources, both universities have been benefiting in key areas. From a student point of view, Brookes cant be beat. Located in a great city, close to london, and 1000s upon 1000s of other students, and the most student friendly city i have ever been. Oxford Brookes is a great university with lots of opportunities. It really doesn't deserve its past…read morereputation of 'the other Oxford' and can't really be compared to Oxford University itself, as they offer lots of different subjects and frequently pool resources. Brookes is especially good for nursing, business and management and draws big names at its regular careers fairs. Some campuses are a bit out of town, but there's a great bus service that travels frequently between the campuses and town. The sports centre is open to the public and has regular classes and a good gym, as well as a popular bar. Brookes is good for its nightlife and has some good bands playing there and some great student nights, which make up for its distance from the town centre. In fact, the facilities on campus mean that students don't actually need to travel into town, although they're missing out if they don't.

The Bridge of Sighs brings many tourists. Legend says that it's so named because students have to…read morecross it in order to sit their exams; whether or not this is true is questionable - perhaps in the dim and distant past. Nowadays it's more likely to be rapturous sighs of admiration from clusters of tourists. The bridge has seen several traverses from keen climbers - the hardest method being the hand traverse. This is, of course, stricly against college regulations and CCTV cameras are now in place to prevent such mischief. Hertford itself has a reputation for being welcoming, egalitarian and down-to-earth, but still has typical Oxford architecture, a whopping great library and a lovely big dining hall. The dining hall is in a light-coloured wood and very well-lit, so it feels very welcoming whilst still retaining its grandness. Hertford's proximity to the Bodleian library makes it an excellent place to pop into for a view of a typical college whilst on the tourist trail.

Not a round the world trip this, but cheaper than paying the tuition fees. Really nice to see the imposing quadrangles and the old buildings steeped in learned history. Fun dodging the serious students scurrying to their tutorials and it's relaxing to gaze at the ornate ceiling of the ancient chapel. Make yourself at home in the Harry Potteresque dining room with the long bench tables, wood panelling and fusty straight laced portraits frowning at the young students' indiscretions. See if you can spot the shadow of Charles Dance and wonder if this is where the inspiration for the TV series began. Spicy. The gardens are spacious and very pleasant. Recommended.

The Sixth Form College Farnborough, unofficially known as Farnborough 6th, is one of the best state…read moresixth form colleges in the country. Led by college principal Dr John Guy, who is an extremely dedicated and passionate individual that is a credit to the insitution. The college itself has a number of buildings, most of them very modern, light and spacious and they are currently building a new multi storey building to house Art and Science subjects. There are several computer suites at the college, including the Dell suite and library which contains a large number of dell computers. The staff are all highly trained and passionate, giving the highest quality of A level education to students. This is reflected in their extremely high results at AS and A2. There are a number of cafés and eating areas at the college, including Café Direct which focuses on selling fair trade products, Time Out which sells hot main meals at lunch times, and Shades which is on the other side of the campus and serves a range of pasta and noodle dishes, and sandwiches. The students here are encouraged to flourish both independently within their studies and socially within the many clubs, sports and societies available. This really is a sixth form college with a university feel.

Here comes bias-city…read more Imperial College is a fantastic place to study, the faculty here are top notch, and the number of societies and amount of activities you can get involved with endless. For a university dedicated to science, technology and medicine, students here are surprisingly gifted in the arts (we've got several orchestras and choirs, as well as the main college orchestra which won the competition for the best University Orchestra in 2008) and sports. Located in South Kensington but with campuses around Hammersmith, Paddington, Chelsea and White City there's loads of things to do, and easy access to the rest of London for nights out. And the campuses themselves look great. Our union has vastly improved, and is cheap (of course) which makes up for the house prices in London. And you get to graduate in the Royal Albert Hall. Bonus. But then, like others here, I would say that!

Brunel University is well located in Uxbridge West London. The university recently went through a…read moremodernisation whereby the student union, library and other buildings through the campus have had a facelift. There has also been major construction work on producing many new student halls. The result is good and with most of the building work complete it feels like a new university. The university also closed down its other campuses in Runnymeade and Osterly to become a single campus university, this helps to build better integration. Overall the teaching on campus is pretty good and the library is well stocked. However one draw back is that Uxbridge can be pretty boring in terms of night life. But then central London is only a stones throw away, and a night bus runs from central London to Uxbridge so you can always get home!

In other words, I have no relationship with Saint Johns. It was, however, splendid to walk the grounds and visually absorb the architecture. It looks like it would be a wonderful place to study. It is after all world-renowned. If you're sightseeing, it is quite walkable to central Oxford.

I learned a lot during my summer study abroad experience, but the thing that's sticks out the most…read morein my mind, is the fact that I learned that Oxford, is not just one big university, as one might think of it in the states. It's actually a series of 39 smaller colleges, each with their own separate campuses and facilities and educational specialties -- one of those colleges being named St. Johns. But let's be honest here, you don't really want to tell new acquaintances and potential employers that you studied at St. John's College for the summer, you want the reaction you get from telling them you studied at Oxford. And therefore, the misconception continues... I had a great time studying here, although I won't comment too much on the curriculum or teachers, since I was a part of specialized summer program. However, the grounds were well kept and immaculate. The architecture was historic and gorgeous...and the dorm rooms were crazy big. At least mine was...I had so much damn space in that room, it was like I had a studio apartment all to myself. There's a pub on campus, that's pretty spacious and well stocked, and there's a few kebab vans on the street near campus that serve late night greasy stuff, including the very popular cheesy chips (i.e. fries). 1am food for drunkards....UK style.
