I imagine this is a fantastic place to visit on school trips in the summer months…read more Having an interest in ecology and all things green we decided to take a trip in November. The water train doesnt work in the winter months and there are no guided tours but you can use a handheld device which will talk you through the exhibits. It is about £6.40 for an adult and a 'suggested donation' of another £1 to loan the tour guide. Many of the exhibits did not work, a large part of the centre was roped off and another part is under construction. However, despite the downsides, it was an interesting project that looked at all aspects of ecology and preservation. The games for the children were great - all with an aim to get them thinking about their fuel consumption, travel issues, waste management etc. Even the restaurant was vegetarian and explained how it is environmentally beneficial to live a vegetarian lifestyle. The centre is run by volunteers who live and work on site and you can tell it is a way of life that they really enjoy. The shop was delightful with a range of gadgets for the eco minded, plenty of interesting books and many fairtrade gifts on offer. I enjoyed seeing how they educate our youngsters in these important matters but some parts of the centre was a little disappointing, especially having to pay full rates when much of the centre was off limits but at least the entry fee etc went to a good cause.

Nestled on a hillside, CAT is a top eco-centre, exploring alternative ways to live in a greener way. It is set out as an educational centre with lots of examples of the various eco-technologies they encourage. The centre is very well laid out and the ethics good, however i would suggest trying to visit on a sunny day we took an large group of kids who got bored early on because many of the working exhibits weren't going becuase they relied on solar power. The water lift was great though and everyone enjoyed using it to get up to the centre.

I highly recommended them especially for the students since I considered them honest and trustworthy. Thank you for everything Philips Evans .

Thanks to the Ordnance Survey maps, walking your way all over the United Kingdom is pretty easy…read more These maps are so intricately detailed that they manage to capture every last church with a steeple as well as every pub in even the most far flung reaches of Great Britain. After walking around Wales (shout out to Sugar Loaf Mountain!), we were in our cottage one night and turned on the telly to find a program on about the Centre For Alternative Technology. The next day we hopped in our Ford Festiva and made our way there, not realizing how tiny many of the roads we'd need to take were and how much that would add to the total trip. Three hours into a trip we thought would take half that, we arrived at the Centre For Alternative Technology (CAT) which is built on a former slate quarry. True to their mission, "CAT aims to 'inspire, inform, and enable' people to live more sustainably" through education on and demonstration of solar, wind and hydro power as well as organic agriculture and even alternative sewage systems through compost toilets! There's lots to see and do here for kids and adults alike, from swinging on the eco adventure playground to guided tours with knowledgeable environmentalists. Don't miss the gift shop which has an impressive selection of green books (purported to be the largest of its kind in the UK) and even unique accessories like the Celtic knot ring I picked up here.

I little difficult if you want to spend some time there. When you arrive you can take the water lift / railway to the top where everything is. Everwhere is well signposted. I got the impression that it had been designed for visitors but now it has been taken over by Academics. All the visitors appeared to be students, teachers or on a course. The different areas dont appear to have been updated for some time. Some have not really had time spent on them since being put together. The food was good in the cafe, however tables were occupied by students using the area as desks. Yes worth a visit but didnt feel I want to become a member. Think I would see the same next time I went.
