Just outside the small town of Abergonolwyn, a few miles beyond beautiful Tal y Llyn (lake at the south of Snowdonia National Park), lies Castell y Bere. Ruins of a castle built by the Welsh Prince, Llewellyn the Great, to protect the mountain pass it looks out west towards the sea, past impressive Bird Rock. The broken down castle is a lovely place to visit and take in the surrounds. Its life in the 1200s was short-lived, since the English eventually came and marauded, as they tended to do, but now it's home to sheep and the occasional walker. Another little gem of the Welsh countryside that's by far best to get to by bicycle. read more
