Last week I made a passing visit through Palmerston North, and not knowing what places are good to eat for dinner, I delegated this role to a new friend of mine, who booked a table at Aberdeen as accordingly to her, they do really good steak's and it is the best restaurant for miles.
We made our booking for 6pm, but turned at 5:30 for a drink before hand, and while I initially felt a bit weird seeing the place completely empty this forgotten pretty quick as within the hour the place was packed out, I couldn't see a single table spare. A good sign if all the locals come here.
The staff here are very friendly and equally skilled in their roles, our waitress rattled off the daily specials without any problems and answered all our questions we had. Even when we kept asking for additional time before we made our choices did not seem to phase her.
After our orders of Gralic Bread, Angus Prime Steak 300Grams with red wine potato mash (bit out there but I'll go with it), and some garlic mushrooms. We were surprised to be given a complimentary taste of Ginger Bread with melted blue cheese! A very unique food match, and to be quite honest I thought although very strange combination it actually tasted quite nice. Which is saying something because i'm not a huge fan on blue cheese!
From the time we made our order to receiving it was just under 40 minutes with a full house guest.. quite a well oiled operation here for the Chef & the team to pull of this high level of service. When our steaks arrived I was visually impressed by the presentation of the steak & mentioned to my friend, that this is almost as good if not better than what I have experienced in Auckland and it was awesome to see little old Palmy (not so little as I was told as the population is around 80,000!) produce such a good plate of food.
The only thing I could possibly comment on the food here is the red wine mash... looks like beetroot stained potato mash.. and neither my self or my friend could taste any red wine here or anything for that matter. The sauces provided made up for this & although it does look weird, it did not stop us from eating it all.
The Garlic mushrooms were great, you got that mushroom taste with a hint of garlic that wasn't too over powering. My friend did comment that she would have liked 100x more garlic, but that's purely because she is garlic mad!
Lastly after all that, I was feeling full but as always my one weakness on the desert menu is Creme Brule.. I just love the stuff and always if a place is offering this on their menu, I will no doubt order it. The brule here was great.. nice crunchy brule and an equally smooth vanilla creme with a sweet after taste.
Overall my self & my friend were very pleased with our choices & the high level of service with a great atmosphere of people made this a highlight of my visit to this town. I will have this place written down on my black list for places to visit when passing through.. hopefully sometime soon!
I have marked them the following;
Food 4/5 - Presentation was spot on.
Service 5/5 - Highest Rating possible - even with a full house, there were no delays and the staff were great.
Price - 4/5 Total Bill for 2 starters, 2 Mains, 2 Deserts & 2 Glasses of wine came to $120.00 - Which is pretty good in comparison to other venues.
Atmosphere - 4/5
