There's a growing trend of places in Rusholme creating a new niche for themselves. It's kind of a take-away/Restaurant hybrid phenomenon. The seating area very much looks like a restaurant, but the front of house still very much resembles a take-away, and it is. Whilst I myself can't bring myself round to seeing it as a restaurant, it's too noisy and the prices don't suggest it. The reality is it's packed with people that do treat it as such. The latest Golf advert on TV (The parachute one) emphasises the idea "You get what you pay for". As a Mancunian foodie I'd strongly testify against that philosophy. Rusholme is littered with places that serve exceptional food at ordinary prices. In contrast I've also paid extortionate prices for below average food in the city centre. The service might not be the best at Kebabish but the food certainly is of high quality. The lamb chops, marinated in a secret spicy sauce and grilled fresh are the best I've tried anywhere for a long time. One of the things you might have to get used to if you haven't been is the lack of, how shall I put this... hmmm let's say it's the equivalent of a Doctor having dreadful bedside manner. If you're expecting an Americanized fake teethy "Hello there how may I help you" approach, it ain't gonna happen. You'll get a very serious, busy and efficient glare the kind you encounter at your driving test perhaps. None the less as I said the quality of the food will more than make up for it. Al Quds and Jaffa have their healthy competition back for my custom and that's not a bad thing at all.

I'll won't exactly be hurrying but I would definitely go back to Kebabish on Hilton Street for some…read moreTurkish and vegetarian grub. You can't really argue with good food and good prices, can you? The restaurant is halal and barbeque style, you can eat in or take away depending on your mood/ the night plus there really is enough here to satisfy vegetarian friends. Great variety but the baby chicken is always a favourite and the mixed meat plate is good too.

Fancy Al Quds tonight he said as we ransacked the fridge at our student house. The rest as they say is history. Since then I have been coming to this humble abode for a kobeda, for what is it now 11 years? How time flies. Every now and then I get the craving and I return for that perfectly baked longitudanal tandoori naan (the size of my forearm) blanketing a juicy Kobeda. The set up is simple, they have a fridge with freshly prepared, perfectly marinated meaty skewers of various varieties. You go in, you point at one and 4 minutes later you can enjoy the best meat in Rusholme. Now if I have previously I don't remember but I recently tried the chicken tikka recently. And low and behold it was one of those rare "Holy moly batman" foodie moments. The sauce they marinated the chicken with was close to perfection, the chicken was tender and cooked with expert timing. It was a thing of beauty, the memory of which still lingers, enticing me back into its delicious arms once again. I have thus far resisted, I'm reserving it for specific moments. Namely special celebratory occasions and those morale boosting occasions when life hasn't been nice. I'm fairly certain I'll be returning when neither are relevant and I just happen to be driving past it. I may even knock myself out cold with food coma by ordering a Kobeda/Chick tikka mix *gulp*. It could be my manvfood moment. Admittedly I don't think I'm that way inclined. Because if it was gonna happen it would've already. It's been on the menu for 11 years. No seriously go check it out if you are a carnivore. Word of warning though, your first Kobeda experience will leave all your hunger concerns dealt with for 24 hours at least. So if you plan on eating three meals a day the next day, take a rain check.

For main I ordered a chicken schwarma kebab - this was one of the best I've had in England... Excellently spiced with super flavour. My friend had a chicken kebab which looked pretty good. A plus is they automatically send kebabs with separate salad and sauce - great as you don't end up with soggy bread! Will definitely try out the sit in when I'm next on wilmslow Road.

Normally these sites tend to agree with each other, so when I saw that Tripadvisor said Sangams was the best Indian restaurant in Manchester, I was intrigued to say the least. I had to check this out! I popped in to try their lunch menu (£7 for poppadoms, a rice or naan, and a curry). To my substantial surprise Sangams was outstanding. I had assumed that their lunch food would not be their best stuff, but wow! And if I was right, double wow! It was impressive from the start, the poppadoms were freshly cooked and actually tasted cooked not reheated, they even had areas where they had browned a little. The portion of rice was huge (enough for safely two people) and tasted pretty good and the curry was great. Another huge portion (frankly, almost enough for two again!) and had seriously good quality meat in it. The meat actually had some substance to it and for once I felt like I was eating some proper cooking. There was plenty of meat too, which is an area the mile often lets you down in. All this for £7, and at a lunchtime when the restaurants rarely aim to impress. What does this tell us? 1. The mile does have some surprises left 2. Sangams may not be the best in the city, but it's a lot closer than you think 3. Yelp has the very very very rare blind spot Seriously people, check it out, and be shocked and awed. (By the way, the decor is much lighter and nicer than the outside looks)
