An older man, presumably his manager, took over and tried to up-sell us. I was accompanied by my husband and son but I had done the research and knew what they had in stock. I told the older man that he would not be able to up-sell us because we had $600 to spend and no more. He continued and said he wasn't trying to sell us by showing us more expensive mattresses, he was trying to "educate us". I told him we had already made a decision. He then started throwing zingers at myself and my husband about "who controlled the money" and who was "the boss" and who held the "purse strings". My husband walked away and requested our first salesman to check other nearby stores for the mattress we wanted. He located one and we made arrangements for delivery but the older man never stopped making sexist comments such as "$600 and not a penny more", even while we were paying for the mattress. If you do decide to go to that store, be prepared for an older, sexist, "gentleman of color" to let you know he doesn't appreciate being "shut down by a woman". The mattress is lovely but we will never go back to that store.

When we opened it we discovered it had been used (coffee stains on the inside and outside of the metal carafe) and the instructions were missing. The box did not look as if it had been resealed or marked as a Return. (I also am confident the giver of the gift didn't test drive the coffee maker before handing it over to us.) Someone bought it, used it, didn't like it, made no attempt to clean it, returned it, and the store put it back on the shelf without checking the contents. We returned it to the Battle Creek store, with intent to exchange it for the same model, but not a used one this time. The Kalamazoo store did not carry this model. The exchange went smoothly. The clerk was aghast that someone hadn't examined the contents of the return earlier, claiming that it was policy to do so. And that would certainly be a sensible policy. But we noticed the clerk didn't check the first box before we left the store. We, on the other hand, before leaving, opened the second box to make certain everything was there (e.g., instructions were present, the coffee maker was sealed in plastic wrap).
