When we opened it we discovered it had been used (coffee stains on the inside and outside of the metal carafe) and the instructions were missing. The box did not look as if it had been resealed or marked as a Return. (I also am confident the giver of the gift didn't test drive the coffee maker before handing it over to us.) We returned it to the Battle Creek store, with intent to exchange it for the same model, but not a used one this time. The Kalamazoo store did not carry this model. The exchange went smoothly. The clerk was aghast that someone hadn't examined the contents of the return earlier, claiming that it was policy to do so. And that would certainly be a sensible policy. But we noticed the clerk didn't check the first box before we left the store. We, on the other hand, before leaving, opened the second box to make certain everything was there (e.g., instructions were present, the coffee maker was sealed in plastic wrap). read more
