It seems like all the greenhouses are doing their clearance sales early this year, and Garden Spot is no exception. I was thrilled to find some two-foot-tall, already flowering seranno pepper plants for only $6.50 (and even better ... The bottom of the planter has four different mature herb plants -- parsley, basil, sage, and dill). Holy bang for your buck! Get there quick before they're gone.

I wasn't sure if the company was still making the material. I spoke w a woman named Lexi. She said she would get back w me. I called again with the square footage of my room and left the information with the woman who answered the phone. I didn't hear back that week and called again on October 23. I was told that the info was in Lexi's email and that Lexi was "on a well deserved vacation" and was off for her sons birthday. I asked when I should call back. The woman told me "like I said Monday the 31st" (FYI..she never said a date. Just said she was off). I called yesterday, November 3, giving Lexi some time to catch up after her vacation. She answered the phone and asked what I needed. So I went through the whole story. She told me she left me a voicemail (if she did, she left it on wrong number, I have no history of a missed call or of a voicemail from her). She told me the material is discontinued. I asked for the name of my product. She didn't want to look it up. But finally did. And I asked her for the company's phone number (I figured they might know where else I could get something like this or mill it for me...because she suggested they may), she said "you can Google it". I said, no, you can give it to me....she hung up on me. I did call back to talk to a manager and was sent to their normal voicemail. It was approximately 8k worth of hard wood that apparently she didn't want to sell me for some reason. I called the manufacturer and was told that in fact this was not discontinued, they re-mill it all of the time and that they have 8,000 square feet in their warehouse. I called 2 other vendors to check prices and "miracle" they found it and quoted me on the phone right then. So run away from this place. Do not use them.

Their season end sale is going on right now (20 percent off everything), and they're down to using…read moreabout 50 percent of their space. Most of what remains are smaller veggies and herbs and the smaller flowers designed for putting together your own planters (as opposed to the larger prefilled planters and hanging baskets we love to grab earlier in the season). They plan to have their last day of the season next Saturday, so if you've got some spots to fill in your garden, now's the time.

Definitely a day-maker! I've got admit I was nervous to see this pop up on our credit card statement, since it had about five birds of paradise and three gigantic gerbera daisies (truly the most vibrant and gigantic blooms I've seen -- they reminded me of prima ballerina tutus that were perfectly starched!) I would have expected that these eight stems alone, let alone any filler, would run a pretty penny. But when I glanced at our credit card statement, it was under $30. I can't tell you how many times I see people post photos of bouquets on Yelp and say how disappointed they are with what they got for the amount they paid (NOT at this particular business, just in general). The spot really bring the wow factor for a very affordable price in my opinion. That said, my husband probably picked out each bloom by himself and knows exactly what I like -- but the fact that they have flowers this lovely and don't charge an arm and a leg for them is definitely good info to have. There really are quite a few fabulous businesses and this particular stretch of Portage Road by West and Austin lakes -- I highly recommend checking out Polderman's, Trove, and West Lake pharmacy/gift shop If you're in this neck of the woods visiting Presidential Brewing, The Cove, or Latitude 42.

My favorite greenhouse on the north side of Kalamazoo!!!…read more We stumbled on the Gernaat Greenhouse while shopping at the Kalamazoo Farmers Market since they have a stand (currently) on the west side of the pavilion. They offer a wide range of veggies for your garden. The prices are very reasonable and usually cheaper then their competitors. They also offer lots of flower options and in my opinion they have the most beautiful geraniums in West Michigan!! If you're in the area stop in check out!
