Cedar Manor Hotel is the cutest stay in the Ambleside area. 10/10 recommend, and we really hope to…read morereturn for a longer stay next time! It's a great location, just up the road from Ambleside. The Inn is quaint, charming, and comfortable and the staff are kind, welcoming and accommodating! We arrived and were immediately happy with the safe and private parking accommodations. We actually arrived very late that evening, and called ahead, they waited up for us and were so kind upon arrival. The Hotel is SO charming, cute and cozy. The aesthetic is charming English cottage, while also being updated and feeling clean. The hotel rooms themselves are more modern (though unique) to give you all of the comforts of home - my fave being the towel warmer. Our room was wonderfully clean (and I'm a stickler on cleanliness!) and the bed was so comfortable, especially after a long drive. It was such a comfortable and clean place to lay our heads for the evening. The hotel has a restaurant that I would also recommend. Breakfast was incredible - one of the first hotel breakfasts where I haven't had to douse in pepper haha. Well seasoned and well cooked, high quality ingredients. Jonathan is a wonderful chef. My husband said the hollandaise was one of the best he's ever had. I'd recommend stopping by for sure, and don't miss breakfast! The hotel is also very unique in that they have local goods/art around the hotel, both as decor and for sale. Such a sweet touch. We bought one of Caroline's paintings - she's multi talented! Overall, I would stay here again. 10/10!!

It's quite a busy little spot at times as there are boat moorings and a marina holiday home development virtually on its doorstep and also caravan parks nearby. The pub has a relaxed atmosphere and a reasonable choice of beers and lagers including Black Sheep beer and Peroni lager to name a couple. There is a pool table and fruit machine and basically it has the vibe of a typical traditional English pub. You can dine in the pub area or, alternatively, in the restaurant which is decorated in lighter colours and has more of a feeling of a special occasion about it. On the most recent occasion we visited it was a specials on pizza and pasta night and we both opted for pizza. It was fine but nothing out of the ordinary really, my pepperoni pizza was quite bland and I prefer a thinner base but then that is just personal choice. On previous occasions we have tried various dishes including steaks, fish & chips, sausage and mash, chicken, gammon etc. and we have generally been pretty pleased with the food. Service can be slow even at quiet times and my request for a dessert menu on our last visit was being directed to look at a counter with some desserts in it, I wasn't very impressed by that and wasn't going to bother but fortunately another member of the waiting staff appeared and told me what was available. I opted for the Eton Mess which was pleasant enough. I'd say the prices were just above average for the area, taking these Two for One venues out of the equation, though the steak which was on the specials board came in at a hefty £18.95 when we were there. Starters too are a bit on the pricey side. Overall though we really like the place and will very definitely return in the future on many occasions!

This is the worst hotel I ever came across travelling around the world for the past 15 years. My…read moretrain got cancelled, I informed them that I would come on the next day, which was already prepayed. What these petty crooks did is took advantage of my train cancellation - charged me the no show fee for the whole period of stay and cancelled my booking. When I arrived the next day they said my reservation is not valid anymore, and I have to pay for the next night again. Even if this policy allows that, the behaviour of the hotel was dishonest and unethical, basically, they behaved like thieves. Avoid by all means! Especially since train cancellations are frequent in the UK. None of the other hotels behaved like that, in most cases I received the full refund. There are many much better hotels in Kendal.

My room had the most spectacular views out over the river too. The bed was huge and was like sleeping on clouds ... It was incredibly comfortable and I had the best sleep I've had in ages. The bathroom was rrally nuce although the toilet is a little weird, almost like a children's toilet but hey it does the job. The bath was luxurious too though for some reason I couldn't get cold water to come out as hard as I tried it just flooded out boiling water. That's probably just me not knowing which way to turn the tap though. There is a leisure centre with a gym, swimming pool, sauna, spa and steam room that is open to guests so don't forget your swimmers (like I did). Reception staff were friendly and welcoming. I'd forgotten my toothbrush but they handily had bathroom essentials for purchase. The restaurant is very nice with plenty of options. I only had the chips as I have a lot of food allergies but the chips were delicious. Chunky and crunchy. The only thing I didn't appreciate was house keeping entering the room at 9 am when I was still asleep. They should probably wait until people have checked out, or at least until later in the morning. Overall, I had a great stay and I'd happily return.

First thing we noticed was how narrow the parking spaces are! With a car parked either side of us we could hardly open the doors and had to squeeze out of the car. Welcome not particularly welcoming. The lady who greeted us did not give her name. She spoke in a peculiar half-whisper and was quite gloomy. We did not feel welcome and were a bit unnerved. We were shown to our room the Kirkhead. This is billed as a superior double and the website describes it as having a settee. I would hate to see a basic double if this is a superior! The bed is a double bed but seemed quite narrow. The room did not have a settee. The room is long and the ceiling high but it is quite a narrow room now they've put up a stud wall and fitted a bathroom. The wardrobe was very small for a couple: we were unable to hang up all our clothes for the weekend and had to fold some tops/trousers. My partner is tall and he noticed dust on all the high surfaces: tops of mirror, tv that made us cheekily run our finges across the top of the door frames and we found heavy dust there. The hairdryer was not working properly: it would only blow air if I kept my thumb pressed hard to a button on the front of it. As a result it was uncomfortable and no good for styling hair. The furnishings could best be described as pleasant there is nothing plush about this room and it certainly wasn't conducive to a romantic getaway. The room was rather hot and stifling. I tried leaving the window open but had to get up and close it at 2am on the first night because of the noise from the terrace directly below our window. The bathroom was cramped. When we had a bath we realised the bath is not just shorter than average, it is also shallower. Also, we could see the stud wall at the bottom corner of the bath where it had not been properly fitted. And the hot tap on the sink is loose. A major flaw is that the floor is NOT non-slip! We had a couple of hairy moments after bath/shower when we both slid on the wet floor. Oh, and the bathroom door sticks after a shower/bath and was pretty hard to wrench open. The soap/shampoo/conditioner provided is a sort of all-in-one that smelled really quite masuline. I'd advise bringing your own. The overall impression is just of a place that had grand aspirations but neither the budget nor the will to live up to them. Food: we did not eat in the restaurant. My partner found the menu limited (4 selections for each course) and not particularly inspired. We did eat in the bar now this is a plus point. The bar is large, brightly lit with several areas to sit and eat/drink. The staff were cheerful and welcoming (which was something of a relief!) and the food/drink arrived quickly. Food portions here are generous and the burger/sandwich were both tasty (one minor quibble; my sandwich came with avocado. This was mashed to a paste and had turned that rather brownish green one gets when avocado is cut and then left). I can definitely reccomend the cocktails and the ice creams! Breakfast: the continental part of the breakfast was excellent: a good range of fruits (fresh, tinned and a mixed berry compote), yogurt, several different cereals, milk, danish pastries & croissants and 4 different fresh fruit juices. Had we just had this, we'd have been very happy indeed. Unfortunately my husband chose instead to have the Full English breakfast. This seemed peculiarly stingy especially given the portions of the food served in the bar the previous evening. He got one sausage (texture: very dense. Not come across that before except in ones that have been cooked from frozen), ONE mushroom, ONE HALF of a tomato. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the HALF potato cake he got was not made in the kitchen there was a distinct impression of shop-bought. Lounge; comfortable, although a little cramped. The hotel brochure says that games are available in the lounge. Unfortunately the night we were there the games were all in the corner of the restaurant and we were told they would be unavaiable until after the restaurant was clear. Now, in the Lakes it rains a LOT and there is quite a necessity for things to do in bad weather. To have all the board games unavailable was just another half-thought out aspect of our stay. To sum up: This is not a hotel. It is a B&B. I don't know how it got 4 stars: I'd have thought 3 was pretty generous, based on the welcome and the room. It (or at least the room we stayed in) was not good for a romantic weekend. We were left feeling deflated and left very early on the morning of our 2nd night. Despite the website saying you can check out any time after 7am we were unable to find anyone for checkout, nobody answered the bell (rung twice) and in the end I left a note and the key on the stand in the entrance hall. We were glad to get away.

At first all was ok with the exception that the so called double bed was about 2/3rds normal size which was strange. But then the fun and games started when the staff at the party did not appear to know how to make a drink or pour a pint. They ran out of glassware and stock and seemed all at sea behind the bar. At 11-00pm they suddenly closed the bar 2 hours ahead of schedule saying there was an IT glitch and they could not use the till which was a blatant lie. My brother had paid £1000 for the hire of the room and the bar extension until 1-00am. the hotel rooms were mostly booked out by guests attending the party as well. When challenged about the so called IT glitch they became defensive and surly and were threatening and abusive asking guests to leave the party room. One of the staff even asked me my name and when I enquired why he needed it and he heard a friend use my 1st name he said its ok I will just check the hotel register for your details which I took to be a threat that something more sinister was going to happen. Due to the complete breakdown of service all the guests were left with nowhere to go but to their rooms like naughty children. The stunning ignorance and complete lack of training, knowledge or even basic courtesy was beyond anything I have ever experienced in a hotel before and it made Fawlty Towers look like Claridge's. I contacted the General Manager Fred via email and initially he was apologetic and he agreed that the staff had lied about the reason for closing the bar and should not have done so but when I wouldn't accept his offer of a 2 night stay in the hotel and had the temerity to suggest that he might consider a partial or full refund for our disastrous stay he stopped communicating with me which suggests the staff behaviour is led from the top down. At breakfast the next morning the assistant manageress who we had spoken with the night before was ignorant and had a terrible sour face on her so much so that we could not trust her not to interfere with our breakfast and we just had coffee from the machine. I cannot recommend this hotel LOWLY enough and all I can say is if you do stay here then on your own head be it. It gets 1 star because that is the lowest I can award.

Bathroom very nice and sort of (Brit-standard 'modern') modern. Breakfast room quite fancy. Continental or cooked breakfast - I had the cereals, toast, juice'n coffee type: v.g. as expected. Staff lurks in kitchen, shoots out now and then to check on customers. Added later: been thinking about the rug salesman who'd rented the room next to the reception, downstairs. Seems to me I saw his trestle sign outside on the sloping street a few years ago. Spoke to him, as people walked past the wine bar opposite. Man must be a traveling salesman, does the tour of the country, a few days here, a few there. With his rugs. Needs some logistics for those, mind you. Spoke to him as I waited for wife+daughter to walk down from station. They stayed with Grannie in Carnforth, down the line, in her small home, and rode train up each morning, fresh and pink-faced from the bracing, moist, Lancashire air. He was friendly, knew how to speak to strangers. Easy fellow. A few customers'd walk in, look at the Persian rugs, and leave. Almost as if the rugs were a cover for something else? I paged the newspaper, waiting. 'So, from Denmark, are you?' he'd pleasantly continue when the people'd left. Waterstones next door. Upstairs balcony display area not bad, chair to snooze in, wait for family. Thumb books. Hotel has fancy bar/parlor upstairs. Dark, not bad for someone with iPad or laptop in need for some screen-time. Plugs, but bring that adaptor! Oh, the plugs . Hrm. When I plugged in the iPad adapter interesting sparking-type sounds cane from the socket. Should it do that?
