During the quote process they told us what they thought we wanted to hear which completely changed the scope of our project right after digging the first pits. Then at the end of it the work was not up to code and failed inspection. Finally, when we had leaks the following year, they wanted us to cut out the walls of our finished basement before any other diagnostic or work would be done. If we wanted to go that route we would have used a company that repairs foundations from the interior, which would have been cheaper anyway. Our main issues and the company's way of addressing them were: - Project changes were not communicated from head office to the workers and part of our walkway was wrongly destroyed - Shield did not charge us for the digging but did no patching to fix the damage - We requested they let us know when they would be doing interior work, they gave no warning - General apology - No poly was hung and no dust mitigation was used for the first day of indoor jackhammering in our finished basement - General apology - Ignored our input regarding the location of the sump, causing them to jackhammer a main branch of our furnace duct - General apology - Did not measure interior vs exterior distances correctly when drilling the foundation for the sump outlet - General apology - When poly was finally hung they completely blocked off the door to our bedroom unnecessarily - General apology - Blocked our garage/driveway without communication when there was plenty of street parking available, did not move even after we asked them multiple times - General apology each time the issue was raised - Wood access hatch was used even though the quote stated metal would be used - They eventually replaced it after much back-and-forth - Workers used the side of our house (front yard, right beside a window) as a urinal - Lack of accountability, general non-apology, statement of "working on a site is hard" - Worker special needs were vaguely blamed but no accountability or desire to improve was expressed by the supervisor. Sloughed off as "just a one-off" and every apology was followed by a "but" - Sump was not connected or tested before the workers left - Workers returned and addressed these concerns - Sump was not installed according to code, had no ticketed plumber attached to the work, and could not be permitted. Lid was not airtight and outlet was missing the required check valve - It took multiple calls and conversations with Shield, including the owner, wherein we were given completely false information and told that retrofits don't need to meet code requirements, before they finally brought it up to code - Work was completed in the fall of 2025 and the "Spring Top-up" where they backfill holes that have settled did not begin until September 2026 - It took months of emails before they finally came. Staff constantly blamed being overwhelmed due to the record rainfall, but no one is forcing them to take on so much new work that they overwhelm their staff and force their other projects suffer. Shield, if you're reading this, do better.

We had a quote from another vendor that was quite a bit cheaper, but what we heard about how they planned to deal with the long wall situation basically sounded like a cosmetic coverup and not really a fix. I remembered that our neighbour had used J and J years ago before selling their home, and their work still looked great there. J and J gave us an estimate that was within our guesstimate frame, told us in detail about how they would fix the wall, showed up reliably, and completed the work in a much faster time frame than I would have thought. Multiple people were on the job the first day, and they had to come back a second day to follow up on finishing the beastly wall, and were delayed by some serious rain, but there was no worry waiting because the site was already weather safe, with the follow up work being mostly cosmetic. The outcome has been very satisfying after years of seeing things slowly crumble. I enjoy being out in the garden without having to try and not look at certain places. In short, it looks seamless and took years off the curb appeal of our home. These folks really are the experts at this in Edmonton, and I would highly recommend them and definitely use them again.

Not only was the quotation reasonable but along with the quote we received a packet filled with information of what a property owner should consider when hiring a foundation company from all of the questions that need to be asked to the references that need to be checked. The extraordinary professionalism from Kevin and his team was beyond what we had expected. The crew came in and treated our property as if it was their own. They took great care to cover the lawn so as not to damage it with their machinery. They excavated the entire side of the apartment building down to the foundation floor and every step of the repair was completed properly (we received a detailed step by step manifest of the work to be done). The job was finished in two days and they cleaned up everything so thoroughly that you would never even know they were there. Every single member of the crew was exceptionally polite and respectful. I visited the site often and every one of them was fantastically knowledgable about what they were doing not to mention very patient with me and willing to answer all of my questions (and I had many!). Based on their good reviews (which I now…read morerealize are mainly from years ago), I waited a month or so for them to give me an opinion about how to keep water from getting into my basement bedroom. I was out of town and arranged for someone to meet them at my house to let them in. I had asked that they call me when they were at my house so I could explain the history of the problem, which was complex. When Kevin went to my house, he did not bother to call me. Without knowing the extensive troubleshooting I had done in the preceding 2 months, he told the person who met him at my house that it was not a foundation problem and left it at that. When I left repeated messages requesting an explanation, he did not call back. Instead, he sent a 2-sentence email that explained nothing and stated rudely that it was not his responsibility to inform me about his assessment. I can only assume he did not view the work needed on my house as worth his while. When I tried to explain why I wanted to know how he reached his conclusion, he sent me another rude email saying he was done communicating with me. When I posted a negative review on Google, he replied in writing with insults, claiming that I had not treated him well, and that I had no business writing a review because he did not want me as a client. He implied that I had unreasonable expectations at a time when his business was booming due to heavy rainfalls, expressing no empathy for me as a homeowner seeking help to manage distressing consequences of the heavy rainfalls.

Cracked Wall Construction, a Better Business Bureau A+ company, has so much business by…read morerecommendation that I almost didn't write this review. The owner, Keith, doesn't need the business, but since I like reading reviews on Yelp, I decided to add a note about Cracked Wall Construction. Sometimes you've just gotta tell the world about stuff. Keith is one of those fabulous guys that I can't shut up about. So here goes: Keith, the Cracked Wall Construction company owner, is an incredibly hard-working, dependable guy. He has so much work that he sometimes can't call everybody back, but if he does agree to take on your job, he will show up on time and get the job done on schedule and on budget. He does exterior foundation repairs by digging about two or three feet either side of the crack all the way down to the bottom of the foundation. Then he chips out the crack so that it will take a sealant, tars it, adds a blue membrane liner, adds an insulating thingy and probably a bunch of other stuff, too, that I don't know about. What I do know is that a crack that poured out water at about the rate of a wimpy hose or a strong drinking fountain is now completely dry. He also put up some plywood for us so that the crack would be protected during a particularly heavy rain because he was working on some other jobs and was committed to finishing those before he could start on our job. He charged $1000 to fix this crack, and pointed out some other cracks that I might want to fix, but I stupidly decided to wait and see if the cracks opened up. Sure enough, a year later, with the winter freeze and thaw this spring, those cracks opened up. Naturally, I called Keith, knowing he would fix it right at a good price. This time, we found an old sidewalk under the deck that was directing water toward the crack. Keith jackhammered the old sidewalk out and disposed of it for us. He does things right. Keith keeps a nice neat worksite, worked quickly and carefully, and got the job done mostly while my husband and I were at work. He does all of the excavation by hand digging, so your yard won't be destroyed by heavy equipment. Keith guarantees his work and says he has never had to go back to fix a crack he repaired. I feel blessed to have found Keith.
