I went to have my taxes done here in June after tax season was over a few years ago. Taxes always…read moregive me anxiety and I don't think I'm the only one! Lol. I was going through a transitional time in my life and had a few questions regarding taking clinical classes out of state to further my profession. The classes were over $10,000 and I wanted to know if and how it would impact my taxes. The older white male employee who was going to do my taxes seemed highly irritated at my questions and also suspicious. I admit I was not dressed professionally and had probably just got out of my garden, but I'm paying him, so I wasn't concerned. I've got no shame in my game and was multitasking that day. He went on to ask me about my son who had turned 18 that prior year and if he was in college. Currently he wasn't in college. But, he had went to community college for 1 semester the year prior and decided it wasn't for him. The mans reaction was so offensive, rolling his eyes and shaking his head and asking me if I had proof. Since my son was already 18 and he's my first child I had no idea I needed to take his documents. I told him I could get the info and return if it was necessary, but questioned why it would be necessary since I wasn't claiming my son. I honestly wasn't as concerned with 1 term of community college as I was about my expensive 10,000 clinical. My son was working and doing his own taxes anyway. From this jerks reaction I flat out asked him, "Do you think I'm lying?!!!!". He said, YES! I was SO INSULTED!!!!! Who has such low opinions of people that they question 1 term of community college with such contempt! Absurd behavior. I highly doubt he would have treated another man this way. Needless to say I left at once. This mans behavior was strange and classless. Beware of him. I had my taxes prepared here a year before this episode that was adequate. But, the chance of ever encountering this jerk again no way! I'd rather have a root canal.

He knew the specifics of how to handle my educational forms and deductions (along with a retirement account problem that I bungled in a previous return). Sean capably prepared my personal return, which was a relief, because as a PhD student, the tuition/fellowship/scholarship/stipend/grant classifications are confusing. Doing it wrong could cost you. If you're a student in the area - or anybody, I imagine, who needs a responsive and knowledgeable CPA - don't hesitate to go with Arbor Accounting. You will be much better off than trying to fumble through the software programs out there. I walked into the office late in tax season and Sean still handled everything promptly and at a good price. Worked with this company for mine and my husband's taxes for a few years. This last year (filed in…read moreFebruary 2023), my husband attended school while I was the sole provider for our family. He had no paperwork that was filed for our taxes. I bought our home before we were married, and am sole owner of many of our assets (on paper). Even though there were no tax filings for my husband at all this year, he was still listed as the "taxpayer" and I was listed as the "spouse." My husband called and asked if that was standard, or if they just decided to put him as the taxpayer because he's male. The return call, from the associate who filed our taxes, had the associate saying things like "is this a joke?" and making commentary about their "traditional values" as to why my husband was listed as the taxpayer. Last I checked, the IRS doesn't care about gender, and this company had absolutely no problem sending the bill to me, and not my husband. If they had said "no, we just did that because that's how it was last year" or "it just defaulted to that, there was no purposeful reason for the male to be listed as the taxpayer" then I wouldn't have cared. However, their antiquated and frankly sexist response was uncalled for an unacceptable. We will not be using this company to file our taxes in the future.
