I have been working with Clay for the past 14 years toward the beginning of my career in Chicago's multifamily industry. Clay has created and updated my resume several times over during that span of time. He crafts and customizes a resume that will make employers want to talk to you. Every single move forward in my career has been preceded by a telephone conversation with Clay and an update to my resume. Clay is amazing and hands-down the best in the business. He is an extremely good listener, very well-qualified, hyper-focused, courteous, poised, professional and always patient. He is just an amazing human being and genuinely cares about you as a client. Clay makes you feel like you are totally the top priority whenever you are communicating with him. He is extremely generous with his time and always gives you his undivided attention. His work is top notch and please know that his fees are extremely reasonable. Clay also acts as your personal career coach and gives you superior career direction. His suggestions are always dead-on. I cannot recommend him enough for resume creation and writing. I would never use anybody else! read more

I was struggling with transitioning from one career field to another. Although I had years and years of experience in the field, I just could not get the mental blocks out of my head when it came to putting it onto paper. So grateful to have found Clay. His experience and professionalism really showed through the whole experience, even when my schedule put us back weeks. He was incredibly patient. He even helped with my LinkedIn profile. After a few tweaks to my resume, when I took a step back and looked at it I was BLOWN away. I couldn't believe how he had pulled my experience all together and just from a few conversations-far better than I could. He is well worth the investment. read more

I made a career shift into being a teacher, I took a leap and wanted to land a job with no real experience so I called Clay. We spoke a few times on the phone and he sent me a draft resume that was wonderful. I felt so powerful with my resume and cover letter. He's very encouraging and offers tons of advice on interview questions. Honestly I was doubtful at my ability to even get interviews with no experience or even a teaching degree, Clay was so positive and encouraging that it gave me the boost I needed. That summer I had so many interviews at top schools it was becoming an issue, I know a large part of it has to do with his writing. I landed my dream school and I love my new career. I wanted to keep my resume updated just in case a budget cut, I called him and he once again cut me out a beautiful resume and cover letter for a very reasonable price. My wife has used him a handful of times in her career path and we joke about using him for confidence boosters. Very grateful we found him and now have two wonderful careers and a big part is all due to him! read more

This review is overdue, Clay was an excellent resource for me during my job hunt. His process is methodical and insightful, and helped me better understand what jobs I want to look for. His resume refining skills are top notch, and I couldn't be more thankful that I turned to him for help while looking for work opportunities. Can't recommend him enough, and would highly recommend his services whether you are between jobs, or looking for a better job than the one you are currently in. read more

I had the pleasure to work with Clay at AAA when updating my resume and needing a cover letter for a job posting that was especially important. Re-entering the job application process after many years as a stay-at-home mom was quite daunting, and I realized I needed professional help with a deadline quickly approaching. Luckily I started my search here on Yelp and came upon AAA. Clay responded promptly to my inquiry and set up a free consultation for the next day. His fees are extremely reasonable and his friendly and professional demeanor makes you feel confident in his abilities. He was able to send a first draft of a cover letter and resume the following day, and his first drafts were actually perfect. Quite a speedy turnaround time. Thank you Clay! read more

Clay was great. He was very fast and efficient. His interview seemed thorough and I think that this was exactly the type of help I was looking for. For years I stumbled around with a resume that I was insecure about. I had been to resume specialists in the past at college and online. They never went deep. I felt as though Clay was tactical and excavating. I now feel confident about my resume and I'm looking forward to seeing how it fares in my job search. Having a good resume really does take some of the anxiety associated with job searching away. If I had to make a recommendation for people working with Clay in the future, ask him for details on what the interviewing process will be like ahead of time. I came into the interview feeling like I should have prepared a bit more. It might be beneficial to standardize the interview process with a few written answers that are prepared beforehand. But looking at the final product, I'm not sure that would have made much of a difference. Clay is very good even with half-baked info, and he gives you an opportunity to review his work if it seems inaccurate. Overall, would highly recommend. read more

I accepted an awesome new job last week, so I can attest that Clay's process works and his skills are top notch! He helped me with my cover letter/resume and I was extremely happy with the outcome. He made my work experience stand out in a much more concise and meaningful way. I do want to note that I didn't hear back from several of the jobs I applied to. However, definitely keep in mind that you might just not be the right fit for every job. If you aren't hearing back, don't assume the resume isn't working or is incorrect. After working with Clay, once you find the right job/company, your resume will do exactly what it needs to do. Would (and have) recommend Clay to anyone looking to apply to a job with confidence. Thanks, Clay! read more

SHORT VERSION: I have a job because of Clay. Ok, I got an INTERVIEW because of Clay... and then got the job based on my interview, but you see my point. My resume worked. I had no calls and then I had calls. I had no interviews and then I had interviews. I had no job and now I have a job. DETAILED VERSION: We moved to Illinois in June and I've been job searching since then. I was looking for a job in two different industries and had about a dozen versions of resumes that I had written, rewritten, re-rewritten, etc. After sending out more than one hundred resumes (and posting on corporate sites, job search sites, various HR departments, etc) I had only one interview, but no offers. I honestly thought that it was just going to take a really long time to be able to break into the Chicago job market with my out-of-state experience. I met with Clay and decided to purchase two different resumes, one for each industry. (media communications and legal) Clay also does cover letters and interview coaching, salary negotiation, and all kinds of other career-related advice-giving. If you've never negotiated for a salary, this is very helpful. (Ladies, I know you're not as aggressive and brave as you should be when asking for what you deserve! Clay can help you through the negotiation conversation so you don't come off as unreasonable or insecure.) After I met with Clay and got my two brand new resumes, I began applying for jobs. I got calls within a couple of days. I got TWO interviews in both the industries I was looking in and - no joke- BOTH people I interviewed with said "you have a great resume! I can't believe you haven't been hired yet!" Courtesy statement or not, obviously something was working. And one of those interviews led to the job I started this week, working for a great firm, doing exactly what I wanted to do. My husband, who has an amazing resume and work history is having the same trouble and met with Clay last week. Hopefully, a job for him is just around the corner. Clay Cerny is a NICE, HONEST man who is talented at writing resumes. I highly recommend that you speak with him (first consultation is free!) about any concerns or questions or guidance you may need. If he knows of someone who does a specific type of resume better, he'll refer you. (ie- a government resume) Thank you Clay! read more

Ok, I don't typically write reviews, but I could not help myself. I have been searching for a resume writer and after interviewing a few, I decided to work with Clay because he was upfront about his processes (that were not going to go on forever, you know the feeling) and his prices sounded reasonable. He took the time to understand my experience, asked good questions... and when I received the resume I was impressed. He was able tell the story and highlight the key experiences. So, you know the feeling when you got a great bargain? Well, I feel I got double the value of what I paid for. Clay is professional, he adheres to the deadlines, returns phone calls, and delivers high quality product. I highly recommend Clay. He will not disappoint you. read more

I have been working with Clay for over 10 years and have referred countless friends. He has helped me through job changes, salary negotiations and career change explorations. I can honestly say that his resume/cover letter crafting skills, interview prep, and salary negotiation tactics have resulted in a double digit increase in my income from job to job. THE SMALL INVESTMENT IN HIS SERVICES PAYS OFF 20 FOLD. He is extremely generous with his time and is just an amazing human being. Thank you Clay for all you do! read more

Three years ago I resigned from a great position in Chicago and relocated to another state. This review is long over due. Why now? Clay's revamp of my resume led me to a new fulfilling career path I never thought possible. I never thought I would be doing what I do today and that alone reminds me it was because of the resume Clay did for me. A few months before relocating, I found Clay on Yelp and decided to meet with him. I never used this type of service but knew that it would be necessary as I wanted to switch careers and needed to find a new job asap in the other state. The place was not hard to find. I sat in his workspace and he was very to the point throughout the entire session. He was good at redirecting my responses and getting important details I never thought about as relevant. I decided to procure his services. I left confident that I made the right choice coming to Clay. In less than a week I returned to review what he drafted. I was very impressed with the format and wording technique. I could not believe that was my resume. Honestly, I realized I have been "underselling" my experience and skills for years. Clay captured accomplishments I never thought were relevant or worded in a way I never could. I thanked him for doing such a great job and I would call if I had questions, which I did a few days later. In the first week I posted my new professionally written resume, the calls and emails poured in. I had many phone interviews lined up. Even after relocating, the job hunt took months. Why months? I switched gears in what I wanted to do. I was being rejected from what I was applying to because I was now overqualified. Not a bad thing. I just needed to grasp that it was time to see myself as much more capable and qualified. This resume helped me get my foot in the door in a reputable established company two months after relocating. I had to prove in six months, as a contractor, that I can do what my resume described and much more. After six months, my employer created a position for me and hired me full-time. I never thought I could do the position I do now. It is truly a huge career change. I love what I do now. I am glad I spent the money to get my resume professionally written. Grateful I went with Clay. He knows what employers are looking for. He knows how to take what you say, and not say, to build a resume that brings your best to the forefront. Then it is up to you to impress the interviewers by bringing to life the name and experience on that resume. A well written resume gets you an interview. Your ability to communicate and elaborate what is on that resume will land you the job. Invest in yourself and meet with Clay. read more

Personally, I like Clay and think he's a great listener and provided good practical life advice. However, I could not recommend the services I received for resume/cover letter help for a young professional based on my experience. The work experience section was poorly formatted (lots of wasted space in the left margins) and difficult to read. The cover letter was extremely generic as well. It was similar to a document you could find with a quick google search. Overall, the quality of the resume/cover letter felt outdated and poorly formatted. I spoke directly with a hiring manager at a popular tech company and she had the same feedback for my resume. His services may be a better fit for mid-upper career level professionals in traditional roles. Pros: He will take the time to listen to your concerns and discuss your work experience and career goals. I felt very comfortable working with him. I think he would be a great person to work with for interview preparations as well. Cons: Overall quality of the resume/cover letter felt outdated. The content was good, but formatting could have been streamlined and more attractive. My resume was also two pages.....I've only been working full time for less than two years since graduating. read more

Clay is superb. He crafts your resume that highlights your professional life. He asks questions of your dream job and current position so that the resume can speak for itself. Read it so that you can speak to it too. You'd be surprised at how much you've accomplished read more

***I am reposting my review because Yelp took it down. I would just like to warn potential clients and have some recourse for the unprofessional way I was treated by the business owner. I joined Yelp specifically to review this business and my review is not made up*** I used the services of a professional resume writer and career coach to revamp my resume and get a good cover letter in hopes of getting more responses in my job search. I chose Clay's business due to the stellar reviews it received and to get personalized, hands on service. I had a mixed experience. When I arrived for my appointment on January 5th, Clay had a funny look on his face when he greeted me. He was in the middle of conducting another client's appointment and was not expecting me. He then realized he had mistakenly written me down in the previous year's appointment book. He said he was sorry and would make it up to me. One of the positions I was interested in had an application submission deadline of January 11th, so he offered to take me that Monday. I was a little apprehensive of the experience but thought it was nice of him to let me come back asap and after hours. I felt we had a good appointment on Monday and I accurately conveyed what I do and the experience and education I'd gained. However, I was a bit upset by what Clay said about my current resume. It was written by a friend who'd worked in Manhattan for the S&P 500 and had a lot of experience writing job descriptions. The format she used was what was popular in the NYC financial district at the time, and a representative from Robert Half who I met at a resume writing workshop told me it looked very good. Clay told me to tell my friend it was nothing special and actually quite common. Maybe he was right, but someone else I talked to who casually writes resumes thought it was a rude comment and that he wanted to sell me his resume service. When I saw my new resume, it was not as life-changingly phenomenal as I was expecting for $180. His original version was two pages, which is a definite no-no unless you are well into your profession with years of experience and achievements to list. We were able to cut it down to one page, and while it was an improvement over my old resume, I don't think it was worth quite that much money. He quoted a price of $160-$250 during the consultation. I am very early in my career and had a good foundation resume, so I feel that $160 would have been a more fair price. The cover letter was a disappointment. There were omitted words and grammatical errors I had to point out! I've always been told a cover letter fleshes out and highlights specific achievements that do not fit onto a resume. This cover letter was very generic and something I feel I could have written myself. It cost $60. Clay was not very professional, and he even used an obscenity and assumed a defensive, threatening demeanor when I expressed reservations about his work. He literally told me, "you're really starting to piss me off." He repeatedly said he would just refund my money almost as if it were a threat. I felt like there was not much time or care put into the product and it did not convey what I told him about myself and my career as accurately as I thought I expressed myself in our interview. Come to find out an english professor at Northwestern actually wrote the resume and cover letter (I checked the author of the word doc) - that explains everything! Although I paid him for his services and accepted his product, I would not work with this man again or recommend him to anyone I know. Even if he contacted me to make things right, I would not respond because I feel unsafe working with such an individual. No one should ever talk to a client that way. It is totally unacceptable. I went to Clay for professional, hands on service. If I wanted some disconnected stranger to write my resume, I would have used a dot com resume service. Please avoid!! ***Update: I've made numerous small revisions to the resume, the most egregious of which was the misspelling of an employer's name. Obviously I should have been more vigilant, but it potentially cost me about a dozen job interviews before I noticed. read more

I think what is great about Clay is that he really listens to you. I had just graduated but had a 20 page CV and wanted to push my career in a different direction. Clay listened to my concerns with an initial FREE consultation and then rewrote my resume and cover letter in a manner that both emphasized what I wanted and what companies were looking for. Before Clay, I had spent 2 months on the job search with no replies. After Clay, I fielded 3 interviews per week until I found a job. Not only that, I also consulted Clay for interview prep and he taught me how to "close" an interview which was amazing. After every interview, Clay kept in touch and followed through on keeping me calm and helping me counteroffer. His advice helped me both get the job AND an offer that met me 100% within 1 month of contacting him. Considering the economy and the number of my friends out of work, this was a wonderful surprise. Price wise, Clays services are a steal. I checked around and Clay's prices are less than half of what others charge and both his education (PhD in English) and experience (15 years) rivals those of anyone else in this business. If you've been out of work, give him a call. Its a worthwhile investment!!! read more

I am good at writing and marketing, and thus never used a resume service. However, I decided to give it a try because I wasn't getting the response I thought I should. I've even tried various versions of my resume. In my position it's not a cinch to get another job, as I have a lot of experience. I was impressed by Clay's interviewing process, getting info from me, and surprised at the result. I even told him, "This is not how I would have ever done a resume." It was assembled in a way I had never even thought of--and wasn't sure it would work. Surprise, in a month I had three interviews with three different firms. And I chose the best of the three. This wasn't a reflection of the improving economy or anything like that--the resume he did for me just spun the attention I'd been seeking in a new, positive direction. He didn't have to inflate or embellish what I'd done. It was just RIGHT. I highly recommend him. read more

So happy I went to Clay! In this tough economy, I knew I wanted a new resume and cover letter to sell my strengths. After reading many great Yelp reviews, I decided to give Clay a call. He was very inviting and I met with him for a free consultation. He listened well to what I was looking for and was honest about what he knew about my background and what he was thinking that I needed. He was not pushy and worked with my schedule. Clay is an honest person, and very well educated as he knows the latest of what is going on in the world and job related issues. I came in again and he took more notes as he interviewed me for an hour asking specific questions to help add strengths and qualifications to my resume. In defending Clay for his poor review below, I suggest that you come in for the consultation and look at his resumes that he's done for people in the past in the same line as yours before deciding whether or not you want to have it written that way or come in with a resume style that you are looking for. I believe the money is worth it especially when it comes to the job market andthe competitive field, the resume and cover letter s what gets you started. I was hesistant about spending that much too as I know there are services out there that are cheaper, but for me it was completely worth it. Clay finished my cover letter and resume and less than a week and emailed it to me. I was very pleased and am definitely recommending him to others. read more

I used Clay's services for 2 resumes, 2 cover letters, and interview coaching and it was a real turning point in my job search. I started getting more hits from applications, and my interviewing drastically improved by putting his points into practice. I just accepted an offer at my desired salary after 4 months of searching. There are a lot of resume writers and job coaches out there and I highly recommend Clay for his extensive knowledge and experience. Clay was easy to work with, he understood what I was trying accomplish and created a resume that gave me a chance. I was self employed for 18 years and decided to pick up and moved to SoCal in Jan 2014. I decided to work with him in April and received 3 job offers in May. I was pretty skeptical, I do not have an advanced degree just plenty of sales experience. The resume landed me some great opportunities and I will be starting my new job June 9th. I would recommend working with him regardless of your location, we did interviews and revisions over the phone and internet. read more

Superior service. AAA Targeted is a wonderful resource when you need your resume redone. Definitely recommend.

I'll make this short and sweet: Clay worked with me to create a cover letter and resume tailored for a single position I was interested in. I submitted the résumé and cover letter and received a call back two days later. I started my new job a few weeks later. Clay can't get you the job--only you can nail the interviews. What Clay does very well: he makes you look as good as possible on paper. If you want callbacks, use Clay! read more

Clay just "gets" it. I have a long and varied background and was really having difficulty telling my story in a way that didn't seem too junior or overly tactical. During our first call, I threw a lot of information Clay's way during a one-hour period. When he sent back the first draft, I was amazed at how much he had captured and articulated so well. With minor edits and a 30-minute discussion, Clay sent back the next version and he simply nailed it. I've already posted this new resume twice and gotten calls from each post. Clay is reasonably priced, incredibly skilled and very professional. I highly recommend him. read more

Long overdue. I can't thank this man enough. Easy. Upfront. Honest. Worth every penny. I had been applying at Amazon for months. After submitting Clay' s work, I got a response in 2 weeks. I have recommended Clay to everyone I know from family to friends, it might be a bit expensive but it was worth every penny. Especially when its about advancing your career. He helped me create two different kinds of resumes and cover letters, we went through everything about my professional career and he talked me through his methods and his style of writing. As soon as I put my resume out there and started responding to job posting with my cover letter as well I instantly got call backs and email backs. Who knows it might be my industry and my experience but I don't think so. Clay was a big help and I want to thank him for all he's done because I got an amazing opportunity to work for UC Berkeley which I am currently working. Thank you Clay for all your hard work! It paid off. read more

I recently visited Clay to give my current resume a jolt of life since I've had few hits on my "professional" resume. I've been job searching for a year with no success with my previous resume and at the advice of my collègue, who was in the same Masters program as myself, she suggested hiring a resume writer. After researching and talking with other resume writers, I choose Clay. He was very easy going, considerate, and asked valid questions that made actually think and explore my role in previous job positions- things I forgot I did. When it came down to editing the final draft, Clay was very responsive to my critics and worked collaboratively to get it right. I received my resume and cover letter this past Thursday and I already have a job interview for Wednesday. I'm not saying this will happen with everyone, but I have been looking for a year and this is the first job interviews I've had all year. I want to say thanks to Clay because he helped me realize how I under sold myself and for easing my frustrations with job searching. He has his resume writing certificate and a PHD in English which also a plus. I will suggest his services to anyone who ask because he was sooo great. Thanks again Clay. read more

I had been on a job search for several months before an aggressive corporate recruiter forced me to Yelp's job help section looking for a new approach. I found Clay there-- my problem wasn't my resume's content or format, but how I came off in interviews. Before Clay, I would get a ton of inquiries and interviews, but I couldn't lock something down. Enter Clay. He changed the way I approached interviews, teaching me to act more as a co-partner in interviews, as opposed to a beggar, and taught me how to handle questions and how to ask important questions of my own. We mock interviewed, and I got the job that we focused on! Clay is a kind guy, and has enormous practical experience and will get you moving in the right direction. Job hunting is stressful, and Clay is able to simplify that process and make you comfortable in your search. I'd recommend him to anyone. read more

Clay is the best! He is a scientist in resume writing. He takes the time to go over every single detail of your previous experience and future career goals, then he comes back with a beautiful written resume that is clear, perfectly formatted, and somewhat understated (as opposed to flashy and wordy). And if you forget to include something or would like to add or change something he'll be more than happy to do so. However, to save him time, I recommend that you are thoroughly prepared before meeting Clay. He is in demand and does everything himself. As for my resume, I've gotten tons or response and am thrilled to be entering a completely different field that is VERY competitive thanks to Clay. He was able to relate my past experience to my new role. Do not hesitate, whatever the challenge is Clay will have the answer. Thank you Clay AND thank you yelpers!!!! Clay was indeed a really nice man. So much so that it pains me to have to write this review. I spoke with Clay twice on the phone, and met with him twice in person. I expected this to be a very, very thorough process, and I was prepared to be impressed. I'd provided a previous and current resume, job descriptions that matched my search criteria, and my LinkedIn profile. I thought, "you know, this is expensive, but it's going to help so much." Several days after those meetings, I received the first draft of my resume and cover letter. Separate jobs while with the same employer had been combined (one a contract position, one after I'd been hired full time), facts about the roles were switched. Dates were changed without initial explanation. The only thing special about this resume was the errors. I didn't notice any keywords, the layout was neither customized nor clean: everything was templated. Verbiage used did not accurately describe my experience. The cover letter was very general, focusing on soft skills rather than compelling facts or achievements that would lead an employer to actually want to move on to the resume. For obvious reasons, I asked for a rewrite. I received the second draft, and I noticed that some of my requests had been answered but others went unchanged without explanation. The resume still just didn't stand out and neither did the cover letter. Lastly, and likely most pointedly representative of my experience with this business: when the name of your alma mater contains the state in which it is located, its location should not be in error. For example, and I'm making this one up to illustrate the mistake that was made: Central Minnesota University is not located in Mount Sunrise, Indiana. Each time I'd spoken with Clay, it was like he hadn't reviewed any of the documents for which he'd asked and I'd supplied. I wound up rewriting and reformatting the resume and the cover letter myself, and I had a former leader help me review it. I don't mean to sound harsh, but when you've lost your job, throwing away good money and wasting time on meetings and document reviews that are eventually ignored anyway just aren't productive job search activities. This service was not cheap, and the attention to detail simply wasn't there. Perhaps he was focused on his upcoming vacation (of which he reminded me several times during this lengthy process), but I'd look elsewhere for assistance with your job search documents. read more

I'm not a fan of posting negative reviews, but after my resume was revised using AAA's services in late 2011, I have not been able to secure an interview. Fortunately I am currently employed, and simply in search of new opportunities. It was easier to get an interview (and a new job!) in 2010 when I had less experience and the job market was far worse in my industry than it is today. I work in the property casualty insurance industry, and an insurance recruiter who does nothing but review incoming resumes said mine shows loads of talent and an impressive array of marketable skills, but was crafted in such a fashion that most insurers would dismiss it after a cursory review. I will be completely restructuring my resume in a fashion more consistent with what I was told by this industry recruiter (for free). Again, I am more a fan of providing positive feedback, but my career is very important to me, and I thought working with this business would help, not hurt my progress. read more

Well done, Yelp! Normally, I wouldn't want to share a secret that gives me a competitive edge amongst fellow job seekers. However, with the economy being as it is, I consider it a humanitarian duty to let the world know about Clay. Seriously, folks, save yourself the hassle of trying to figure out your resume on your own. This guy knows what he's doing, and he's been doing it as a full time standalone career for over ten years now! He took my lackluster one page resume and turned it into a professional, detailed, and accurate document of my career accomplishments. His interview process mined down the information I would have never thought to include. He was like an antique hunter, shining a flashlight deep into the cobweb covered attic of my memory and dusting off forgotten, yet valuable, artifacts. In addition, he created a cover letter targeted to my desired field of work. I just can't say enough about how thrilled I am with the end product. Wow...just wow. Thanks so much, Clay! Unfortunately, the resumes didn't seem to have helped me in landing any job. OK, I made it sound really bad, but given this kind of economy, my lack-of-luck in job hunting may not be due to the professionally-written resume...?! blame someone else but not Clay, or even myself. Clay is the Man. He seems a bit quirky at first but there's no bang for the buck as good as Clay can provide. I first met Clay in the fall of 2006 and he helped me with my resume. I started getting calls right away. His office is filled with books and materials on resume and job hunting strategies. He is truly an expert in this field. I've used him on two other occasions and he has done a great job. I have sent him many referrals too. His work landed them jobs too almost immediately. I would recommend him highly. read more
