I want to tell you about the time that the one company I wanted to rely on completely abandoned me... In the snow... Lost... While somehow making things completely worse for me and for my family.
This past year, we took a trip up to the mountains with the dogs. Great cabin and trip and area. On our second day, we took a drive and (long story short) became stuck in the snow at 10AM.
My girlfriend and I tried to free the car for 4 hours (until 2PM). At that point, we knew we needed to begin the trek to find help (no signal in the mountains for any carrier). By this point, we were tired, cold, and pretty bloodied up (from finding sticks and stones in the snow to prop up the car). We had water, luckily, but no food. Our jackets were wet and one of our dogs was already cold and whimpering. Things were not looking great.
After an hour of walking, we found help. A very nice woman allowed me to use the phone and call for help. AAA answered, and the operator and I confirmed (and double and triple confirmed) the following things would happen:
1) The sheriff was coming to our location to provide aid and warmth.
2) A tow truck was coming to tow our car.
3) We need to wait in the middle of the road for an hour until the tow truck arrives.
Before I continue, please re-read the above. We finally had help and we had support coming. We left the nice woman's house with a bit less anxiety and a bit more hope in our eyes.
Unfortunately, this agreement never happened. INSTEAD, what AAA did was the following:
1) The sheriff was sent 500 miles away to my mom and dad's house. The sheriff said (And I directly quote): "We got a distress signal from your son and we do not know where he is". My mom and dad are now terrified and were mere minutes away from making the 500 mile drive that night to find me
2) No tow truck came. The tow truck was cancelled by voicemail, even though it was made extremely clear that I had zero signal and will not have any further contact capability.
3) We waited in the road for 3 + more hours in the cold, snow, and slurry rain for the sheriff and the tow truck.
NO HELP ARRIVED.
NO WARMTH ARRIVED.
NO SAVING CAME. ONLY NIGHTFALL CAME.
WE NOW HAD TO EITHER SLEEP IN THE CAR OR RISK GOING OUT IN DARK TO FIND HELP
We wandered through rain and hail and wind (wish I was exaggerating) to get back to the nice woman's house for more help. By this point it was dark, and the entire walk, we were using our cell phone's flashlight so we wouldn't get hit by oncoming traffic (Which only drove past us).
We finally were able to charter a private tow company to come out and help us. They came out at 10PM at night. We rationed water, food, and our existing dry clothes for 12 hours prior to help. All of this would be avoided is AAA were to have done what they promised me from the beginning, instead of their decision to completely abandon me.
[[ FAST FORWARD SEVERAL WEEKS OF INTERNAL INVESTIGATION ]]
AAA tells me that their sister company in nor cal has an entirely different, FRAUDULENT, story behind their actions. They further refused to release the phone call or transcript from my one phone call and that there is nothing else they can do. They do not even issue an apology for the experience and instead comp my next years' AAA membership.
This is not the company that you want to put your faith into. In my 43 years of membership, I have had to use their services ONCE. This will be my first and only time I will use them.
I DEEPLY URGE that you look for another roadside assistance program. AAA has proven that they will leave you completely abandoned when you are in a dangerous area and will not even care about your situation. Even worse, they will forward your cry for help to your parents and not provide any further information.
Please save your children, your wife, your pets, and your own life. Find another company. Two weeks after we were (self) rescued, another couple was lost in the same place we were and they had a very, very different fate (the man was lost for 3+ days and was eventually found in coma in the snow). read more
