As well as complimentary bread and butter we received a little pot of sardine paste and a round of delicious cheese as well, this is one of the things I love about eating in Portugal! It's important not to fill up too much though as the portions have a tendency to be large, and this was no exception. I ordered to polvo de galinha (roasted octopus) served with potatoes, onions and olives. It was delicious and really tender. Other dishes included bacalhau (salted cod) and picanha (steak). Even my 15 month old was happy to try everything although he wasn't totally taken with the octopus! Mine was so huge I had to get the rest to take away and there was certainly no room for desserts even though the bulging cabinet looked tempting! The staff were really friendly and accommodating of the little one. And the crab and lobster tank was a great distraction for him.

This would have maybe been forgivable if it hadn't been for the fact that the scallops were awful, the oysters gritty (this is maybe not totally fair as six of the French one's were superb) and the shallot sauce was hardly there. The wine we ordered was okay, but the water we ordered never arrived. The place looked like it was trying to be a classy French bistro, but ended up looking like a the dining room in Fawlty Towers. We knew it wasn't cheap, and the bill was as expected, but I can promise you that it wasn't worth it. We won't be going back, and will be advising visiting friends to avoid it.

We were disappointed at the time but we found many other restaurants that had good seafood as well. We were traveling with other family members this time and thought this restaurant would be the best places to try pretty much every seafood dishes available in Lisbon and some of the unique foods that we can't get at home. We had barnacles, glass shrimp (it is supposed to have eggs outside the shell but unfortunately we were told the season was over so there were no eggs), spider crab, oysters with caviar, scallops, razor clams, and cheese with bread. We also wanted an authentic Portuguese place and not anything touristy. Be careful what you wish for! We took a number but were almost bypassed as they were calling higher numbers. I got the "matre d's" attention and showed him my number. He spoke no English as could be expected - not an issue! So, he bumped us up to the front of the line. We climbed a long narrow and steep staircase to reach a long narrow hallway with about 20 staff running about and squeezing by each other. Somehow, we found the dining room and our waiter greeted us offering us a choice of tables. Clientele were very well dressed and spoke in Portuguese looking very comfortable. He immediately brought us a huge basket of garlic bread! It was quite a nice atmosphere and reminiscent of an older home with high ceilings. We had trouble ordering from the phone app (as it should be because it was in Portuguese only) so our waiter guided us. No IPA and no wine except moscatel. But this was a cerveseria with no IPA! So we tried two glasses of moscatel- not our favorite as it was much too sweet. We agreed to the garlic shrimp and lazy crab. I asked what it came with and he said nothing and pointed to the garlic bread. I asked about ordering veggies and he said there were none! The crab was fridge cold but would have been better warm. The shrimp could have been tasty if not so salty. It wouldn't have been such a culture shock but it was also very pricey for what is was. I don't regret this experience as I was immersed in Portuguese culture and food. But no veggies is unthinkable! lol
