Something that is becoming a bit of a lost art in Hawaii is getting custom surfboards for wall or home decorations. Before there used to be a lot of shops who made them but now there are only a few on the island. Surprisingly the one place I was able to find it for a wedding gift was a tattoo shop. The communication between the owners and me was excellent. I was able to tell him exactly what I wanted, he made five different variations of what I was looking for and worked around what I thought looked the best. The turn around was a week but it was well worth the wait. I could've maybe found something in Etsy for cheaper or just bought something from the ABC Store for a gift but a gift that is unique, made by a local artist and you can authentically say I got this from Hawaii is what I think made me decide to go with them and it did not disappoint. Panama did a wonderful job on my daughter's jagua tattoo. She chose the jagua instead of a henna because she liked the darker stain it leaves compared to the reddish brown. Panama is a true artist. He freehanded his artwork before using the fruit "stain". He was very professional. In the very short time he created beautiful artwork on her hand. I suggest you see him or his fellow artist Yumiko. They are both fantastic! We saw the great work she did on other clients as we were waiting for my daughter's turn. He worked roughly 20 minutes on her hand. Super impressed! My 2 friends and I went to get some henna tattoos for the first time. It was an amazing experience and each of our tattoos only took about 20-30minutes. I haven't been to the Ala moana location but the location for this studio is in an area that is a little secluded from the other shops. It may be a difficult to find but not too hard since we were able to find it within 5minutes after our GPS led us to an area with many shops. Upon entering there was a binder filled with many designs of henna/Jagua tattoo. I have not known this, but Jagua is a black ink and an alternative to henna which very much resembles a tattoo once peeled and stays on longer than a henna. If you're not educated with henna/Jagua tattoo feel free to ask Panama (I believe she is the lady that was helping my friends and I) or that other gentlemen which was also nice to educate us as well. If you're confused they also give you a card which has their website listed and guidelines on how to care for your newly henna/Jagua tattoo ^_^. Panama was such a nice individual and we came around 830pm and they close around 9pm. We were happy that she was able to take us on despite going over their available hours. I definitely recommend going here if you're in the area because who doesn't love a temporary tattoo? I came here yesterday with my friends and the man that owns the place and his wife were so friendly! We chose designs from the book and even mixed two designs together. I would give this place a 6 star if I could. The lady was super sweet and such an angel. She asked what I wanted, I showed her a picture. And she started drawing on my arm. She took her time to make sure my first time was absolutely the best. Her husband came by the shop, and was entertaining my husband and I with some history, advices on where to eat. My dress kept wanting to touch the ink, and they both were like oh no!!!! Let's take care of that. They tied my dress, making sure I wouldn't mess up the work. I did wait 4 hours for it to dry 100%. Made sure no one was near me lol... when you wash it off, make sure it's dry, then w warm water just rinse and use your hand to massage and rinse off. After that just Pat dry and enjoy!!! A lot of them are displayed on the walls, but there are also binders of designs you can look through too. They will also do designs from the internet, so you can just pull up a design on your phone and find a design you want. I got the jagua tattoo, which is a darker dye than the henna.
