When we got the bill we were charged for bread 2 butters and a sardine paste that we didn't eat nor touched. Mind you the food was absolutely delicious. The waiters are nice and attentive. We spent a month in the Algarve and ended up dining here at least 10 out of 30 nights. We kept trying to find another restaurant that could compare--and never did. The food is authentic Portuguese cuisine at its finest. The clams, made from the owner's grandmother's recipe, are hands-down the best I've ever had in my life. Honestly, it doesn't matter what you order--everything on the menu is exceptional. Be adventurous. You won't regret it. The restaurant is family-owned and family-run, which adds so much to the experience. Vitor runs the kitchen and delivers incredible food every single night. His wife Ines runs the front with grace and warmth. Luan and Joah were there every evening we visited, offering some of the best service we've ever experienced anywhere--professional, kind, and genuinely caring. He brought the sangria in a small pitcher and put the final touches (mixing in some mint) at the table, then poured her glass. We've had sangria all over Spain and Portugal, and this may be the best I've ever tasted (yes, she let me taste). The service was friendly, the pace relaxed, and the energy great. A full menu awaits you, in several languages, so there is no room for confusion with what is on offer. The fish is fresh and on display, and I would highly recommend the Grilled Dorado. Though full of bones, so pay attention, as they can easily hide, the fish is tender, has a wonderful flavour and is cooked just right. Served with a generous portion of vegetables, carrots, green beans and potatoes, none of which are over-cooked! Really I knew the portion would be way too much for me, but was told by my Portuguese companion that it was not the done thing to take anything away, so sadly I had only a bite of each vegetable, but enough to know each was perfectly cooked. The cafe and vino tinto excellent, but I would suggest a demi-bouteille, (for two people) and not a full bottle as my friend insisted. So when in the town of Loule, do try Alfonso III, and if you are so lucky to stroll back to wherever you are staying and the moon is full, tant mieux. Fresh grilled sardines in season are amazing -- May thru July. Prawn and monkfish skewers (espetadas) are excellent as is the polvo (octopus) prepared in a variety of traditional ways. My favorite here is Polvo la Guerreiro -- basically grilled tentacles served in olive oil with simply roasted potatoes and garlic and a simple salad. Get bread to mop up the garlic infused olive oil when done. The cozy upstairs dining room is charming and service is impeccable.
