Seriously worth this 5 star rating. We've been here twice now. Maria is super patient and kind. My son's hair is curly, but thinning with age. So he doesn't have the glorious mane he use to and long around the sides with balding on top isn't a becoming look. Maria has shortened things up and he looks so handsome. The curls are trying to sabotage our efforts, but so far we are winning. Maria has a calmness and a confidence that puts you at ease. And she's quick. We we're in and out in no time. I had her trim me up as well (ladies and children are welcome) and I'm extremely happy with my trim. Walk ins are welcome too. Parking is a little tight and there are meters. That's right in front of the shop. I've been able to park in front so far, so am not sure if there is a lot somewhere. We'll worth the trip I have to make to get there. What's not to like? It's in a nice area and the shop has a nice vintage feel to it, displaying its roots as a local barbershop. I started going to Maria in Pleasanton, over 30 years ago, and I have never had a bad haircut, in fact, I still get complements on my hair! Check her out, you won't be disappointed! read more

Great haircut from Maria! Maria and Nancy used to cut hair at the Moraga barbershop for 17 years until it changed ownership. Last year, they bought this Lafayette barbershop when the longtime owner retired. New location for them but same great cuts, for a very reasonable $30. Walk ins welcome but I'd recommend making an appointment. read more

"A Man's Choice Barber Shop" in Lafayette is run by "Ziko," a third generation Barber with over 40 years' experience. At 69 years of age, I am fortunate to sill have a full head of hair, and I want to go to the best Barber I can find. Ziko is so incredibly talented that he is one of the few Men's Hairstylists remaining who can do razor haircuts. If you've never had a razor haircut before (and the odds are you haven't), I STRONGLY recommend you try it. Your hair will "lay" almost perfectly and will feel much softer. I will also be much easier to blow-dry and style. When I lived in the Bay Area I was in the South Bay and drove 72 miles (each way) to go see Ziko. When I moved to Los Angeles, I used every opportunity to go to San Francisco so I could get my hair styled. In sum, that's precisely how good Ziko is. I cannot say enough good things about Ziko's work, and I recommend his services highly. I hope you have found this review helpful. read more

I'm kind of shocked he has only one review. Old school barber, dry Eastern European wit. It's actually hard to get an appointment, even on weekdays. I told him he should hire help and he said "no one wants to be barber anymore". If you need a straight up men's haircut, definitely recommended. He's good with (well behaved) kids as well. read more

Went there this week, in a pinch. See, I'm smack in the middle of my "Awkward Grow Out Phase" - the time between a shaven dome and stylable hair, usu. lasting 2 mos., and I had heard that this was *the* place to get your hair cut...even for former Super Bowl MVP QB's that live in the area. Enough said. I tried on a Monday, but Ziko keeps real barber's hours. So back I went and was able to slip in before an appointment that he had coming in. He immediately went to work, making the most most out of a not-so-great canvas. I was out in a flash, feeling loads better about the state of my hair. Look, I've done the salon thing...and I (have just) done the barber thing - each has its own strengths. Ziko will do you right for a not-cheap $20, but you know what? I'm going to go back and get a real barber shave ($22) one of hese days. read more

Just got a walk-in cut from Louise and it was exactly what I wanted. Friendly staff, no wait....I'll be back again.

This gentleman accommodated me very promptly but everything else about this experience was terrible. He was rushed, did not listen to what I had to say, and was a bit rude at times. "A Man's Choice Barber Shop" has been a staple in Lafayette for decades. The shop is owned and operated by Ziko, a multi-generational Barber from the former Soviet Union who learned the trade from his Father who learned it from his Father, who learned it from . . . When I resided in Los Angeles, I went to a Men's Hair Styling Salon where I paid $155 for a haircut. This was 16 years ago, and it was the most upscle men's Salon in Beverly Hills. My standing appointment every other Tuesday was between two well-known celebrities. While $155 (not including tip) was a pretty penny to pay for a man's haircut (especially 16 years ago), I felt it was worth every cent. The stylist's reputaton was well earned, and he was the only stylist who could cut my hair perfectly. Ziko is every bit as skilled as my Beverly Hills Salon . . . but at a fraction of the price. A testament to Ziko's skill is his ability to do a razor haircut. Very few Barbers know how to do a razor cut these days, and it requires a great deal of skill and technical precision, and Ziko does it for a mere $30.00. A regular haircut is about $22.00. This is a true one chair Barber Shop, not a fancy salon. I am very particular about my haircuts, and I recommend Ziko highly. While Ziko accepts walk-ins, I would strongly suggest making an apointment as his schedule is typically booked most of the time. read more

Ziko is the best. If you want a good hair cut from a real barber, he's the guy to go to. Just call and make an appointment ahead of time.

First the two bad reviews are apparently written by the same person who has a vendetta against Ziko for some reasons. Check out the wording "I walked in off the street..." in both reviews. An uncommon phrase but used by both (?) reviewers. I've been using Ziko for over twenty years. And he is not only the kind of barber who can give that unique haircut that looks as though you didn't have a haircut, but he is amiable and easy going. He can carry an interesting conversation or keep quiet, taking his cue from the customer. And he has an excellent memory about the things you share with him. From Odessa he does have a slavic accent, but that's a plus. I strongly recommend him, but do get an appointment. Walk ins are welcome but not always accommodated because he's generally booked up with appointments. read more

Zico is the man. Love that guy. I can see how he can rub people the wrong way when they call or walk in but it is just a cultural thing. I have finally found a barber shop who cuts my hair right and it doesn't look all lopsided or messed up. He seems to have big heart and truly cares about how you are doing and whats new in your life. I've been using 'A Men's Choice Barber Shop' for over 15 years. Ziko is a highly skilled professional both in his trade and in customer service. He creates a warm atmosphere even with first comers. His ability to make you not only a client but a friend is amazing and it is furnished with a spice of good humor. He is one of rare barbers who possesses a perfect technique of "razor cut" (very rare met). If I have to describe him in in two words, here it is: "razor sharp - razor cut". Great barber shop. Russian razor cutter, hockey fan (plus other lesser sports), works quickly but does a fabulous job. I fly back from Vancouver for hair cuts! You need an appointment but he is usually very accommodating. read more

New to town, needed a cut, went looking for a nice barber. I remembered seeing this place "A Man's (Bad) Choice Barber Shop" while on a walk through town with the folks. Note: the ONLY thing written on the entire right side window of this establishment is: "Walk-ins Welcome". So, I walk in. Only having plastic on me, no cash, I ask "are you cash only?" The little barber replies, after a weird pause, and in his Eastern Euro-Block accent, "yes, I am cash only...and I am appointment only." That's it, no "would you like to make an appointment?", no "here, take my card so you can call and make an appointment." Just the stink of "beat it new guy to town, I am soooooo busy with all of my current clients that I wouldn't dare think to be courteous to a new young man looking for a good barber to come to from now until I freaking retire." You need to change your window signage, along with your business acumen, ZIko. read more
