Friend and I decided to visit A Good Yarn. It's a sister shop to Four Purls yarn shop in Winterhaven, FL I was looking for a particular brand of yarn which the staff at Four Purls told me was available at A Good Yarn. It's a much smaller shop than Four Purls but a really nice store. They carry more upscale yarns and I found yarns I've heard of but never seen or felt. They had the yarn I was looking for and I bought it, along with a few other selections (who can resist?). A great store. I'll visit it again the next time I'm in the area. read more

For all those who had left unhappy reviews-- Good Yarn was recently purchased by Four Purls in Winter Haven and has changed dramatically. It is now a helpful, friendly shop with wonderful stock. I had also gone into the store in the past and been treated rudely and mostly ignored. Not this time, I was greeted, offered help and they even went out of their way to bring in some more of their hand dyed yarn from their other store so I would have enough for my project. I'm really disappointed. A Good Yarn has gone downhill. They recently moved to a new location near I-75, which is a significant downsize from their old location in selection. Whenever I'm in town, I always stopped by their old location and bought at least $200 worth of yarn. I walked in with my mom, and one of the ladies that worked at the store automatically assumed it was my mom that knew how to knit and told her about the yarns they had (while I was left behind standing there). My mom doesn't know how to knit. I'm the young adult that has been knitting for over 15 years. I came on a Saturday, and there were many ladies gathered around a table in the middle of the store, chit chatting away very loudly and obnoxiously, with their chairs in the way of comfortably going through to other parts of the store. It's a good thing that they have customers supporting them during covid times, although I wish it was like the old store where they had a separate space for the table so it wouldn't get in the way as much. It's kind of dark in the store so I felt a little uncomfortable with so many people in there, even though everyone was masked. The entire time I was there, no one said a word to me. They would help the people who walked in after me though. I wasn't going to buy anything, but I bought a few items since I had traveled from far away. None of their current selections interest me- it used to have a lot of hard-to-find and interesting yarns I liked, but it's turned into another old lady florida yarn store. I want to support small businesses, but when there's nothing that looks interesting to buy, and no one is there to help or says hello, I'll be buying yarn online from now on. read more

I was so glad to have a friend recommend this shop. The new location is great, right off the highway in a small street mall with great parking in a quiet area. The owner, Susan was wonderfully helpful. She is so knowledgeable about yarns and designers and so helpful in directing you to what would work best for your knitting project. There was a knowledgeable lovely spinner and a knit designer, Barb, who was also great about answering questions even about other projects. The assortment of yarns is great with luxurious fibers and good selection of less expensive yarns also. There is so much to choose from that we spent at least two hours picking things out and we were all so pleased with our choices. I was very impressed with the friendliness, helpfulness & general community spirit I felt from the very first moment I walked into The Good Yarn. There is a large array of yarn-from the frou-frou ribbony type to big thick chunky wool you typically can never find in Florida yarn shops. There was a group of us and while one needed help with a current project & was helped immediately by one of the staff, the others of us wanted to find our next project. We had no less than 3 people giving advice, suggesting yarns and discussing their latest projects also. Even though this was quite a drive for me, I would gladly make this drive again to learn from some of the experts at the community table. Which brings me to my only reason I wouldn't be able to spend the day, the chairs around the table were not comfortable and I like to be cozy when I knit. Hard folding chairs don't beckon me for an all day knit session...and I have built in padding! :-D Overall, tho, I am already making plans to go back! I was here for a visit from Michigan and was happy to see my local favorite dyer, the Plucky Knitter, had a recent trunk show, so I was able to pick out some of her beautiful yarn. I did not expect to find such a beautiful array of yarns from affordable to luxury. Not to mention their great sale section. Usually yarn stores are stingy with their sale yarn (low discount/selection), not here! There is such a wide array of brands and fibers, I was seriously impressed. Given that this is Florida, I expected all linen, cotton, and other non-animal fibers in lace or fingering weight. What a delight and surprise this store is and their staff was friendly and helpful. I left happy, impressed, and a few hundred bucks poorer...then I came back for just a skein or two more! read more

This Small Business Saturday I took out of towners to visit A Good Yarn's new location to show off the new location and support our local yarn shop! Instead, I was left shell-shocked and disgusted. I was turnt away immediately by an associate who gave me a haughty up and down upon entering and spat, "You have to LEAVE". No please, no plattitude or offered alternative. Impatiently, the associate followed with a snearing, "Your," she gestured to my brother, "...is wandering." To HURRY us out. This was simply shocking because although I have visited A Good Yarn (AGY) MULTIPLE times over YEARS with my service animal. NEVER once have I had a problem with this 'pet policy'... I am native to this area, and have been an avid knitter and textile worker for 20+ years. The only difference in this visit from my many others is that I have begun transition and am 100% visably queer/ transgender... ‍ Holidays aren't easy time for me anyways I had been trying to show off a Good Yarn, but was instead embarassed, experienced a panic attack and had a chronic medical condition flare up. It really brought down my holiday weekend. Since I have history with the store, a loyal patron for years, and my older relations frequent here I took the time to call the manager about my experience. I was hopeful that feedback would be welcome and a reasonable explanation could be found for this incident (something like a new associate, new location policy, or lackluster training etc.). Instead of a prompt response, my call was screened by the offending AGY associate and I was not called back for days... I tried again the next week..... When I finally got on the phone with the (ownership) wife, she was immediately confrontational (her distain and distaste were barely concealed). She refused to provide her name when I asked, she talked over me constantly- I couldn't even get a word in. The owner was not apologetic about their methods of "customer service", and offered no recourse for the associate. I even was illegally asked to "bring proof or paperwork" for my therapy animal by the ownership for next time! As per the ADA a business cannot require you to provide special ID cards for your service animal or ask for the animal to perform tasks to prove it is a service animal. In summation her message was a 'tough luck kid- my business my choice of patrons' , and they are flying in the face of the ADA 1990 act and Public Health Laws. I'm really hurt that as adults there isn't a better solution than me having to write a warning to others that the store isn't a welcoming public environment. I'm unsure if it is just the culture of AGY is bad, the ownership of the store is prejudiced against millenials / LGBT / who knows what, or maybe something has soured there.... Who can say what, or knows what caused this rather sudden downturn from my previous experiences.... although I have an idea... I don't have the time or energy for further investigation into the baggage there. I gave ample opportunity to AGY to keep long term customer(s) and even came out to support them on Small Business Saturday, instead it was handled unprofessionally and without any grace. I've spent thousands of dollars here over the years and my whole family used to shop here but they've lost a loyal client over something very stupid (uncouth behavior). * There are MANY online alternatives to this store.* Also, sarasota/St.Pete is a treasure trove of high quality yarn and textile stores. AGY is not the only option and is very expensive compaired to JimmyBeansWool.com and others....I highly reccomend that you look elsewhere for your stash and notions needs. It's unlikely that you'll experience something as bad as this but do you really want to support someone who doesn't treat all clientele with respect and dignity? read more

She likes to make you feel like 'you've' done something wrong. They've lost a great customer but Bit O Yarn, Englewood has gained one, whose owner Carrie is awesome and eager to help. read more

I was disappointed with the staff and patrons The Good Yarn. I found this dirty little rummage shop lacking in customer service, cliquish and unfriendly. For many years, I heard rave reviews about this LYS and found it severely lacking of the hype. After a long drive from Tampa, I happened to have entered the store at the same time as a regular who was promptly greeted, welcomed and asked for assistance. On the other hand, I was ignored. The employee practically pushed past me to give the other customer a hug and they began chatting as they sat at the table to join others knitting. As I walked around to check out the yarns, I found on the bottom shelf a few skeins of Quince & Co yarns, covered in dirt which must have blown in from the front door. The Brooklyn Tweed yarns: Shelter, Peerie and Loft were a jumbled and mixed up mess of colors and weights. While making my way through a very narrow passage of shelves, I noticed behind tchotchke a sign "Rowan Flagship Store". As I looked through the selection, there wasn't enough yarn in any color or base to make anything more than a "one skein wonder" and never a shawl or sweater. The Shibui yarns are proudly displayed on one wall while the colors look beautiful, it looks like they bases were all mixed up and I couldn't find more than 2 matching skeins. I attempted to get assistance from one of the staff however she was too busy chatting. I walked to the register to make a purchase however the cashier left the register twice to help someone else instead of ringing up my purchase. On the second interruption, I left. A long joyless drive home convinced me to never darken the doorstep of The Good Yarn and to tell everyone I know to not waste their time driving here. read more

As a loyal customer and employee of this store I felt I needed to add a few remarks. Yes, when we are busy we sometimes can't break away to greet every customer. Our mask policy is firm and despite your beliefs we follow science and require masks, do you want your surgeon to show up without a mask for your next surgery? Fabulous store with oh-so-beautiful choices of yarn and many finished items for us to ooh and ahh over. Attentive and helpful staff who are eager to assist and answer questions. Drive from tampa with my knitting group and we all walked out with a nice bag of assorted yarns, patterns, and needles. I'm new to knitting and don't have a machine (some fancy name I'm sure!) that winds into a ball the yarn and I was disappointed that they only wound one skein for me. I bought a few and overall spent, in my opinion, a fair amount of cash. I would have done the remainder myself but the machine isn't for customer use. Not a big deal to most yarn crafters probably because they have the winding-thingy. That said, I'd still return and look forward to that visit. read more

The ladies here are beyond friendly. All are very knowledgable and helpful. The selection of yarn is out of this world. All high quality yarns. It's not JoAnns, so don't expect to find cheap yarn. Some fancy yarns can run $30 for a skein. Wish they offered coupons or sale days to help the bank account, but I keep coming back because the selection is unlike anything around. read more

I found this shop through my Yarn Places app. What a great store. Fabulous staff. Wonderful owners. Great selection of yarns, if they don't have it I'm betting they can get it. If you live in the area and have not been to this store, get thee there promptly! If you're on vacation, put this on your bucket list! If you have the opportunity to hear the stories behind their exclusive yarns, ask for Murray (the owner's husband). With everything else there is to look at, don't overlook their sale yarns. I really like to support local yarn shops. This shop has a lovely selection of premium yarns at premium prices.I loved shopping there and got some great yarn. They have a lot of help running around to sell you yarn but only one winder and no one willing to wind more then one of the six skeins I bought. I can wind my own yarn but If I'm going to do that I will buy it on the internet at a discount. read more

I've been a customer of this fabulous shop for about seven years. If you're looking for an incredible selection of every type of fiber from the finest cashmere to merino, alpaca, linen, cotton, and yak this is your place. The staff is super helpful, and they welcome customers to sit at two large tables and knit as a group. I've made some great friends here and it's my therapy after a busy week at work. They have a terrific selection of samples so you can see what the yarn looks like knitted up. In short, I don't think there's a better yarn shop in the Tampa Bay area, probably not in all of Florida. I took a class from Keith. It was a brioche class. When I got in trouble, he just had me rip it out. With his experience he should have been able to see what I was doing wrong. I was doing one wrong stitch. Keith should have sat with me or saw what I was doing wrong. The whole class became a waste for me because I could never practice what he was teaching. I would never take another class from him. He should have been able to read my knitting when he was suppose to be that good. The shop is lovely but they are out to sell you yarn, etc. I hope they would help you even if you did not purchase the yarn there. My stores back home do not care if the yarn came from them or not. I travel extensively for my work and make it a practice to track down the LYSs in the areas I'm visiting. To date this is one of the top two I have found. Of course, what I'm looking for is a shop that has something distinctive -- items that they carry exclusively -- which can be challenge for some. Here I was not disappointed. The exclusive colorways from Three Irish Girls and phenomenal. I purchased 2 for making socks but know that I will be back for more. On vacation and took my knitting supplies with me to work on a new pattern. As luck would have it, the pattern called for a stitch I had not done before. A quick Yelp search took me to A Good Yarn. What a find! Very friendly assistance with a quick tutorial on how to complete the stitch. I could have spent the day in the store because of all the beautiful skeins of yarn but hubby was in the car waiting. I bought a stein to finish my work and off I went to vacation home to continue my knitting. Thanks so much to the fine ladies of A Good Yarn. I recently stopped at A Good Yarn after dropping friends off at the Sarasota Airport. I was greeted shortly after coming in which is always nice. I found the help to be friendly but not pushy. There was a good crowd of knitters at the big table and there was plenty of good natured conversation coming from that direction. I loved their specially dyed yarns from 3 Irish Girls, great Florida color schemes like Beach Glass, the colors came in several weights and wool blends for socks, scarfs or sweaters. Their notions nook was wonderful, I finally got to see the new square needles everyone's talking about. While my budget is tight right now I purchased 2 skeins of yarn from their sale section and got to indulge in some Yarnie Goodness for less than $20. I'll certainly be back again. read more

After years of patronizing this store, yesterday I purchased fairly expensive needles which I then realized were not what I required. On returning today (almost 20 miles each way), the needles in their unopened wrapping, I was told\they would not take them back for cash or credit This is nonsense, poor customer service, especially considering they do take back unused yarn. read more

Probably the best yarn shop I've ever found. Besides beautiful yarns and high-quality materials, the shop provides expert instruction every day in many unusual projects. There is free help all day every day but Sunday at a big table where someone will resolve your mistakes or answer your questions. You can have private lessons, which are somewhat expensive. Instruction is given also in crochet, spinning, weaving, dying, and beadwork. They will even order lunch for you if you want to stay for hours! The place is spacious and bright. The first time I came into A Good Yarn I met a woman who had driven almost two hours to come here--I was amazed that anyone would drive that far to go to a yarn shop, but now I see why! The goal of this place is to make sure every customer leaves satisfied with his/her purchase and confident in tackling a new project. I am a new knitter and when I entered the store a month ago, a staff member, Carolyn, approached me and asked how she could help me. Not only did she expertly help me find the right yarn and needles, but she even gave me a free pattern that she happened to have and then proceeded to sit me down and get me started! I'm now on my third project and Carolyn is my "new best friend!" Sometimes it just takes her a few seconds to show me where I went wrong, and she is always patient, friendly, and kind. If she is not there, the rest of the staff are equally friendly and helpful. If the store is very busy, you may have to wait a few minutes, but you can always sit at the large community table and visit or work--usually there is another customer there to answer your question. If you are wanting to buy yarn or supplies, you may have to wait your turn, but when it is your turn, you get excellent service and they don't try to rush you. I highly recommend this store, for their wonderful inventory of beautiful yarns, for their friendliness and ability to help, and just for the fun and positive atmosphere there! read more

This store has an incredible selection of beautiful yarns. But their staff is only average on the knitting knowledge and their return policy is store credit only. So come for the yarn but know what and how much you need. Otherwise you end up being talked into extra skeins you don't need and end up with a store credit. read more
