Doc is the man! I have been coming here for years when I need a quick clean up! I have short hair, so sometimes you don't need anything too significant- just a clean up. It grows too fast to get a really expensive cut every time, you feel me. Doc is my guy when I'm not trying to spend an arm and a leg, but he does good work! This business is family run, Doc's parents also cut hair here. They run student specials for Washington University students, because they are just across the street. They also have tanning beds, I have not taken part, but the rates seem reasonable if you need to get some color. You should know that this is an old school, not-so-updated hair joint, but it more than does the trick. They also have an awesome selection on magazines if you ever have to wait! Things I love: -you can usually get in at the last minute or day of with little notice. -Doc is great when it comes to styling short hair. He is communicative and helpful. -Doc is friendly, inclusive, and generally warm towards everyone. -Affordable. read more

I've been going to A Cut Above the Rest for almost 2 years now. Doc does a great job on my haircuts! $20 for a haircut, beard trim, and shampoo. Truly a package deal for a great price. Doc is a great conversationalist and plays classic rock. Highly recommend. read more

A Cut Above the Rest - Tanning Beds Near Me - Saint Louis, Missouri

Great barber shop. I always ask for Doc. He gives a salon quality haircut at barbershop prices. I'm moving away and Doc'a haircuts are among the top things I will miss about St. Louis. read more

Don't go here! First, it's weird when you walk in. Not quite a barber shop, not quite a salon. Everything looks outdated and like there is not much activity there (which is no surprise after I got my haircut). The guy literally looked like he was trying to remember how to cut hair from the second he started. He started in with clippers and seemed really haphazard and like he had no method. After a few minutes he asked me how it looked, as if he was finished. It was a train wreck. It was long in the specific places I told him it needed trimmed. Everywhere else it was different lengths. I basically had to tell him what to do in each spot and with each cut of the scissors to get it in decent enough shape to walk out of there. I walked in with a nice head of hair that just needed a little trim. Now I have a rats nest of different lengths in different places. I'll have to go get another haircut as soon as possible to correct this mess. Waste of time and money. Avoid at all cost. read more

Nice place with a good parking area. Good hair cut with decent price. I schedule with Doc he is nice person, very friendly. It is a very nice place for the students, good place, near university, good price and have the students discount. read more

I came here with high hopes of finding somebody that knew how to cut Asian hair, and I think this place could be good if you just wanted a fade. I told him a couple inches off the top, inch and half off the sides, make it even. My guy literally had no clue what to do. At one point straight up asking me, "Tell me what to do man." Not comforting. He cut my hair dry and ran the clippers half assed (I have long random hairs out the sides now), finished in under 15 minutes, including a few minutes where he disappeared without saying a word. Wow. Hasty, sloppy and it looks like a shark took a bite out of my hair on the right side. Sweet. A couple notes, it was only $17 for a cut, and he did say as I was leaving to go home "see if it works out or you can come back" which I guess was nice, but why couldn't he just get it right the first time? Thank god for hair wax. read more

The experience there was a nightmare. The unlucky me have bumped into this "old gentleman", who looks like a experienced hairstylist in an old fashioned movie, but nothing like it in reality. He basically destroyed my hair by using a razor for all cuts, even ones on top of mu head. After I urged him to fix the problem with a scissor, he refused and called me ignorant. So I have paid the price, Hope those who see this comment won't have to, in the future. read more

Rarely will you meet a men's hair stylist who practices the profession with such a high level of knowledge and care for under $20. Doc is unmatched in his ability to execute and to explain cutting and styling difficult asian hair. For only $15, students can enjoy what non-students enjoy for $17. Doc also encourages the in-between haircut visits to clean up sideburns and the neck for free, of course. read more

A was in a bind recently, and needed a quick haircut. A Cut Above the Rest is right across the street from where I live. I scurried across the street to get a haircut and was surprised to see a $15 deal for students. I guess they took my word that I was a student because they never asked to see a student ID. It's $20 for a regular cut, which is about average for St. Louis. My cut was alright. I still had to make some minor adjustments, but for the most part it looked ok. My hair is pretty straightforward though, so it's not like I have layers that need to be cut. The guy cutting my hair (I believe was the owner) was really nice and seemed to appreciate the WashU business he was getting. He told me to invite my friends. I'll put it this way: I wouldn't stop anyone from going to get their haircut here, but I don't think I'd grab pom-poms to encourage it either. read more

Great place for a haircut. The new location is really nice. I've gotten my hair cut by a number of their stylists and have been pleased each time. Doc is great! read more

My Asian friend got his haircut here by Laura Sumner and it was one of the worst haircuts he's ever had. Maybe the lady didn't know how to cut Asian hair--apparently she tried to style it like a 50s style greaser (think James Dean) which was completely bizarre. The final touch was to randomly hack at great chunks of hair (to blend the cut?) but it just made Jia haircut look really sloppy and uneven. You can tell from his bangs now (a couple weeks after the cut) which vary in length by an inch! I got my hair cut here around Aug 2009 and it was underwhelming. An older man cut my hair; I don't know what his name was but he was nice enough. But I asked for a simple layering of my mid-length wavy hair and he tried his best. It was really simple and I think a friend probably could've given me the same cut in his/her own home. I guess you can't expect much more for a $15 haircut! read more

Doc was brilliant! My father is very particular about his hair and if he says Doc did a "good job", you can take it to the bank. Doc was courteous and polite. He did a damn good job of styling my father's wavy salt &pepper hair; which I know is not a easy job. Value for your money! read more

I gave this place two chances, and both times, I left the place unsatisfied. The service is horrible, and the owner hung up on the phone before I was finished talking. read more

Just returned from this place very unsatisfied with my hair cut. I have never been somewhere and been this unhappy with my results. Honestly my cut is pretty simple to do. I was not aware I could be unsatisfied with a hair cut until right now. I tipped the man because I knew I would not be returning there ever again. I rarely ever post on yelp, but this cut is just awful. My sides were left uneven. I gave clear hints that I was unsatisfied and the stylist disregarded my suggestions and just let me leave. Now, I am going to have to go and find another place on the very same day. Waste of time and money. read more

I got my hair cut here in march of 2011. a week later i noticed my scalp was itching really bad. it turns out i had lice. too much of a coincidence. also, my layers were uneven/ non existent in places and the lady cutting my hair smelled like musty cigarettes. read more

I rarely actually post a review, but this place was just unprofessional enough to force my hand. Barber continued to shorten my hair even after I let him know that he was taking off too much. I asked to speak to the manager after because I was extremely dissatisfied, only to find out that the barber was in fact the manager and wasn't willing to work with me to fix the situation. Find another spot. read more

I have been getting my hair cut here for more than 20 years...always does a great job. Rich, the owner is always there and ready to swing into action whenever I come in. If there is a client already there, the wait is never long. Way better than the chains. read more

Rich cut my boyfriend's hair and it is absolutely terrible. He wanted a simple trim to the style he already had, what he came out with was this left side completely shaved and the right side awkwardly faded. When I contacted the shop about how embarrassed he was and that the cut was awful, they offered no refund on the service. I 100% DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. GO ELSEWHERE. read more

Arrived and there was no waiting. got a hair cut and it was quick, the stylist did a horrible job. Left patches and was not friendly in anyway shape or form. Will never go there again. read more

Worst haircut I have ever received. If I could give less then one star I would have. I ask for a trim to maintain the length of my hair. The barber takes the trimmer to the side of my head and buzzed away. Months of growth gone! I came here because other reviews were so positive. I can't believe the mess the barber made. I would not recommend #ACutAboveTheRest to anyone. I paid for 3 cuts through GroupOn, they can keep the rest of the money. I won't be returning. What a hack. Any of the etiquette I have come to expect from a barber or salon was not provided. He left the cut hair on my face until I asked for it to be removed and I was handed a towel! Seriously? I paid GroupOn for a cut, wash and beard trim. The barber obviously was not informed of this offer his establishment set up with #GroupOn as I had to inform him of each aspect as if I was being unreasonable to expect these services. I was quite upset and when dealing with the redemption of the GroupOn I politely declined offering the barber my personal information. After he persisted I mentioned there is no need as I will not be returned and his reply was "have an awesome day". Tone need not be described. A years worth of grown ruined! read more

I had a similar experience described in others reviews... The barber cut my hair very quickly, and did a below the average work. It's not terrible, but I don't recommend... read more

This barbershop is AWFUL, anyone should avoid it at all cost. I ask a Number 2 on the side and about three quarter of inch on the top. The barber literally run the clipper through my head three times and told me it was finished. The whole process took less than 5 minutes. Overall poor communication and service. The worst 15 dollar I have ever spent in my entire life! read more

So terrible! Vary hasty, unprofessional and careless. He tried to cut my hair in under five minutes and didn't even bother to brush cut hair off my face. I don't recommend this place at all. read more

If your time is more important than your haircut I would go here. For a mere $15 you get a five minute sub-pair haircut that leaves random long hairs sticking out of your head like a beat-up 90s cartoon character. I've gone here multiple times only due to convenience, but now will easily walk an extra mile to get a haircut somewhere else. The owners are nice people, but have little attention to detail and work with the attitude that they just want to get you out of their salon. If you only have 5 minutes to spare and/or is dressing up to be a mad scientist for Halloween, this is your place. If you want actually want a haircut, go elsewhere. read more

I asked the manager to color my hair to its natural shade of blonde (which you could easily see at my roots), and he dyed it dark brown. He was incredibly incompetent as he dumped the dye on my head and proceeded to simply rub it in rather than evenly color throughout. He also got the dye all over my face and failed to wipe it off. Furthermore, he justified the shade by saying it would fade as I washed it and refused to compensate or reimburse me in any way. The facility itself was also very dirty. I understand not every salon focuses on coloring services, but if they don't, they should not accept customers who request such services just because they want the money. I don't like to think I'm too picky when it comes to hair as I frequently go to schools to have students gain experience working on my hair, but I have never had such an awful salon experience and would not recommend this place to anyone. read more
