I took a wheel throwing class with him and absolutely loved it!! I was having problems centering and with a few tweaks he totally changed how I approached the clay. His methodology is easier for me to grasp and retain. I think he would be an awesome instructor for any type of hand building, sculpture or wheel throwing! I've been glazing ceramics and doing some handbuilding since I was a kid, but always wanted to learn the wheel. I took one wheel class, had a blast and decided to sign up for an 8-week class- and then another. Dirk is an outstanding, patient teacher and a fun, upbeat guy. I learned so many new things from him and the other students, who had different skill sets at all levels. The studio is such a welcoming environment, I really looked forward to class as my outlet each week. If it were possible I would still be taking these classes, but I moved to Pittsburgh. With Dirk's teaching and advice I was able to set up a mini studio at home where I'm still handbuilding, throwing and glazing. But I still miss the great teaching and company at Dahl Arts. My kids love going there, have learned quite a lot of art history while making art projects that connect with the theme of the class. What stood out to me about Seattle Improv Classes, versus the other options, was the outcome-based messaging around building confidence, creativity, and developing one's ability to think on their feet. Seattle Improv Classes is not a templatized series of exercises; in fact, Chad (the owner and instructor) will customize every piece of the class to ensure everyone's unique needs are being addressed over the eight-week series. I had never taken improv classes before, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Each class is two hours in length, and you do a series of exercises in pairs or small groups. From telling bizarre stories on the spot, to miming someone's actions while you're trying to give a speech about a made-up topic, to singing (yes, even the shyest students sang in front of the group), you go on a creative journey that helps give you new insights into your day-to-day life. I don't feel like a changed person, but I do feel like I have more awareness of how to better communicate with others. From improving my small talk skills, to public speaking, I see significant improvement. There was great improvement with some of the quieter students as well. The 8 week course focuses on different social interactions and scenarios while incorporating the information that was gone over previous lessons. Chad is a very good instructor and will help you notice the unconscious social missteps you may be taking when interacting with others. The class helped me open up and I learned that the "Seattle freeze" can be by-passed rather quickly if you make a small effort. The studio is spacious and clean and they had wheels as well at the front along with offering unfinished pottery for those that wish to paint (loved the beer steins with bears).
