For those who don't live in Lancaster, PA; it's a "thing" and a good "thing" at that. There was an overwhelming response for Kissel Hill and so, that's where I vowed to be, on a Saturday, arriving at around 11:15. The barbecue masses, showed up at 10am. I figured this must have been the case, because when I arrived, there were no more leg/thigh combos, grilled sliced potatoes - sold out, except for one, which we snagged (the last potato) and grilled carrots - gone. If you plan on going to an Amish barbecue stand, get there EARLY. The consensus (among myself & hubby), potato - under cooked, chicken lacked essential flavors derived from smoke and brining, meat wasn't as tender as was expected, completely out of napkins and forks?? Oh crap! Come on Kissel, I know this isn't your first rodeo. Some Amish bbq stands include whoopie pies, this was not one of them. Sadly, even the roll was not up to par; it was stale. Oh man. No worries, Lancaster County has lots of contenders out there and I aim to try all of them. There is small adjoining market with a ton of apples, onions, potatoes, pie filling, pickles, noodles, baked goods, flowers, dairy items and more.

The veritable cherry on top of their cornucopia of fruits, vegetables, jarred foods, baked goodies, pretzels, popcorn, candies, and frozen foods is their Whoopie Pie Festival, which we attended today. The Festival runs on Feb. 26-28 & March 5-7 between 9am - 4pm. Essentially, you can create Your Own Whoopie Pie for $4 each, 4 or more at $3.50 each, and 12 or more $3 each. Here's how it works - make your customized selections of one of 12 cookies, one of 11 frostings, and one of 7 toppings, and Brecknock will build your pie. I went full Elvis mode and selected banana cookies, peanut butter frosting, and chocolate chip toppings around the circumference. We had a great time at Brecknock -making our Whoopie pies, playing a whoopie pie trivia game, and picking up a few odds and ends for us and friends. PRO TIP Hats off to Brecknock for their generosity and hospitality. They had free samples everywhere- whoopie pie wedges, pretzels, popcorn, and all sorts of goodies. If I lived close by I would come here every week. The amish couple was so nice and the prices were great. We bought a lot of things. Some highlights from our purchases were pumpkin cinnamon buns, fresh made salsa, fresh produce, potato chips cooked in lard, and local made pretzels. I wanted to buy eggs too bc they had chickens right by the parking lot. But after wandering around the indoor and outdoor store I forgot to go back to the egg section. (so dumb bc the store is small). They also had tons of varieties of pumpkins outdoors for $2 but they weren't sure which ones were roastable/edible so I didn't end up buying any. My boyfriend loved the family dog that was hanging around outdoors by the pumpkins.

Their groceries…read moreinclude a selection of fresh local fruit and veggies, farm fresh eggs and milk (both pasteurized and unpasteurized) which come from their farm. They also offer a fresh local ice cream, and other homemade baked goods that are delicious. Simply pull up to the farm and give a quick toot of the horn; and the lovely family that owns it will come and help you out quickly. Iit isn't fancy, but it doesn't get any fresher than fresh from the farm. The sharp cheddar cheese, the ice cream, and the milk are 3 of my favorites in the whole wide world! Bring a cooler to keep them cold on your way home.

They take credit cards, checks, or cash. Usually the fruit is about a dollar or two less than if you buy it in a market because you're picking your own. They told me they do have to use some sort of treatment for the plants to avoid fungus but try to use as little as possible.

It is the very good quality and taste of berries I enjoyed as well as personal touch by the owner of the farm. They still have some strawberry left, it is sweet and very fragrant, it is almost like in a famouse Swedish movie " Strawberry Patch", also in the movie is a wild strawberry. We enjoyed our red and black raspberries which are abundant and delicious this year. If you are a bluberry fan, you should come next week for the delicious treat! Bluberry is almost ready; sweat and sour, big and appetizing. The rain did not spoil our experience and a beautiful rainbow was like a prize we received from God. Come to Lititz to enjoy the farm and plenty of wonderful berries. I also collected some berry leaves to make my teas.
