Behind the counter was a teenage Amish girl who was watching over her adorable small siblings. The small market had a large variety of seasonal apples, premade processed jarred fruit products, local honey, and other "farmery" groceries. Outside we saw the children's father driving a horse-drawn wagon piled to the brim with the next round of apples to process. The drive to the orchard winds through the countryside and we enjoyed passing the one-room Amish school houses where children were walking and scooting back to their homes. Iit isn't fancy, but it doesn't get any fresher than fresh from the farm. The sharp cheddar cheese, the ice cream, and the milk are 3 of my favorites in the whole wide world! Tables are provided for lunch or snacks, but we had to wait a few minutes because none were available. At Lancaster Central, you can expect a friendly atmosphere in this beautiful historic building, where the local community shops and supports. I usually secure parking via parking apps at the Hager lot or one of the two nearby parking garages.

That's because on our visit, three of the parking garages bordering the market were full, and by the time we found street parking (you'd better polish up your parallel parking skills) it was close to a 30-minute stroll to this historic landmark. The market goes way back--all the way to 1730--when local farmers rolled into town with whatever they'd harvested and sold it in what was then just an open field in the center of the growing community. Today, it is home to over 65 vendors selling fruits & vegetables, meats, poultry, fish & cheeses, fresh baked bread, pretzels, pierogis, handmade dishes, smoothies, flowers, hot coffee, sweet treats, and even pickles. We had a blast wandering through the crowded aisles and picking up a few odds and ends. If you love jerky and meat sticks (as I do), you will walk out with a ton of goodies (as I did).

It is filled with fresh bread, baked goods and most amazing pies, fresh fruit and vegetables. But all of it hides this amazing sandwich shop that has one of the best Philly Cheese Steaks. It is gooey with melted cheese and if you ask for chopped hot peppers... you can get the perfect blend of banana peppers and jalapeño peppers to get the kick! Had these pints in the freezer at home for a week, and they remained consistently smooth -- no chunks of ice crystals that form and make scooping difficult. We also bought the apple cider and the pressed citrus juice. All very crisp and fresh, and never from concentrate. They also bottle their own root beer! Can't wait to visit again next summer.
