Listen, it's been a LONG 2020-21. Like a lot of folx, I was stuck at home, vacations canceled, diving into home improvement projects left and right. My biggest project, an in-ground pool.
I live in Crescent Hill, where all the lots are the same size, and my backyard bumps up against a neighbors. Installing a fiberglass pool meant giant equipment-- and since my garage blocks access to my backyard, I was at the mercy of my immediate next door neighbor for access.
Luckily, my neighbor is the absolute best! She's the kind of neighbor that you think of as family. She graciously allowed my contractor to drive dump trucks, diggers, movers and my giant 37'x16' pool down her asphalt driveway!
Welp, you may have guessed, but that equipment is HEAVY! It wrecked the crap out of her driveway, even sinking it down almost a foot in some places. Still, she allowed me complete my entire project, with the agreement that I'd make sure everything was fixed following the project.
After 8 long months of waiting on the pool contractor and fence to be installed, it was finally time to shop paving companies. She wanted asphalt. I poured through Yelp reviews and BBB ratings, calling everyone with good reviews and an A-rating.
The first vendor quoted me $4k, which sounded pretty reasonable. My neighbor's best friend is a realtor, who highly recommended A1 Paving. They didn't have any Yelp reviews, but I trusted her recommended and gave them a call.
The owner was quick to respond. After chatting on the phone, we scheduled an estimate. He was really friendly and knowledgeable, answering all my questions and never making be feel rushed. During the meeting. I learned that he personally goes with the crew to every job they do. I was even more impressed that his quote was $300 less than the competition. After confirming with my neighbor, I told him I was ready to schedule.
The construction industry is SLAMMED right now. I have dealt with contractors, electricians, plumbers, fence folx, concrete guys and just about everyone in-between over the last year. Many of them have been really frustrating to deal with and terrible at communication. Not A1. It took about 5 weeks to get to my job, but he was great at communicating where I was on the list. He also explained that he was getting to customers in order and that rain had caused loads of delays.
Last Thursday, he sent me a text saying he'd had a cancellation. He asked if he could do the driveway the following day. I said yes!
They showed up on time and got right to work. They trimmed back bushes and weeds that were in the way and worked really cleanly and quickly. I think it was about 4 hours, start to finish. That includes the time it took to turn on the water hose and make sure water was indeed running away from the house.
I brought my neighbor outside to sign off before they left. She was VERY pleased, as was her realtor friend who saw the drive later. They used her driveway and caution tape to block the driveway. They also made sure her gate was re-installed and at a position that didn't drag or let her dog out.
The work was impressive, but even more impressive was the owner's grace and compassion. I lost my job right before the install, so my cash flow was low. I was relying on my Dad to write the check, but he was in the ICU with covid at the time. The owner very graciously asked if my Dad was okay and told me he'd text me his home address so I could mail him the check the next week when I could see my Dad.
I know that A1 is a small business. I know they probably rely on customers paving at the time of service. He could have demanded that I put the charge on my credit card and pay the extra 2.75% fee for using a card, but he didn't. He extended compassion along with a fantastic looking, and less expensive driveway. I will never forget that, and I will forever refer folx looking for an asphalt driveway to A1. Great work, and good people. Kindness matters. read more
