Fuel City, eat your heart out - you have some credible competition. King Mart, a Phillips…read more66-branded filling station/convenience store in this Navarro County seat recently added a counter, some tables and cooking equipment to produce muy delicioso street-style Mexican food - tacos, burritos and quesadillas. Hamburgers are also in the menu. There is a lot of pass-through traffic between Dallas and Houston, so the owner decided to install a lunch counter. In talking with the owner, he admitted to never having been to Fuel City in Dallas to try their tacos. Instead, he brought in a local cook to develop their own menu. The meats - carne asada, barbacoa, pollo, lengua, etc. are all fresh. They also make their own salsas - hot habenero, mild red and mild green - and keep them in a warmer. I ordered the carne asada tacos on corn tortillas (flour is also available). You can watch as the cook dips the tortillas and then fries them up on the grill. They then place a generous amount of meat, onions and cilantro on top. They are served with lime wedges. The steak was seasoned nicely, dripping juices and very tender. At $1.39 each, the tacos are a tasty steal. This place does not have table cloths, silverware or china. Be prepared to sit at a small counter with locals or grab one of the few bench-style tables.

An absolute MUST STOP along I-35 and now my second visit to West, Texas (not West Texas, which is…read morecompletely different). I've been to the other one and now I am here. And while the other one is great and fabulous, this one is one star better. A huge selection of baked goods, coffee, decor, clothing, drinks and more. The Kissing Pig Cafe has so many food options, too! Mrs. K. has not had a kolache in years and she's now pescatarian which presents certain challenges. It would be awesome if they had some kolaches with just cheese or were sweet, so while I had one with ham and cheese and one with sausage in cheese, she was at least able to enjoy a strawberry and cream danish as well as the always awesome poppyseed kolache. It's possible that a pecan square was purchased for later consumption, too. The self-serve coffee was great and we enjoyed all of this inside at a comfortable table. And after that, more shopping. So much great stuff to choose from here and very, very clean restrooms. If you're overwhelmed by that massive baked goods counter, just ask for recommendations. They'll get you sorted for sure! This is a full on grocery store. Inside they have a restaurant which is really like three restaurants combined. They have a wine and beer center they have a butcher shop. I even had one or two of them asked me if I wanted any assistance with anything and when even asked if I wanted him to take any of the pictures so that I could be in them.
