GurkhaChef Nepalese Restaurant

GurkhaChef Nepalese Restaurant

I've been doing a fair bit of business in Aberdeen for longer than I care to mention and I've…read morescoured the dining scene throughout the years, but somehow, I have managed to completely overlook this little beauty of a restaurant. Aberdeen is notoriously expensive, and I've been to many eateries in this city where I have paid over the odds for poor quality food. However, Gurkha Chef most certainly does not fall into that category. Nepal is the land of the Himalayas, Mount Everest and home to the great Lord Buddha, so I thought to myself, for a small country they have some pretty awesome things, therefore the food must be good, right? Strange thought process, but hey, these are the weird things that go on inside my head. I knew there were some difference between Indian food and Nepalese so I wanted to try it out first hand. Also there are hardly any Nepalese restaurants in Scotland so when I saw this existed in Aberdeen I jumped at the chance to try it. The place doesn't really look like much from outside, so you'd be forgiven if you though it looks a bit, well, crappy. However, do not be fooled. Gurkha Chef has plenty of rustic charm with some amazing food to be found. Please do read on.... For starters I went for the the classic Nepalese dish of Momo, which is a meat filled, steamed dumpling. Its fair to say that Nepalese food has some Chinese influences and this was similar to dumplings I have had in Chinese restaurants. The difference on this occasion where their MAMMOTH size. After tackling these four massive dumpling beasts, served with a nice chutney sauce I was feeling almost full, unbelievably. They were really succulent and, as mentioned, generously filled, very enjoyable indeed! For my main I was torn between the Nepalese style curries, mostly featuring lamb and the tandoori dishes. I wasn't in a saucy mood so went for the grilled Chicken Tikka Kalimiri, which was excellent. A double skewer of succulent chicken marinated in spiced yoghurt and black peppercorns, served with mint chutney, pilau rice, potatoes & peas, sauce and salad. Its fair to say my meal was MASSIVE. Having paid under £4 for my starter and under £10 for my main meal I honestly was expecting some sort of catch. Not only was the food top notch, but I myself, a self-confessed greedy get, could barely finish. (Naturally I did of course finish my meal, but it was quite the struggle). The Nepalese people are said to be some of the friendliest in the word and indeed the hospitality shone through on the night. I can see this place becoming a strong favourite of mine while up in the North-East.

Tucked away behind Union square is a little gem. Due to its location, it's footfall isn't great, I…read moreshared the restaurant with only 1 other table, but the food was beautifully traditional and well cooked. I tried one of the more Nepalese rather than Indian starters and it was spiced perfectly. The prawn curry I had for main was solid but nothing overly special. If you don't mind a quiet atmosphere, with friendly service and great value authentic cuisine. This is for you. Starters wee under a fiver and mains between 7-14.

DO NOT USE The Everest Restaurant I placed an online order…read morewith Just Eat early afternoon on 31 December for delivery at 7pm. The order was acknowledged by the restaurant at 5.30pm and around 6.50pm the Just Eat site was updated that the food was on its way. By 8pm still no delivery, went onto the Just Eat site to advise delivery was late, received a text a couple of minutes later to advise that it would be delivered at 8.15pm. At 9pm the food still hadn't been delivered and despite calling the restaurant over 30 times they didn't answer their phone or the line was busy. My friend Louise ended up driving us to the restaurant to be told that the food was on its way. I got given a bottle of wine to apologise and pushed towards the door to get us to leave. It's now around 9.30pm and we told them that we were not leaving as the restaurant closes at 10pm and there would be no way of getting our food then! We told them that we called them numerous times but no answer or lines busy and he gestured towards 6 telephones on the bar, Louise phoned the restaurant right in front of his face and none of the phones rang! An older gentleman then rang the delivery driver who said that he was on his way to mine after his next delivery. We arrived back to mine at 9.40pm and the driver was 10 minutes after us. 2 x poppadoms, salad and my vegetable chilli garlic dish were missing and the food was cold. Also when we were there a lad came in to find out where his order was - it was supposed to be delivered at 5pm! I will never use this restaurant again. Such a shame as the service used to be really good.

Outstanding food, service and atmosphere. We happened by here after other options fell through and…read moreconsider it a fortunate happening. The chicken momo (dumplings) and duck chhoila starters were flavorful and fresh. The momo were nice chicken and vegetable dumplings served with a mildly spiced curry sauce. The chhoila had mustard seed in it which, when drizzled with the accompanying lemon, was cut nicely and gave off great flavors. We also had the achari chicken, Everest mix special, and dansak chicken. Each came separately in lovely metal dishes with unique sauces and a heating tray underneath to keep them warm throughout the meal. The meal also came with some of the best naan we've had and some very good saffron pilau rice. We cleaned our plates and left very satisfied and happy after a night that began a little unpleasant from having the other dinner options not work out. The staff was very attentive and engaging without being overbearing or hovering. They seemed to have perfect management in telling them when to come to the table. The manager was very professional and exceptionally helpful. This is a fairly new restaurant, the manager said they've only been open four weeks. I would get here fast before they become booked solid. Thank you to The Everest waitstaff, bar staff and kitchen for such a wonderful and memorable experience!
