I was getting deep tissue massages but no one could help with my pain, knots and state of fight or flight. They said I had ice shoulders I went to Body Balance by Marybel scared and ashamed of my body; being a big girl. Despite my smile she felt my sadness. Unfortunately, that was not the case - her pressure was so hard it was uncomfortable and not relaxing at all, and at times she didn't use enough oil or lotion and was pulling my skin. Before we started the massage I told her what my issue was but it was not addressed and I had to ask her to work on it before turning me over. I'm almost sorry that I did - the pressure and technique she used was hard and vigorous when it needed to be slow and deep. As a massage therapist myself with over 20 years experience I know there is a difference between deep tissue massage and just being hard - real deep tissue massage needs to slow to be able to work through tissue rather than just vigorously pushing in really hard; I felt like she wasn't reading my body at all and in my experience you can tell if you're paying attention. I was looking forward to a Swedish deep tissue massage that would help me feel better, not a Thai massage - I don't like Thai massage and if that's what I wanted I would've gone to a Thai place and paid less. I ended up leaving feeling beat up (she literally pounded on me a couple of times), not relaxed and still in pain with added pain of feeling bruised by the super hard pressure. My neck/shoulder/arm issue is still bothering me today, along with still feeling bruised. The good part of the session was the amazing stretches she does - Johana is tiny but mighty and puts a lot into her work. I was apprehensive in doing this review because Johana is a professional, sweet lady with great positive energy and is skilled - with her stretches being her strong suit; that's why I gave her 3 stars. You get 1 hr jacuzzi/sauna, 1hr massage and a 1 hour facial. This place was very relaxing, the staff was great and friendly. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating was because our massage was only about 40 mins long. I also didn't like the rough towel cleanse that they do removing the lotion. I would much rather keep the lotion on my body then have it scrubbed down. Other than that, I left the place feeling great! Relaxed and I'm definitely coming back.

Their menu is very simple which is good if you're not a massage expert and don't want to be overwhelmed. Plenty of parking. On a December weekday, the place was quiet and thankfully there were no interruptions during my hour long massage. There is an area with various seats for those who want a foot massage. The full body massages take place in private rooms with hooks and a basket for your items. The place felt clean. This is NOT how you treat a paying customer who is willingly tipping a decent amount for a mid grade Thai massage. This is not massage envy or Brooke Williams in which the masseuses there would have probably been content with a $20 tip. I don't care how much they get paid nor is it my responsibility to pay their wages if they're not getting paid enough. $60 base ans $20 tip is more than sufficient for the service provided. If you're going to be paying 90-100$ for a massage, do yourself a favor and go to a legit massage spot like Massage Envy and get your moneys worth in service & customer service as well. I had my massage done at his home studio in Burbank and it was very clean. It's been very difficult for me to find a good massage and someone that will actually get my knots out.
