What do "Spy Hunter", "Gauntlet", "Hyper Sports" & "Kung Fu Master"
all have in common? Just this: they were all in the Hall-of-Fame video game lineup @ this very 7-11.
Sometime in the 90s, while I was away @ college, it apparently became passe and apparently unprofitable for stores to continue carrying these games. Such a shame-- there's but little question we spent a lot more of our scarce moolah at the 7-11, while we got maximum mileage out of our limited quarters, never tiring of the games we got so good at.
I was filled w/pride and insanely irrepressible joy for approximately 5 minutes when the owner offered me a job there on the spot one fine summer day.At the time, I thought there couldn't be a more perfect job! But then the owner realized I was only 14 (Why oh why did I tell him my actual age? What was I thinkin'??? ;p ), and had to rescind the offer. I wanted to work, dangit! But let this show that even though we were constantly up there playing the games, we were apparently not nuisances like some of the other kids our age frequenting this store. While those kids were busy drinking, doing drugs, and impregnating the VERY lovely ladies of No Po (yes that's sarcasm), we were content playing these video games, when we weren't doing sports, scouts, school, or yes, I have to admit, there was a D & D phase in there, as well, for a very short while. I think every one in my group owes at least a little of their successes later in life to this 7-11, for helping us keep it clean and keep 'er classy during those quintessential formative years....
Alas, w/o any video games, I cannot bring myself to award a 5 star rating as it now stands. Were this 1985, 100 stars wouldn't be too many....! read more
