This is an amazing driving school as I highly recommend going here. I passed my road test on the first try at Kapahulu (town) at 2pm and it's truly because of this school! The class is very educational as I learned so many things and tips to be a better driver. The teacher made the class even more enjoyable by keeping us entertained throughout the lesson. For the behind the wheel schedules, the instructors were very knowledgeable and gave me little pointers and procedures to groom myself for my test. The variety of them (shout out to Mari and Mel) gave me a different learning experience each time. My appointments was at 2pm at Kapahulu Road testing and Mari meet up with me at 12:30 to take me around the route and correct my wrongs before I took the actual test. Doesn't respond to emails or calls. Very unprofessional!! Behind the wheel is very difficult to schedule because times are limited unless you don't mind your child missing school to attend driving courses. We ended up getting a drivers license without driving with this company because my child turned 18 before we could even schedule any behind the wheel lessons. I've tried multiple times to ask for a refund but it seems Melissa or whoever is the owner is avoiding me and doesn't respond. I'm debating if it's worth it to go through small claims court for the portion of the price we paid since we never used any of the driving hours. I DO NOT recommend this place! He was very disappointed and frustrated because he had successfully completed the Driver's Education and BTW requirements with another popular driving school. Melissa responded immediately to my query to get a better idea of what happened and what we needed (additional BTW lessons) and told me that one of her driving instructors would be in contact shortly to arrange lesson dates and times. This driving instructor turned out to be Mel, and she is truly a blessing. She's caring and supportive and encouraging and really taught my son to be a better, safer, and more confident driver. She worked with us in finding times that worked with a busy student's schedule. She kept me (the stressed out mom) in the loop by texting and calling. The other guys failed to do that. A lot of time was spent getting my son more familiar and comfortable in Kapolei, where he would take his road test. When it came to finding a road test, 5-0 Driving School helped me out with that too! They worked their magic and were able to find a road test slot closer than the late-March appointment I had scheduled back in October. My daughter, Chloe, had a tremendous experience learning from Melissa, who was super patience and positive. So when my son, Conor, turned 18 we decided to give them a call again. Conor learned the intricacies of driving under the tutelage of Mari. She was knowledgeable, patient and understanding and trained him in all the nuances of what he needs to do when driving as well as going over the road test course and explaining what the examiners are looking at. Since my wife and I are just busy with work, we signed him up for the 5-0 Driving School's Road Test Service because they provided a pick up/drop off service as well as usage of their car to the road test appointment. It was such a relief knowing that the 5-0 Driving School was there to guide my son on what to do. When my son took his 1st road test, he didn't pass because he didn't do a couple of head checks, parked a little too far from the curb and made an error when making a left turn. We just chalked it up to him being really nervous. On the 2nd try, it was the error of not making some head checks and going a little into the next lane when making a right turn. He was again really nervous. He had the same examiner again who I found out from our student help that she was dubbed "The Dragon Lady" because she was known to fail a lot of young kids. Got my driving license...on the second try...my fault, not that of my instructors at 5-0. There is an initial class of video instruction mostly. Melissa and Mal - owners of the school - are thoughtful and you can tell they want you to drive but be safe and abide by the rules of the road. Melissa was my initial instructor and , in talking with her sister Lisa, she said I had come a long way in several months. Yes, previously I had spent more time in the back seat than even the passenger seat...so the interior of the car was just as new as driving on the road. My primary instructor was Lisa and she teaches adult student drivers. She is flexible, giving me more time to drive on certain days Also, other students were included, so that 2 students could pay for typical time period of 1.5 hours but as it was 2 student drivers we both got to split a 3 hour drive time: a 2 for 1 deal. We usually drove on Thursdays and I learned as much as I laughed...she is very personable. Lisa helped me with my driving test appointments and getting my license by providing the car, with proper paperwork, and being of general assistance and support. I was not ready to take that next step in finding a driving school for our only son because it reminded me just how much he's growing. When looking for a private driving school, I was a bit apprehensive. I came across 5- Driving School and I'm so happy I did! Registration was a breeze. You sign up based on availability. They also have a waitlist when the classes get full and they'll be in touch when there is an opening. I love that we were able to pick the dates that worked for our son as he had on-going sports and we were also off island during one of his virtual sessions. Melissa F. was very accommodating and taught the classes where my son understood. For his behind the wheel (BTW), he was most excited about. I was not. However, his BTW instructor, Mel P. made it such an amazing experience for him. I truly loved the fact that he had a 1 on 1 session with her. I heard from another parent that sent her daughter to another driving school that her daughter had 2 classmates in the backseat while she was doing her BTW with her instructor. I don't know how I would feel about that because if I were my son, it's already a lot to be behind the wheel with my instructor but to have an audience too? No thanks! Anyways, Mel P. taught in a way that my son would finish his session and wouldn't stop talking about it. What he did, what he learned, what route he took, etc...it was nice seeing how my son's face would light up. Mel P. also gave me updates after each session (4 total) and I loved that. I loved hearing feedbacks on what his strongpoints were and what we should continue to work on. For his road test, Mel P. was unable to bring my son because she had a personal matter to tend to but let me tell you...she made sure another instructor was present on the day of his road test to show him the route and to get accustom to the car that he'll be taking his road test in and to make the whole experience a memorable one. Instructor Liza F. was the one who met us an hour half before his road test and showed him the possible routes, made him practice his parking (parallel and reverse) and encouraged him that he could do it. And he did just that. He aced his road test and the first people that knew were all of his instructors. I went from being pretty terrible (think nearly running pedestrians over on a crosswalk) to passing my road test on the first try in July with close to zero marks. My son found this school online and there are two places they have the classroom part -Honolulu & Kapolei. Kapolei fills up fast so get on it. My son took the Honolulu because it fit for his scheduled road test by his birthday. Classes on the week days are 3 hours and on Saturdays they are 4hours but they will text you if they end early. Both ladies are awesome and will work with you on schedules and even payments if you need to break it down, they will work with you. For the driving portion, they will pick up at either your home or possibly your school. They were very knowledgeable and kept the parents in the know. My son drove with both Melissa and Mel and he said they were both patient and nice. He also got to drive with several different vehicles which was also a plus to me. I registered in the Adult Combo at 5-0 as an adult driver who hadn't driven at all since getting her license in another country 13 years ago. I had tried re-learning, with my husband teaching me, but I remembered almost nothing and couldn't get a good grasp of the size and position of the car. Though my husband is patient, I realized I would greatly benefit from a professional giving me some formulaic guidance (e.g. the steps and angles needed for parallel parking, where the wheels are in relation to your sightline, etc.). The 4-hour video class already helped a lot with the rules of the road and car position. Then I took 4 BTW lessons with Princess. Booking appointments with her was super easy (through an online calendar), and she was extremely patient, laid-back, and kind. I was really nervous and diffident, and her attitude really helped. After just 4 lessons, I felt much more at ease. I'd say I drive pretty well and safely now :) Money extremely well spent! I recommend 5-0 to anyone who has to (re)learn how to drive. I still can't believe the unprofessional Things that transpired here. My son, who is a senior in high school had two driving lessons with Mari. We don't know if there's something genuinely wrong with this woman? Or what but before the first session began she had to cancel and reschedule because her car broke down before. Not the best first impression when you're trusting your child's safety with someone. It turned out that ended up being the least of our concerns. After the rescheduling twice of the first appointment due to issues on her end, our son came home from his first driving experience and told us all about how his instructor was talking to him about the accident her and her boyfriend were in, and how she suffered a miscarriage. My husband and I were baffled to say the least. Not to mention horrified and disgusted that this is how a "professional" company would act. We called the company and received so much defensiveness it was alarming. To the point it was very strange they were defining their employee. It prompted us to ask, "are you related to this driver?!" sure enough. They were. Our son is incredibly honest and has and would never make up such an insane story. He was just as shocked and uncomfortable with telling us. We cancelled all remaining appointments and spoke to the owner. She wanted a meeting with our child! I absolutely said there was NO chance that woman was ever going near our child again and talking to us is more than sufficient enough. She didn't like that answer, and continued to act like it was no big deal. Hands down this is the strangest review I've ever written for a company but I truly hope that driving instructor ends up getting some professional help, and a warning to all you parents looking to entrust your children with someone emotionally stable.
