Chuck is the best mechanic I've known throughout the three-plus decades I've owned cars. Since '96 or so (not exactly sure), I've looked to Chuck to take care of nearly all of my vehicles, even though he markets his business as a 4wd specialty shop. Nearly every time I make a visit to 4Play, I not only see 4WDs in the queue but also a variety of classics, including hot rods (50s Chevy's, 60s Mustangs, etc.). For nearly a decade, Chuck took great care of my '66 Mustang Fastback; now, he's babying my '89 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and I wouldn't take that classic vehicle anywhere else. About Chuck: he's an analytical guy (not at all unlike many of the software engineers that I work with in my high-tech job) who wants to understand the root of the problem - and not just what the problem is (vs. "symptoms") but also how it came to be a problem at all. He's really fantastic, and the only reason I haven't taken all of my vehicles to Chuck is due to the complexity with diagnosing issues with my later-model Volvos. It's just not feasible for Chuck pay for Volvo's software subscription when he rarely works on Volvo vehicles. Great guy, honest guy, gets to the root of the problem *and* what's causing the problem. 100% would refer him to others. read more

Chuck has done work for my jeep for almost 2 years now. He's very honest and does amazing work. Just recently Jeep dealership screwed me over with a part and was trying to charge me 2,500 for a part that they messed up and mis diagnosed. Called 4 Play Automotive for a 2nd opinion on my failing rear differential in my Toyota FJ cruiser and Chuck seemed very knowledgeable about it and took the time to talk to me about the problem. I decided to have Chuck inspect my vehicle and he came to the same conclusion as the other mechanic, but provided me way more information about the problem. He replaced the carrier assembly ahead of schedule and the FJ drove great afterwards. It has now been a couple thousand miles, with new differential fluid and everything still works great. What can I say? 4 Play Automotive is as good as it gets. I bought a 1988 Jeep Cherokee and to my disappointment it turned out that he Jeep had many issues. I shopped around and spoke with many mechanics and Chuck Frear over at 4 Play surprised me with his 4x4 knowledge and abilities. Combine the previous comment with the fact that 4 Play Automotive came highly recommended by the folks at Rubicon Express, so I had to give them a try. I was first relieved to find that at 4 Play, they don't beat around the bush or tell you whatever they think you may want to hear. They are honest and to the point. I had to have a new motor installed and they did a fantastic job! I also found out that Chuck (the owner) is a real Jeep expert! Ask anyone around Sacramento and they will tell you that Chuck is the man when it comes to Jeeps. But they don;t just work on Jeeps. I was given Chucks contact information several years ago by a fellow IH Scout owner as a service mechanic that could be trusted. I've taken my Scout to Chuck for major upgrades to the transmission, transfer case and differentials. I've also taken my old Chevelle to Chuck to have him do the differential upgrades I wanted and have recommended him to co-workers for their kids cars. Chuck is honest, completely competent, and will freely discuss all options of repair and upgrade available to you. I restore and maintain my own vehicles but when I need a higher level of expertise I take it to Chuck. He's worth the drive up the hill. read more

Chuck is amazing. I recently had another company make mistakes on the last two oil changes i had them perform. Chuck services my boyfriends families cars so i decided i would give him a shot hoping he would be able to fix what the last company did. Not only did he fix the mistakes but he took the time to walk me through exactly what he was going to be doing, he gave me options along with pricing so i knew roughly what i would be getting myself into. I felt so comfortable with him that i had him replace my front breaks, rotors, and change my transmission fluid while he had my car. His pricing is VERY reasonable.
