The even had street vendors, entertainers, and lots of family fun. The festival had lights on the roof of buildings and a fun show on the stage. This was the debut of the "new" trees on post oak boulevard, and they did not disappoint. They were 20 feet tall and made of twisted stainless steel with 249 LED lights on different points of the "trees". They were a very a modern take on the "Christmas Tree" and they were beautiful. The trees and fireworks were meant to be lit at 7:00 P.M., it didn't exactly go as planned, but nobody seemed to mind. Once the firework display began, the crowd was amazed, including myself. The uptown post oak tree lighting event was a sight to see and I would highly recommend.

If you've lived in Houston at least 10 years, you should attend this annual event at least once. Pros: - There is lots of parking even if you don't arrive early. The flyer also has a map of the free parking areas. - The music is good. - There are some booths, one of which lets you throw a ball through some holes in the back and you could win t-shirts, stress balls, etc... - There are police directing the flow of traffic which made leaving the area smooth. - There are lots of food options (albeit mostly unhealthy carnival type food). - The other attendees are polite (We only saw one drunk guy helped by his friends. Alcohol was not available at the event so I'm not sure how that happened.) - There are lots of places to sit (e.g. along the curb, concrete garden walls of surrounding businesses, etc...) I brought a chair for my mother, though. - The terrific fireworks show at the end was choreographed to music. - The emcees did a good job entertaining. - It was held in a fun area so you could walk around if you were waiting for the fireworks. - Some booths sold hot chocolate for only $2 when the temperatures were in the low 50s. - The food was not overpriced (except that bbq food truck selling turkey legs for $10 each). Cons: - They advertised food trucks but other than a bbq one, they were mostly generic fair food tents serving turkey legs ($8!), hot dogs, corn dogs, nachos, fajitas, sandwiches, tortas, funnel cakes, etc... - Lots of vendors were selling flashing colorful light toys that may make parents buy junk for their kids, wasting money. - I didn't see any portable restrooms. - There were strobes flashing lights. - The diesel-fueled generators powering some of the food tents were really loud and smelly.

Not to be confused with Sweet N Low Land, or Agave Land, which is more naturally flavoured…read more Sugar Land (yes, two words) is a hell of a lot better than it used to be in terms of things to do and reasons to visit, and I think they've been actively working on that. The large non-Caucasian population here - despite it being a rich burb - helps a lot with the variety and authenticity of some of the food, boba and desserts. If it weren't for the downright nasty attitudes a lot of the drivers - especially the ones in big trucks - have, and some of the shop owners here too, who hate each other and wage war on each other openly on Facebook and Yelp, often pretending to be angry customers and trashing each other, then I would like the area much better. It's a great destination to go for Boba, and has much better traffic than Houston, but I'll take Houston over Sugar Land every time, and the 69 freeway (known to locals as 59) can be a real nightmare. And no matter what they do to Sugar Land to try and make it like The Woodlands - which is not something I'd want my town to be like - with cleaner areas and more space than Houston, it just won't ever have the charm of Houston, and will still be a burb in the end. Whereas places like Montrose and Midtown and the wonderful Chinatown and Hillcroft and Koreatown and Mexican neighborhoods of Houston are the real heartbeat of this region, and the reason to come down here. Still, if you see Houston as a whole - as I do - then Sugar Land and its area (Stafford, Richmond, Rosenberg, Missouri City), are a wonderful element of the region, a massive suburban sprawl with a lot of hidden food gems, especially along Hwy 6. Also it's less polluted here than in the South-East or East or North-East suburbs, for sure. Tornado Burger is a highlight, and Mama Le's is one of the best places in the entire region for both food and drinks, not to mention service. Feng Cha down here is run by very good friends who also live around here, and there's a nice Kung Fu Tea location too, and wonderful people running the Ding Tea location.
