Gourmet Burger spot in Playa? Word?! Say no more! We were so excited to check out 3XL, seeing as it is the only place of its kind in this area that we've come across so far. It is in an accessible location across from Walmart, close to the central plaza, which made for an easy find. On a hot, Saturday afternoon after biking around a bit, a fat burger and fries sounded positively delightful! So what did we think of this spot? Let's get straight to the point... Atmosphere - 3XL offers casual indoor dining, similar to any fast food burger joint. Tables were spaced out and social distancing with enhanced cleaning was in place. Rating 4/5 Service - Although it feels like a fast food joint, you are still "waited" upon. Menus are digital and not very clear in regards to what toppings are included with burgers. Our server was not extremely helpful in explaining their "XL" concepts to us and never checked on us after we ordered. Rating 3/5 Food - 3XL apparently charges extra for all toppings outside of the usual lettuce, tomato and onion. Totally disappointing as the burgers you see on their menu are misleading since everything on the burger is actually an extra charge. At $5-$10 a pop, these burgers by themselves are not cheap! 3XL states that burgers are made fresh and they even make their own bread in house. In all honesty, we can't really say we tasted this difference in regards to the bread or meat. We tried the XL "Pio-Pio" and the 2XL "Muuu" with corn, fries and posteles as sides. Our horchata was also slightly watered down. Everything was good, albeit not amazing and for the price you pay here, you expect amazing. Rating 3/5 Overall, the experience we were hoping for with 3XL was a tad disappointing. We found it to be pricey for average quality. If you're into one-time "I went there" splurges, then you'll enjoy what 3XL has to offer, however, if you're craving a juicy burger on a budget, this place may not be what you're looking for. read more

Wow... a gourmet burger shop in Playa? That's awesome! This is a beautiful little owner-run shop that serves made-to-order patties at a very reasonable price just a short walk from the beach. It's really close to Walmart, so after a stroll through the big superstore, stopping for a burger will help rid you of the homesickness you may be experiencing halfway through your trip. There are so many choices for food - chicken, beef, pork burgers, and 2 types of veggie burgers (bean and quinoa) that it will match the appetite for anyone. The signature 3XL stamp on the burger bun is pretty awesome too. As for toppings, the bacon option included a number of strips covered with cheese. For toppings, there are a ton of gourmet toppings, everything from the the standard lettuce and tomatoes and red onions... to cucumber, sprouts, and multiple types of sauces. Fries were really crispy and excellent flavour. If you like the tastes of the crispy fries that I usually have to fight my wife for... even the large ones had that same satisfying crunch. My wife had the chocolate milkshake which tasted great... from what she let me have ;) Overall, a wonderful enclosed restaurant for a great respite from the busy atmosphere of Playa Del Carmen. read more

I happened upon 3XL Comida Grande while on the search for a restaurant that served burgers in the area. This establishment was especially appealing to me because it offers two different types of vegetarian patties; bean, and the other quinoa. Meats include beef, pork, chicken, and fish. There are also three different sizes you can choose from (1XL, 2XL, and 3XL). Once the burger and side is prepared (the latter being the choice of french fries, sweet potato fries, or a small corn on the cob), you can dress your burger at the condiment bar... If I remember correctly, they have about 9 different sauces (e.g. chipotle mayo, blue cheese, etc.), and all the common burger/sandwich fixings (lettuce, pickles, etc.). Everything looked very fresh. My burger, with a bean patty, was fantastic. The rest of the members of my family had beef burgers, and devoured them. In addition to the excellent food, the staff seemed so genuinely kind and were so accommodating to us! I don't remember when was the last time I enjoyed having a burger so much. I just loved this place, 100% recommended. The ambiance, music & decoration are great (they even have a playground for kids) and the food is amazing! We came to Playa del Carmen for a week and this was our last night and decided to go for a burger, some friends recommended us 3XL and they weren't wrong. I'm a healthy food lover but the rest of my family are not and I would never imagine we were going to have such an incredible burger experience at Playa. My husband and sons had a 3xl beef burger with fries (they loved them) and a had a pork burger with corn and instead of bread I chose lettuce, which is not only tasteful but sooooo healthy and you can add as many veggies and sauces as you want, I highly recommend the garlic and cilantro sauce, the are amazing. We ended up talking with the owner Cheo who is such a nice guy and he's always there taking care off his business. 3xl in my opinion must be a must when you come to Playa del Carmen, definitely coming back! read more

Before I start raving about what a fabulous burger these folks make, and how perfect the fries are, let me say I had been walking around town for about four hours and was ravenous, exhausted, and probably inches away from a heat stroke when I walked into this place. But, that said, man, what a great, great hamburger they make here. It may be the best burger, besides a few home barbecues, that I have ever eaten. And I am including In n Out, Hodad's in Ocean Beach and Rocky's in Pacific Beach. All great burger places, and 3XL is right up there with my favorites. They have what looks like a salad bar but is really the largest selection of condiments I have ever seen at a burger joint. And the Fries....wow, the Fries are outstanding. So, what more can I say. This place was crazy good, and the service was outstanding. There was 1 of the cooks who spoke English and took over for the cashier, and helped us all tremendously. The food is fresh, the meat is cooked right in front of you, and you build the burger from their condiment bar. Fries were hot & fresh, and the drinks & refills came from their servers who waited around the table and were more than happy to help. This was a great find and the food was top-notch. I love Mexican food, but sometimes you just need a burger! While it looks newer and glossier than my favourite open air kitchens in Playa, this owner operated burger joint is awesome. My 3XL beef burger was massive and perfectly grilled then served on a fresh, delicious bun. No worries about condiments as the restaurant sports 20+ toppings, sauces and salsas for DIY application. The garlic and chipotle sauces were fresh and bright. Sides of grilled corn, fries and sweet potato fries were very good. The restaurant also serves ground chicken and pork as well as ribs. All three burger types were delicious. The place was busy and spotlessly clean. The owner, Cheo, clearly enjoys his work as he chatted with customers and made everyone feel welcome. Across from the Walmart, the location is a bit off the beaten path of 5th but really just minutes away by foot. Well worth the trip for this completely satisfying and satiating meal. read more

The other day I seen this place was packed with "locals". So I had to try it. We ordered the xl size burger fries and corn. They don't have butter for the corn. I ordered my burger well done. It was still pink. I almost did t way it and was going to complain. If you remembered I ordered fries. I did t get them till about 15 min later. Either the waiter forgot to order them or they don't serve them with your meal.. they were good but would rather have them with my meal. When I ordered my burger well done that means NO PINK. My family and I have visited them 3 times, the first time was outstanding (minus the heavyset cashier lady with curly hair, she's always rude and has no personality). We really loved the food that first time, the second time was just decent. I'm writing this review because the last time was just horrible, this past Sunday. They are supposed to open at 1 PM, so we got there at 12:45 and waited outside, we can see that there is no one but the cleaning lady sweeping floors and cleaning the doors/windows. At 12:58 the cashier and her (I assume) son show up, then a minute or so later the cook... so you would think that they would be ready to open the door and serve guests when they open right? WRONG. We were let in right at 1PM but everything was still being prepped. After waiting nearly 40 minutes for our food, it was a total disappointment. The burgers were medium rare, which we ordered medium. The fries were soggy (maybe cold oil??) and the horchata water tested like it was starting to ferment. The veggies that were on the bar were old, the buns were not toasted. we were really hungry and not wanting to make a scene, we just didn't say a thing, but we ended up going to eat tacos around the corner instead. There was another man that showed up before we left, he seemed like he might have been the owner or manager, but neither he nor anyone else ever came to our table to ask how everything was. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path which may be a good thing. Very modern and immaculate. The burgers look and taste fantastic and the bun is delicious. Try the sauces, they're very good.
