It's not a huge place, and most of their space extends the long way back through the building, leaving the actual storefront you see on the street rather narrow and small. When you walk inside, you see the super cool, urban loft style to the studio - one large room with gleaming hardwood floor, exposed brick wall, and Detroit artwork hung about. They offer group classes and personal training sessions only, so this is not your standard "drop in and work out on your own" gym. The schedule has regular spin, zumba, pilates, and yoga classes, and personal training sessions can be scheduled by appointment. Classes are reasonably priced, you must schedule and reserve ahead (no drop ins) because the place is small and they don't want to overbook. But, the scheduling system is online, very simple, and allows you to add in or cancel nearly right up until the class start time. Every class I've gone to was a hit - energetic and helpful instructors and good music! The clientele tends to be lots of young professionals who live nearby in Corktown, Midtown, downtown, etc. and everyone is very friendly. All levels of fitness welcome. I only wish True Body would add a few more varieties of classes to their schedule (kickboxing, please!!!) and maybe some more Saturday day times, so I could go more often. Located in a rather sparse looking part of town, there's ample street parking. They offer a TRUE AND FREE WEEK OF CLASSES. You know the drill with these gyms, they offer you a free week pass but you have to go in person, get the spiel from one of their sales reps, fill out tons of crap, and get hounded with ads and phone calls for the rest of your life until you join - not so here. Go online and sign up with their class scheduler, and if you've ever taken any class at one of these boutique gyms then you're already familiar with the Mind Body Connect platform. Add the "one week free" item to your cart and sign up for classes. DONE. I walked in that same day for a 90min spin class. No calls or questions when I stopped going. Some might prefer more attention, which I get, but I was thrilled with their hands off approach. Totally friendly, worth checking out. For you spinners out there, they have a series of classes that work towards riding a full century. I'm definitely going to check that out when it comes around again.

The trainer was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He demonstrated all movements in a way that was easy to understand and he was patient with members when they had questions. All the members were warm and welcoming. The structure of the class was clever. We did some interval warm-ups, which had twenty-five seconds of work and twenty seconds of rest. The movements included mountain climbers, bird dogs, plank holds, push-ups, and other movements. Then we did five pull-ups and ten tricep over the head extensions. Then we did some mobility work-things like lunges, cossack squats, hip rotations, and arm rotations. After that, we did bench presses with a pause at the bottom and single-arm dumbbell bent-over rows. Then we did hip thrusters and farmer carry's and we finished the workout with some barbell bicep curls, some high band side steps and some sled pushes. My muscles were definitely feeling the burn at an increasing rate as the class went on. If I had to nitpick then I would say that there wasn't enough time to complete all of the movements and the gym is small. I imagine the gym would feel crowded if there were more than five people attending a class. When we got to "event #3," which included the barbell bicep curls, high band side steps, and sled pushes, we were given only seven minutes to complete it. Because it's important to stretch at the end of a workout, I respected the time cap on this section. But, I think there should have been a time cap on all three events. That would have prevented us from feeling rushed at the end. Go check this place out! I would like to come back and try one of their kettlebell classes.

Initial impressions just trying to find the place and walking in were not what I was expecting. If you are used to walking into a Lifetime Fitness with tons of equipment, throw that idea away. Michigan Kettlebells is tucked into a small commercial and storage complex. Once you walk in, you will see this is a large renovated garage and sets the mood for the workouts to come. You will learn to love it. There is a wide variety of people who attend. Classes generally have 10-15 people in them and have a 60/40 mix of men to women. Age ranges from ~16 - 60 years old across many different skill levels from beginners to marathon runners. Everyone is very supportive and a great crowd to workout with. The workouts are different every single day I have attended, but maintain the core principal to increase general strength and fitness. This is done through Kettlebell training in additional to raw,"backyard" type of workouts such as tractor tire flipping, sand bag lifting, push ups, pull ups and everything in between. Craig, the primary instructor, is very knowledgeable and an overall great guy. His wife, Dawn, holds female only boot camp classes on Sunday which my wife attends. She is loving those as well. A third trainer Derek, is another great asset to the gym. All I can say is do yourself a favor and check this out, I am happy I did.

It's super helpful to have someone to motivate me and help me understand how to do certain exercises in the right way. The slightest adjustment in posture makes a massive difference in outcomes. I had no clue. The space is super clean and spacious. I feel great walking out of there every single time. I highly recommend this spot.

What amazes me is the level of physical functionality that I have, primarily due to the work that I do at GIVE Fitness. This is not a one-size-fits-all operation. Pierre continues to design programs that align to my physical limitations and current goals. For instance, I have said, "give me the Linda Hamilton arms from Terminator 2" and Pierre will say "are you sure?" and then he designs a program and then, within a few months, I'll be gratuitously poking at things in the distance, just so I can hear "dang, your arms are tone!". Lol, j/k, kind of. Anyway, the point is, unique programs. And now, having been there so long, I have seen the work he has done on other clients. The prices are fair. Studio is clean. I get measurements monthly to help track my progress. You can buy cold water and Gatorade for $1. Really easy location for downtown Detroit. When I first looked for a Detroit trainer, I also check out true body fitness, but wasn't as impressed with the free first assessment. Pierre really got my goals and assessed my baseline fitness level so he was ready with a full work out plan for my first paid session. BAM! Hit the ground running!

Went to check out this unique gym for the first time with my husband today…read more Emily and Ryan greeted us warmly with a smile. Felt at home straight away. Ryan explained that we would be tracked with a heart monitor throughout our workout, had us fill out intake forms, then provided us further info on what the circuit interval training would be about for us today. How we would spend 3 minutes at each station, 2 workouts at stations 3-9 and the whole workout would be about 30 minutes with 30 second breaks between stations. The goals was to reach a maximum heart rate that is comfortable for each of us. I did well with the walking and jogging but once we hit the more intense leg workouts that kicked my butt this first time. Emily was my main trainer and Ryan worked mostly with my husband. This is very specialized training services and meal prep and plan. The trainers are skilled and all have great personalities and are truly there to help and maximize the members experience. It's nice that there's no scheduled training session and you can come and go as you please, but still know a trainer will be keeping you on task to meet your health and body goals. I pushed myself too hard with the leg exercises and thought I would be sick and collapse, took a break and Emily was patient with me and gave me breaks when needed. She gave me some alternate workouts to keep my heart rate up but not as intense for the last 2 workouts. Emily explained the importance of dynamic stretching at the beginning of the workout to warm up the muscles and body and then to do static stretches at the end of the workout. It was a really good, intense and fun exercise and nicer to have a trainer/cheer leader in your corner. We both signed up today. Monthly plan is $69.99, no risk since it's month to month and $70 for the heart monitor. Your heart monitor checks you in as it's attached to your name and account and they have monitors that show your heart rate during your circuit interval workout. You can also add an app and use the same monitor when you are not in the gym too. Now I have to workout more to get through the intense mountain climb and squat, squat jumps and lunge exercises.
