Stumbled upon this stand on our way to Kona. Ordered 3 chicken plates, one two choice combo (chicken and laulau), and a side order of smoked meat. Portions are huge so come hungry and/or share. My Ohana and I finally checked out 3 Mountain BBQ after passing by many times as Waimea residents. I mentioned to a good friend that we were going GJ's for lunch and he told us, try 3 Mountain instead. Boy, am I glad we did. We ordered Huli Huli Chicken plate, Lau Lau plate and shared amongst the 3 of us. The Huli Huli chicken was definitely more moist than GJ's and a better smoky, sweet flavor developed by the Ono dry rub and long time on the spit. The breast meat, which sometimes dries out with huli huli, was incredibly moist. The best I've ever had. Lau Lau was pretty standard but altogether tasty and hit the spot. I did want to mention the sides too- in case anyone is wondering the rice was perfectly cooked (I hate undercooked rice) and the cole slaw very tasty (it has raisins and I think apples) and a welcome change up versus the typical Mac Salad. From a cost standpoint- $27 Total (15 for Huli chicken plate/$12 for Lau Lau plate) fed all 3 of us with leftovers. Service was warm and local style. I'm stoked that Waimea has two really great Huli Huli Chicken options with 3 Mountain and GJ's. GJ's if you like the Filipino flare and 3 Mountain for more local plates and style (Smoke meat, Lau Lau etc.) Either way, no can lose. 3 Mountain will be a new Saturday tradition! These guys offer THE BEST Huli Chicken! It's so good that you really have to find them in order to try it yourself. They give such friendly service and are super happy to help you understand flavors but also any island questions you may have! If I were to explain the atmosphere. Imagine a farmers market but super small. It's super chill and never super crowded because right next to them is usually a small vendors market that sell flowers, honey, art, and sometimes some other food vendors. read more
