You need someone to tell you about it and that's why I've been debating writing this review. I'm not sure I want any more people to know about this local favourite. It's hard enough to get a table as it is but share I will, I believe in Karma. The Italian influenced menu changes weekly and is told to you by your waiter when you're seated. It's such a subtle but important element to what I love about this place. It requires that you're paying attention - that you're in your environment and not lost in the text of a menu. It makes you sit down and share an experience with your fellow diner. Very small thing but it really sets the evening up. The dining room is pretty small and the tables compete for space but the acoustics and feel of this place really work. Buzzy yet intimate. I've been for several meals here and the food is consistently spectacular. The restaurant is BYO but it's a Fine Dining experience, so it makes this place very appealing on the pocket. Now go and tell them I sent you. I might even get a table myself if you do!

Our table was in a little spot near the kitchen, somewhat cramped but serviceable. The menu is explained by the waiter, and provided on a card, with no prices attached. Sounds great, and we take due time to decide. Lovely bread and oil provided to nibble on, and in due course we are ready to order. And eventually a staff member noticed. Unfortunately between the time we get a menu and the slightly longer than we would have liked time when the staff decided to take our order half of the things we wanted were no longer available. This really irritates me, as there is no excuse for such a shortfall of produce. Nevertheless, we manage to find suitable substitutes and get our food under way. Our antipasti platter was pretty ordinary - I wouldn't bother ordering this as there was nothing particularly memorable on the platter. Although, to be fair, there was nothing particularly memorable about the whole meal. The stuffed zucchini flowers entree was probably the pick of the night. A veal cutlet came out looking like a rib-eye on the bone and was not cooked as requested. The duck was ordinary, and in general we were quite disappointed. In my opinion the preparation time for the meal was excessive - we waited a bloody long time for service. As if this wasn't bad enough the staff seemed determined to ignore us and never offered us a desert menu or even coffee, although all the tables around us seemed to manage both. We may give it another try, but I struggle to see why I would. Better to be had in the area, IMHO.

I needn't have, as it turns out. De Vita, right in the heart of Manly, delivered wood-fired Napoli-style pizza that delivered on all counts. There was a wide choice but I settled on the Contadina: pancetta, wood-fire-roasted potatoes, and fior di latte cheese. Very thin and flavourful. My wife had the Regina (cherry tomatoes, fior di latte cheese, prosciutto, rocket, Parmesan, olive oil, basil) and proclaimed it delicious. The calamari starter we shared was large but lightly battered, with fresh, tender squid chunks. The wine list looked good, but we brought our own as they're also BYO. The atmosphere and surroundings are OK; It's quite open to the street (at least during warmer weather) which is good if you like buzzy going-on, not so much if you want quiet romance. Service was quick, friendly, and happy to make recommendations. Pizza fix: acquired.

Cafes serving glorified couscous salads at four times its market value are at 80% occupancy. Lukewarm, bitter coffee gets top rated and queues round the block. And somehow, I come to De Vita at lunchtime on a weekday and we are the only customers bar another table. This restaurant is fantastic. When the lunch special - all pizze at $15 - is on, it is even more fantastic. This is proper Neapolitan pizza, made to order, with ingredients that aren't bottom shelf Coles. I mean, there is not much else to say - if you know what Neapolitan pizza is, you will know, if you don't, I can't describe it in a way that would bring it across. It bears little resemblance to Domino's. At $15, on the overpriced Sydney market, you are almost robbing them. To be a fair reviewer, I have to add that the spaghetti gamberi were pretty average. Lacking in taste and salt, not the best prawns, small-ish portion. This is most definitely a pizzeria and that's what you should order (and an espresso afterwards). The service is Italian, that means efficient and a little direct, and the smile will be a little dry. This does not mean they do not like you. It's just how things are in Italy and the guys haven't quite adjusted to the matey Australian ways. Perhaps it is that it is on a side street, not on the Corso. Perhaps they need to hang a fixie upside down at the back and buy some tables made of century old wreckage wood fished out by divers wearing copper diving bells ironically. Perhaps what Australians (and the tourists and WHV expats that, to be honest, form 90% of Manly residents) want when they order a pizza is thick undercooked dough covered in low quality fat and protein, and they are surprised not to get that. Perhaps nobody reads TripAdvisor anymore (where they are in the top 10 restaurants for Manly, which is how I found them). I don't know. I don't care. Just go.

We came at 8pm on a Sunday evening and it was packed so we put our name down and came back later. There are 16 options for pasta "sauces" that include a variety of meat, vegetables, herbs, etc. Then you choose from home-made pastas: gnocchi, fettuccine, spinach/ricotta ravioli, veal ravioli, penne or spaghetti. Per our friends suggestion we went with the fettucine pasta with the Bassano sauce (italian sausage, exotic mushrooms, porcini, fresh basil and sage, Napoli, dash of cream). It was AMAZING! The home-made noodles were cooked to perfection and the sauce was absolutely delicoius. It was $25 for the secondo (main) size which I think is reasonable. We also ordered the Parmagiana Catania (eggplant parmesan) that comes with bread and a side salad. It wasn't anything unique but the portion size was huge and the side salad helped balance out the heavy cheesy dish. Oh yeah, the garlic bread we ordered as a starter was awesome. With 2 mains, garlic bread and 1 glass of wine the bill came to $66 for two people. Not bad! We'll be back to eat our way through the rest of their menu!
