Home of the Neuköllner Bahnhof Homeless
After asking for an alternative to our room that a 60 year old man with only one outfit (yes, my view throughout the night as I was kept up by his contented, but unbelievably loud snoring, was his butt-crack, which fit neither in his underwear nor under the cover) moved into the room in the middle of the night, my 20 year old sister and I were moved to the dorm offered to us as the only, but terrible smelling alternative that we didn't have to pay for. On my sisters way out of the old room a different 50 something year old man asked her if she lived there and then told her that he did indeed live there, but only for the night. We moved next door only to discover that the source of the terrible smell the hostel has been trying to rid the room of for weeks, was the shoes of a man who possessed one outfit, a small empty-ish backpack, and a beer and one extra pair of shoes in a plastic bag.
I have slept in hostel rooms with men before, but they were always under the age of 30, actually traveling and the situations were never uncomfortable.
If this hostel wants to house those in need of housing through the cold of the winter, they should really keep a separate room for men over 40 in possession of only a tiny backpack.
Since this hasn't yet dawned upon them, 2A hostel remains the halfway hostel a gem for Berliners who are homeless, and an unpleasant experience in a characterless, sterile atmosphere. 2A should not be advertised as a hostel.
Though the staff here is very friendly, they aren't very helpful or flexible in what has been a very uncomfortable situation.
The clean facilities and the hottest hostel showers in Germany also don't make up for the remainder of the experience.
Go to Plus, Wombat or Saint Christophs for international young people, good company, new acquaintances, and fun i.e. the experience the word hostel suggests.
