The onion rings and fries were perfect,,,crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I got the turkey melt on rye and my friend got the patty melt and we both were happy with the food.

The low-down on this local: * It feels more like the first two. There is seating, but you're seated in a convenience store with gas pumps, kind of like the exits out in the New Mexico desert or Texas prairie that have a single store. Then again, I had amazing Indian food in the New Mexico desert, which is why I didn't count out Big D's. * It's hard to tell what goes on in the kitchen. I heard the beep at one point that suggests some food is microwaved. But I also heard a deep fryer going at another point. My friend got chicken fingers and I got "fat boy sausage" (sausage meat wrapped around cream cheese and jalapeno), so I can't really say how much Big D's is actually BBQ, but we both liked our foods. * Portion size was small for my sandwich, but my friend got a lot of chicken. Neither of our dishes had anything on them - his came with fries, my sausages came on bread with some BBQ sauce, and that was it. But they were tasty. But I would say the bread was rather low-quality. Not that they make in-house bread at this gas station. * Friendly, if a bit quiet, service. I got mine as a meal and the guy behind the counter said I took a large. I thought he meant I took the wrong bag off the display and I had to pay more. No, he meant I took too small of a cup of tea and he handed me a larger cup. Initially I was thinking 3 stars, but the sausage just refused to leave my mind. So I came back and got a sausage and a salad to go (needed some veggies in my diet). Good size salad, cheese sprinkled on top, even though they were quiet and didn't ask about dressing (fortunately I overhead and changed from ranch, but they didn't give me the vinagrette I ended up settling on). And I think they were very generous with the sausage they gave me for my 1/2 pound order. Do I recommend it to others? Definite maybe. Especially if you want the fat boy sausage.

Honestly, that smell alone had us excited to eat. The setup here is casual and easy. You order at the counter, grab a table, and they give you a number, though a lot of the food was ready so quickly that several items were handed to us almost immediately after ordering. Our group shared all kinds of things so we got to try a little bit of everything. My daughter and I split a loaded baked potato topped with pulled pork and added several sides to the table because honestly...we wanted to try it all. The fried okra was especially delicious, but truly everything we had was good. Around the table: * My dad ordered the nachos * My mom got a sweet potato along with brisket-stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon (which she absolutely loved) * We sampled sides galore and nobody left hungry The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, staff was friendly, the restaurant was clean, and service was FAST without making the experience feel rushed. This felt like exactly what good Southern BBQ should be -- flavorful, generous portions, no unnecessary fuss, and the kind of meal that makes everyone at the table happy after a long day out exploring.

There is ample…read moreparking outside, the building looks new and attractive with a wall of cut logs to the left of the entrance. The smoke aroma hits you before you open the door which is nearly always a good sign. Both of us decided on their Special Op's sandwich, which comes with a Brisket, Pulled Pork, a choice of sausage (jalapeño pineapple or four cheese), a rib and a side of beans. We each ordered a side of potato salad and we split an order of Brisket Twisters which are jalapeños stuffed with brisket and cream cheese and wrapped in bacon. Neither of us finished and both of us had to get a to-go box. Overall everything was really good. Everything was fresh, the hot foods were hot, not warm or dried out, from sitting around in a warming cabinet, for hours, and the potato salad was well chilled, not room temperature. It is things like this that I notice, and make a difference. The only thing I was not keen on was the rib. It was extremely soft almost mushy and literally falling of the bone. I know thats how many people like their ribs. I just prefer my ribs to be a little less well done and have a bit of a pull to the meat to get it off the bone, so I am not going to ding them for that. The counter where you order and get your meal is clean, bright and cheerful, the staff are all really pleasant, friendly and helpful. The dining room is fairly large and roomy, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy your food. Overall, a really good dining experience and we both agreed we would dine there again.

Secondly we had to wait a few to be seated on a Friday evening. That's a good sign. We were sat within 5-10 mins. Our server (Brie) I believe was amazing. We asked her for suggestions. She was not shy and suggested the pork chops and Fish. Boy was she right! I got the catfish. I am not a huge catfish fan unless it is done right and CLEAN. Theirs is exactly that! Well seasoned and amazing! The hush puppies were hand made not frozen and were the best from a restaurant that I have had. I also. Had the baked potato, potato salad. Again easily the best I have ever had. Back to the battered and fried pork chops, unless you are able to eat enough for a family of 4 or the 1/2 portion. They were simply seasoned in a way that any chef should be proud of!! We took 3/4 home and airfares them the next day. He had the green beans with the chops and Lordy they could potentially make you slap your momma. Here's the thing. We eat out a lot and I do write a lot of reviews but this hands down was one the top 5 experiences in the last 3-4 years. This meal with drinks was only $38 before a nice cash tip on the table. I will be back again and again! I hope more people find this special place so close to Lake DeGray
